As most of the 45s up for auction on there appear battered from the descriptions that's no loss. I used to trawl US eBay regularly but now only occasionally. If there's anything nice in good condition [VG++ to M-] on there it usually goes for more than I think it's worth, as do poor condition collectible 45s too which I wouldn't go near anyway. And most of the listings are just not worth putting UK eBay is even worse. The odd realistic seller with decent 45s.

From the description the condition doesn't sound great. Nearly £500 for "OK for dj-ing"

I lived there, Rick, from Sept '72 to March '73. Tons of 45s lying around then but mostly UK. There was a shop called Moondogs that had a lot of US 45s. I think the guys there were more into rockabilly/rock'n'roll and I assume they actively bought loads from the US which included soul stuff they weren't interested in as just part of the deal. Obviously there may have been other similar places in London I never stumbled upon. NRS in Manchester and Blackpool had loads of US 45s back then albeit mainly Chess and Philips and the odd Blue Rock 45 like Keanya Collins. And there was the Record Bar [?] on Tibb St with the monkey in the cage if I remember correctly. They had some oddball imports for sale but what I didn't know then was that they had a lot more in a "warehouse" in Ashton. Sometime in 70's [Carolines in Manchester ran a Northern night at the time -'75 maybe ?] myself, Withers and McCadden got in there. Owner said they'd had 'em, years. Multiple copies of Lenny Curtis and I recall pulling out Velvet Satins. Then there was Bostocks with the Verve and MGM 45s, and of course Global. Makes you wonder how these places got hold of these 45s and why really. It wasn't as if they were responding to Northern demand but more that we fed off those places to find records as the scene developed.

I guess I may have misremembered his name or might be a different place entirely ? "Paul" was a soul but not Northern fan. In my defence I'm not losing it but sometimes I don't remember at all some instances back in the day that mates do, like Scal on here who gets quite annoyed with me when I don't remember. Souljer6 on here and myself found a lot of UK demos in Croydon sometime during that period I lived in London. Our recollections of that day vary.

To be honest Richard it was 50 years ago so details are now hazy although I can remember some of the 45s I found in that newsagent. I'm pretty sure the guy in the record shop was called Paul but then he would have been around his early 20's then and I figured he just worked there. Plumpish, tallish, fair hair ? Lou Johnson on London was still on the shelf. It was a popular tune up North then at the Pendulem club in Manchester. I remember the tube station was rather pokey and old. A very small lift with metal grill. The ad mentions Finsbury and that also rings a small bell. At the weekend I usually just got the tube to somewhere and walked miles looking for shops and junk/second-hand places, always coming back with good stuff, though one time I was reading on the Tube and got off leaving around 10 45s I'd bought. Lou Johnson and Helena Ferguson UK demos were amongst them.

Sutty beat me to it but "Ooh Child" was around in many shops around the Manchester area and sold well, albeit 200,000 seems a lot. I'd imagine it was featured in B&S at the time so soul fans were aware of it. I take your point it was not in every shop especially those that stuck to the charts. I lived in London from sept '72 to March '73 and like you Portabello Rd was a great place to find UK Northern for peanuts. In fact you couldn't help not find 45s down there. They were everywhere. I once got off the Tube to go to a record shop in Bethnal Green [run by Paul I think] that had been recommended to me by a guy I met at Terry Davis's Wheatsheaf pub night and called in a newsagent for some fags and there was a box of UK demos on the counter for 20p and more in the back. My take on the amount of stuff lying around down there was that the record companies were down there so unsold stock or promotion guys dumping unused/surplus copies rather than a mod sell-off. Everything I bought looked minty or unplayed.

I think looking back I was having a senior moment. I did buy that test press re-issue but no idea what colour it is now.

Dave never mentioned that to me. I found a copy in a shop in Asheville N.C. sometime in late 80's or early 90's which I sold to Richard Searling for £8. Sounded like something he could play at Parkers. Me and Alex Jones went back to Asheville shop maybe mid 90's as there were a lot of albums in there and we figured we may get a deal for buying a lot [which we did], 45s on show hadn't really changed but as we were pulling out albums I leaned against what I thought was a wall and fell into a room full of 60's promos. $3 each and tons of good stuff.

It was £330 in swaps I seem to remember. The swaps went missing but luckily fully insured so you got the money instead. Still got it and it is minty. I was surprised by how much it went for.
