  1. the Lad who won is Jamie Howdel from Pilsley Chesterfield, he dances well and loves Northern Soul, dad has been a dj on and of over the years. hes about 21 I think.
  2. one early northern tune that made the American charts was 'Thats the Tune' by the Vogues, but there must lots of others?
  3. I was just thinking, I wonder how many of our beloved tunes be it rare, semi known etc actually made the charts, either here or in the states, anybody know?
  4. bazza your a top man, and i like your little dancing man, is it a video of you?
  5. Whats worse a new girl on the block playing boots or a well known dj getting spots sos he can play his digitised/remastered/discoed up records. at least the boot sounds like the real thing.
  6. Born and bred in Notts now living on the Notts/Derby border regular visitor to most gigs in the area especially Annesley, go to Soul Nights every weekend, sometimes Friday & Saturday, have never heard this tune on our side of the county, like it though.
  7. should have been there but got engaged on that day to sharon, (still married) celebrated our engagement at the Manchester Unity Club Beeston Notts instead. oh I suddenly feel very old I was 23 Sharon was 18. great memories, what would you give to be there again, those Cleethorpes tapes brought it all flooding back.
  8. Went to most early 70s northern clubs including VaVas, didn't give a hoot who was playing the choones as long has they played them and still don't. don't go to a gig just because a NAME is on. like golf you are only has good has your last shot. have heard so called top djs play crap sets and then the next time great sets. Don't like the loud mouthed, "come on lets feckin have you" brigade or those who loose themselves in the , "I paid this much for this tune" Just play the records have the decency to turn up well in advance of your spot and stay a while after other than that if i was pushed i would say, John Poole Torchboy Mr Nige Brown Glynn Sissons.
  9. Talk about taking you back in time..Can it really be 33 years ago when I was stood on a freezing February night (EE by gum thats when Februarys were really freezing!) just around my 17th birthday, shaking in a cotton dress queueing to get in! Absolutely brilliant!! Thanks very much for the memories.
  10. The Annesley, Bentinck, Pilsley joint venture was absolutely spot on: Just the right atmosphere for a NYE bash! we have been to many NYE soul do`s over the years and to be quite honest have been bored senseless by the music, the curled up, bacteria fest that was advertised as a `buffet` , the cheap box of standard fireworks that were the `display`etc etc but last night was the best yet for us.
  11. Sleepless nights I lie awake, thinking how my heart is breakin. backed with a thumping bass, George Blackwell brilliant.
  12. can anybody help with a copy of the broadways, 'just don't know'. chris
  13. Don`t think he posted the pictures. Would like to see some though if anyone has any.
  14. Chris tried this a while back...Also to no avail!! He did pay a bloke on E bay in the USA for it but it never arrived.. Love the tune.
  15. Thats good then as I wouldn`t have thought it would have been meant in any other way. Don`t know either of you really...Only through reading the honest and respectful East Anglian posts! Anyway I truly hope that the original poster does get himself sorted locally...One of my sons went to Sheffield Hallam Uni and he said they had some Northern nights put on by the students union (He didn`t go to any though!)
  16. This reads as an honest and respectful post. Have you PM`d the poster with the persons contact details?
  17. Really interesting this because this morning when I was updating my Blog I had typed in the word `disco` as the local venue where I received my induction(!) into northern/soul but I took the word out as I didn`t want to give the `wrong` impression. What a sad conformist I feel that has revealed me to be. Perhaps I do care more about what impression I give others than I realised. I realise that the word `disco` has many conotations and that this thread (Even though I own up to not reading each post) will inevitably dwell on the`disco` style of music but my experience just shows how sensitive we can be to have even owned up to attending one, even though surely, it was meant as a generic term in the good old days??
  18. Sorry chuck
  19. Unsure about this as theres no current soul nights on in Chesterfield.
  20. Spot on rant lad
  21. Sorry Baz, I go too far back!! I missed those classics
