Are you sure you're right about this info. My copy which I got in person from USA in lot where there wasn't a boot in sight has HITCH 'N' POST JODAX [bMI] TIME 2:35 Kinda darkish blue and very sharp writing. Checking Manship and Popsike the pictures of the originals appear the same as mine. I don't get this at all. Soul Sam plays Del-Larks at Middleton and he gets a thread to himself whilst if Joe Bloggs plays a boot or re-issue of same thing he's in for a slating. Fact is I like Del-larks,would like an original but surely there's some other 45 just as worthy of playing that I've not heard a thousand times!! For instance Lee Jennings on Star-track. No,I've not got that either so not trying to hype it but it's just a decent record that IMO you don't get to hear. Im sure everybody on here can come up with something similar. I think Greg hit it on the head earlier that there are too many djs playing same old originals, be they reactivated oldies or 20 year old newies, just because big name jocks have them and they don't appear to have an innovative approach at all, merely content to slavishly follow whatever is in fashion. I've heard guys play sets comprising "big" records from various Northern genres and just bung 'em altogether and you can tell they don't have a clue. So I think you can do what you want and it's fine and not a boot v. original situation but IMO more to do with widening a pretty stagnant attitude to listening and playing records. ROD

I think it's worth repeating here that if you have the 45 it's worth far less than you thought. If you don't have it then it's worth far more than you thought. ROD

Ivor, Im after that too. Took me a long time to find "Hope we have" on YDJ as I usually saw DJs with B. Acklin on other side, so there's at least one example of two DJ issues of "Im gonna miss you". I have "I lost you" on single-sided DJ so if there are double-sided copies out there then that's two examples. I would guess it exists in both formats. ROD

Well Dave, that is a demonstrative pronoun or adjective drawing attention to the person or thing either observed by the speaker at the time or understood, already named or in question. Now that's cleared that up, I agree Courcy according to Tim's guide is about £150 over whilst Brooks Bros is £148 under. With reference to another thread /index.php?showtopic=30460 How come the 45 you have is always worth less, and the 45 you haven't got is worth more than you thought. ROD

Well It would be the second known copy if you completely ignore my post!!! If you read it I'd guess it's at least the sixth and probably more. No axe to grind against John but his "astonishing" Luther Ingram issue also appears identical to the copy in my box, although mine is only VG++ I'd say. Vinyl demo with Detroit address and Atco distributed. I have no idea whatsoever what 45s are in collectors' boxes because every Northern 45 has not passed through my hands, although a lot have. I would think that John would agree with that as regards himself. ROD

This is going off topic somewhat but this feigned familiarity with Northern that some of the US sellers adopt is laughable. I noticed one guy who not only quotes the ubiquitous Guide but has started to refer to djs supposedly playing the track, usually Richard Searling!! Needless to say the records involved are invariably overpriced rubbish. ROD

I really only go for mintish 45s but I did weaken last week and won Quintessents "Image of a man" on Ebay for £126. I had it sent to a mate in US to save on shipping and he says it's rough but plays fine. As it was VG clean Im hoping it's not that rough and my mate is a condition freak so Im still hopeful it's not too bad. I'd really only seen a couple of copies over the years so I figured get it now or wait forever for a minter. So I guess I would now buy lesser condition copies but it would have to be something really hard to get. ROD

Manships Auction Prices Today

I saw that Bobby Bland "Shoes" go for a bit recently. I thought that was a sandal!! Jo Ann Hendeson 1954??!! Is that a misprint. Never heard it. ROD -
I go on Ebay quite a lot and I can't say that over past 4 years prices have particularly come down for 60's Northern. In fact Mint condition 45s appear to attract a premium price and that G condition only Salvadores went for £609!! However I think it is a case of just looking around and you can get 45s at prices that don't break the bank. This forum has a lot of 45s at fair prices. I got Quintessents other night on Ebay for £126. OK it was only "VG clean" but I've bought off guy before and label looked fine from picture. I thought I'd have to pay a lot more than that to get a copy. I guess that's due to it's lack of exposure. ROD

Anyone Seen This One Before? Motown Thing

Hello John, I had so much time on my hands when I was a full-time dealer but now I can see that I shoulda got myself a micrometer instead of wasting my time going fishing 3 days a week!! I just had a look at mine. No Pb, no dimples and found it in St. Louis. In thec absence of specialist tools I just looked at it in relation to a couple of 45s on Chess and USA which I assume are Chicago pressings and vinyl does appear thicker and more rigid. As far as I remember this copy is the same as 3 others I had and sold at Ritz in Manchester back in the 70's which came off a guy called Dave Berry in St. Louis who was a mate of Mark Edmund. At the time I think he said he got them offa guy who was something to do with the 45 but Im gonna email him to see if he can remember. So there may be more than one original St.Louis knocking about. Or maybe I've just not seen the dimples. Are they immediately evident on close inspection. ROD

The DJ copy of Precisions went for £75 on Ebay in last couple of weeks ROD

Kev, I'd forgotten guy's name on AFN although I thought it was on around 10pm but my memory is very selective. I do remember listening to him playing Stylistics "You're a big girl now" on Sebring [was it?] and thinking I must get that. Pete, many's the morning I set off for school at 8.30 and was in the local Stockport record shop at 9.30. Guy there used to write me a sick note for the teacher. Eventually my mum caught me and a mate [Richard Hillel if anyone knows him] in there wagging it and she dobbed us in to the school. Got 6 strokes of the cane and some lecture about letting down the school by being the first kids to play truant in the sixth form. But what an education we got in that shop. "Here she comes" on UK Parkway DJ for £1 [most of a week's dinner money]off "Little Louie". Didn't even know what it was but he said it was good. Very happy days!!!! ROD
-
Well me too but I must be older. My memories would be Keith West, Lemon Pipers, Simon Dupree's "Kites""Happy Jack", "Pictures of Matchstick Men". Don't know what our age gap is but those are some of the pop songs that stick with me and I think illustrates the difficulty of having a radio station aimed at the over 35s. Those few years between us make a big difference. The 70's pop IMO was absolute bobbins compared to the 60's. I really couldn't listen to a station playing any of those songs you listed. The only guy I'd go out of my way to listen to on the radio would be Mark Lamarr. ROD
-
Pete, Im sorry but 70's pop/rock leaves me unmoved. I like 60's reggae altho more into the lovers-rock type sound of 70's and 80's, rockabilly, doo-wop and 50's jump R&B, and 60's US garage. I don't count them as nothing!! ROD
-
Im a bit perplexed. If the station is aimed at the over 35s then what do I,born in 1952,and somebody else born in 1971 have musically in common. Im 16 when Beatles and Stones are in the charts, and they're listening to Rick Astley and Kylie Minogue at the same age. So a bit of a wide divergence there and Im wondering where the common ground is supposed to be. The whole concept sounds rather similar to the rebranded Smooth FM which plays disco and soul hits mainly from 70's and 80's with the odd 60's track [usually Motown] thrown in and is aimed at the same age group I'd guess from nature of the featured advertising. Did I see that there's a nightly Northern show starting at 8pm. I'd rather watch the TV or video although I suppose I could have it on over the net when Im on here but that's usually an opportunity to listen to a CD. Back in '69 I'd listen to Mike Raven or tune into American Forces Network from Germany. Never listened to UK radio cos I'd gotten into soul. Why would I want to start listening now to a station playing the Carpenters!! I remember Todd Rundgren, Mott the Hoople, Colin Blunstone. They were records you flicked past to find the good stuff. ROD
