Hang on a minute!: I`m missing out on something here! Wot ; No spondoolers!!

Yep: regularly there every third Saturday at Pilsley. 99.99% of the time people are pleasant and raring to go! I sit inside the main room so don`t miss out on too much; just occasionally though it can be frustrating when theres something played that I`d love to dance to but can`t as theres a crowd of people waiting to pay! The bus that left Ilkeston Co op for Cleethorpes was stopped on a couple of occasions. Details of which are hazy to me lately!! S

Happy Birthday to all celebrating their birthday today Especially Bridget (Sharon) my Misssus & eamsey both 50. When they were born there was no Family car, television, phones,(wealthy people only) mobile phones, Ipods, cd players, tape recorders dvd players, no computers, no fridges, washing machines, dish washers (Again perhaps only by the wealthiest), most houses didn't have a shower or bath and in sharons case did'nt even have an inside toilet. No Tescos,Morrisons, Asdas, no holidays abroad, East coast was the place to go and no cheap flights. people had carbuncles, boils and bee stings were treated with Blue Bags and Poultices were often slapped onto bruises & sprains. No Chinese take aways, no Kebabs, Mcdonalds, Frankie & Bennies or retail parks with Currys, Pc world and Pets at home stores on them, No Ikea, no Sky and football was confined to Saturday afternoons at 3.00 pm Schools had witches for head teachers, you got caned and have visits from the dick nurse and you had a medical every year (cough please) You went to the pub for your pint, bingo or a working mens club, miners welfare for entertainment or the occasional visit to the city for the 'pictures' but there were Flicks on just about every corner oh yeah and trains were Steam driven (in the main). No northern soul!!

I was 11/12 in 1970 and used to go across the road from where I lived to Cinderhill church hall where there was a youth club and disco. Remember dancing to `Stoned Love` (Had a tweed `midi skirt` which I thought looked the bees knees) went to various local school disco`s at Padstow (Bestwood) and William Crane (Strelley) where there were some lads who danced `northern`: Progressed on to Basford Hall Miners Welfare (Creepers) where Rob Smith DJ`d and got to know him, his brother and his mates Phil Jones and Ian Walker (Can remember Reparata and the Delrons `Panic` being played and Phil spinning so fast his watched flew off and across the dance hall) Ian had an old Bedford van painted purple with various slogans daubed on it ( )and he asked if we wanted to go up to Wigan with him one Saturday (That would have been summer 74) we went and then went to some soul do`s he DJ`d at at The Carlton Hotel (Again Summer 74) Went our own way then (Me and my mate Janet) to the Brit, up to Cleethorpes, Wigan etc and used to cadge lifts with a lad called Gary who was the mate of Chris Cooper (who is Mr Bridget).....The rest is history or so they say. It was the Bali Hai, downstairs at the Palais with the revolving dancefloor. I remember being there and Rob Smith was in the place but don`t think he was Djing. (Memory fading fast!) There was also the Intercon (Vic centre) on a Tuesday which I remember going to after Creepers (Basford Hall M W). Colmans (Off Clumber street) on a Thursday I reckon also. Went to them all (1974/5) but details are a bit sketchy now! Sharon

No, I wasn't refering to any N/s Djs or venues. thread started with the recognition by the BBC of the Torch. My comment was about BBC djs and Payola, as its called, spinning such dross when they could have been instrumental in promoting such Artists has J.J. Barnes and the likes. Perhaps then they wouldn't have ended up has car park attendants, grave diggers and dying without as much as a head stone to mark their passing. chris

Nice to see despite the dates, but mores the pity that the artists didn't recieve recognition when we were dancing to the music. to busy letting dogey djs promote nice pop tunes for dogey record companies. chris

I can see what you mean but what would be the answer then to so many playing the same sounds month in month out from the same era? The reality is also that there would seem to me to be a large percentage of people who now attend these soul nights who actually have no history on the scene and so are being drip fed the music that that particular promoter (who may also perhaps have limited history) feels encapsulates`northern`. I have nothing against new blood (But I think my thoughts on that would be left to another thread; As locally I don`t see a great `deal of evidence in the paying public of that) and think that if events are being set up that conflict with another established night then better surely if the new one gives the choice of a different genre of soul, from another era, something different is what I`m saying really. There is nothing wrong with choice, its healthy and I`m all for that its just that if I went around some venues running on the same night blindfolded I wouldn`t be able to tell which one I was in from the music played. Diversity to me should be the name of the game not a confrontational mentality to start a night on any given night that may clash with another but avoids their mates night is not to me what is about. Offering people change and entertainment with a good atmosphere is paramount but thinning the crowds down to a few scattered widely doesn`t lend itself to a good atmosphere and I`ve been to many of these throughout the years and also seen some on the photo gallery on this site. Thanks for the best wishes but this was just a general question due to the recent comments about distance and the apparent `treading on toes` of other promoters. I know this has gone on for years and as I said in the original post will continue to do so I am sure. In the Notts/Derbys/ South Yorkshire area there are plenty of nights that address the full gamut of differences that would appeal to most tastes I would think; albeit there may not be something on any given night that appeals to all what I can`t see personally is how an addition of one more do on a night that is very similar in genre to one already in existence on the same night improves the scene as a whole but each to their own as they say. The thing is I suppose potential promoters want to `give it a go` so good luck to them as they must see a gap in the market that they think they will address by their own brand of soul night.

Just was wondering: What is the acceptable radius within which it is permissible to start up another soul night when an established one is already up and running? I can appreciate differences in genre/style/type of music played but even so what is the unwritten law? When is it ok to tread on someones toes without that someone taking offence? Nothing to be done to stop it I know, its always happened and always will as its a `free country` (or so is said) Any thoughts on the matter? Sharon
