  1. Right now you can get 3 t-shirts for £22. Wear them inside out and you've got a cheap M otown & S oul logo.
  2. Better is subjective, Mick. I think it'd be hard to beat the record bar area at Wigan for those who were into buying and selling 45s.
  3. I think it was the early 70's when Godin asked readers of his B&S column to write to BBC to ask for more soul music coverage. I did, and to the best of my recollection, the answer was that the demographic didn't warrant more exposure. At the time I assumed the demographic referred to was based on colour rather than class.
  4. You missed one. "A political tool to challenge the dominance of middle class theatre" Sure that was the title of Richard's Obsessives c/u
  5. I went once to the Levenshulme venue. '69 I think as I went with a guy from school and he didn't stay on after Sept '69. Back of his SX200. Venue was on main road from Stockport to Manchester. Not far from a bikers cafe. Sure it was a weeknight and played overwhelmingly soul and Motown. From memory it wasn't a big place.
  6. It's getting mush too mush.
  7. My claim to fame on the dance floor is being with Dave Raistrick in a club in S.Carolina back in '81. We'd found a copy of "I'll pay the price" at the Wax Museum. I got the dj to play it and hit the floor. The odd spin and backdrop and nonchalantly glided back to my table. Then these girls started to come up complementing me on my footwork. To Dave's amusement they seemed to think I was a fantastic shagger. Once he'd stopped sniggering he noticed that some of the guys were not that happy with the attention I was getting and he thought it best we leave. Which we did rather hurriedly to avoid any unpleasantness.

  9. According to Clare I'm a lovely mover myself but then she would say that. I'm not interested in watching the videos you mention but just to stick up for Levanna I did catch her on YT being interviewed by some reggae guy where she chose a few soul and reggae tracks. She came across well and it put me on to an Italian reggae release that I wasn't aware of. If she makes a few bob from her videos good luck to her. I agree with you that the Proms is an odd setting for Northern. Very middle class but then I didn't go to the theatre to see your play because I thought going to the theatre was a middle class pursuit and no place for Northern. More Rosencrantz and Guildenstern than Tony & Tyrone.
  10. Had it in early 90's. Found it in N.O. for $3. Played it out once or twice maybe but then I don't dj really. Just local dos. Swapped I think with Dave Ripoles.
  11. What a shame. Known him years and spent many a night in Wigan record bar talking rubbish and having a laugh. He lived in Oldham then. Only about a month ago corresponded with him on here and he seemed pretty upbeat.
  12. I think the Black Sun was meant to be the Wheel.
  13. I'm thinking you've got the wrong end of the stick here. My memory is not what it once was but wearing a black fist round one's neck and one racing glove was a thing for some in the early days, maybe pre-Wigan. Think that arose from the Black Power movement in the US and that one iconic moment where the Black athlete raised a salute on the podium during the Olympics [1968 ?]. I'm guessing the white fists are meant to show solidarity as in White and Black together but unaware of the connotations with Aryan ideology in the USA. Something that always stuck in my mind was the girl appearing in one of the many documentaries talking about her experience of Wigan. It was a respite from the everyday racism she experienced in Scotland. Can't remember her name now and she died some years back but some on here will remember her.

  15. Obviously. It's the chutzpah.
  16. Don't often look at the site but have been aware, no doubt along with fellow anoraks, of these types of sales. Today I just came across these two close together. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275948126735?hash=item403fca420f%3Ag%3AVSsAAOSw5glksEFP&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwEJt8UaSEVpESqmpzOS2344Lc9ANOTNVH%2B7%2F0cdYmCqs1DLKcnzoEvV8JKJsCOj%2BxmycA1jNs6wUYuGvUuUdNyWiwrXaZMyxT9YQIA9toFa%2B9VQ7C%2BURsUK0Dg5hT%2F%2FjmDgq4kuHgWTUrINrBkaOzXAbk4nREjnFJ7MCOKhOck7HJmaaZZukPzPbOlfJ%2F94cKqekpigSSVuEbkLc59OaO2%2FOLRqS4HFiSAYVYxmHnVXwdy69Yops0k9vnSab5jO50g%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR8b4kL2uYg&LH_Auction=1 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204395907365?hash=item2f96f20925%3Ag%3AZ1IAAOSwwgFksEMe&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4PASLUSaULvf%2FjmfA4QZ5Ax%2BjMhwjzDpqPzMED3OWbtyo72Cjc5wFcEZji7RKxeJV3XskMTpya6NsnVvhHl9239VusqYKssZowWBEeKo7L5%2BO8%2FcTBLw%2F954m9CiN2Tl3QZVpfPFjg9Le2XAhsTBQ9XNt6kEIWBZs1ZXSdrv1P6kv0nxWkzA1olQlRuWjtAU4QDbKkvZ4rh7Uf%2F4CUJ2vBWRqNfEeB0IgiRuRKq%2FVvlSJwtKmzsLtmWM72KRo%2Fa3SQLkhoJcI44%2FQSb0A%2FYIVE5rplCU1RyqrVb%2FcU69nuN2|tkp%3ABk9SR8j4kL2uYg&LH_Auction=1 Note different user names both from Derby and of course similar wording. 17. Are you sure ? I could only find one copy at £200+ of "you look like an angel" Plenty of "It's love that really counts" I did feel describing "I can't forget about you" as a floorfiller stretching the truth somewhat.

  19. Glad you're keeping abreast of the situation, Mike. Some sites it's just a race to the bottom.
  20. Good luck to 'em. Moses Smith or Sam Smith ? No contest really. Must admit I get slightly wound up when academic talking heads like Sarah Raine put their oar in. Emerging in the early 70s as a direct response to the political climate of the era, northern soul acted as a source of cultural respite I mean WTF does that mean ? I'd say emerging in late 60's. For me discovering soul music '68. For others on here earlier. What political climate were we reacting to ? Student riots in Paris, Grosvenor Square and Vietnam, the sterling devaluation crisis of 1967 ? Yes it was something different to escape everyday work but then so is gardening, rambling, angling and a myriad other pursuits. The music appealed more than that on the radio or your local disco, Isn't that it ? You'd think from Sarah's take the clubs were organised by the SWP and we all foresaw the coming of Thatcher.
  21. It's still a slippery slope.
  22. Next it'll be allowing skis on the dance floor and it's all downhill from there.
  23. That Gospel Jubilee Singers went for £42.99 more than I thought. I guess label collector.
