  1. It was indeed awful. The worst one of those I've heard.
  2. It's a shame that it's come to this, but technology has advanced so much now, that I guess it was inevitable that shops like HMV would at the very least have to scale back. On a personal note, i've always been one that has liked to "physically" own the music, be that records, 8 track, cassettes or cd's. I can honestly say, 100%, that I have no downloaded music whatsoever, and this malarkey of downloading music off the myriad of sites that offer it for free, is totally wrong. EVERY single song on my computers, mp3 players or phone, I physically own as a hard copy, in one format or another. If HMV do go under, like the vast array of music shops have in the past, I for one will miss them.
  3. I don't know so much about sounds being revived, but big name artists having their music remixed with big orchestras has become very popular. Fingers crossed, one of the great names in Soul may be next. The one prediction i've made for 3 straight years now, has finally come true this year, with Mike Peters of The Alarm and Co Founder of the Love, Hope, Strength Foundation being honoured in the New Years Honours list for 2019, with an MBE. I know it detracts from the original question a bit, but he is an inspiration to all.
  4. Aye mate. There's a few of them. I just looked online and could find 3 on Carla, 8 on Karen, 1 on ATCO and 1 on Italian Atlantic. All I know for sure, or should I say, what I am told, is the Carla release came first, with I've Been Fooled Before on the (A) side.
  5. The release on Carla was a year prior to the Karen releases. Ain't sure but I think Jimmy Delphs on the Carla label is Red, and I think the original Karen release is a deep blue.
  6. Yup. When Otis in died The Epsilon's packed it in. Lloyd Parks joined Broadway Express, while John Whitehead and Gene McFadden formed The Talk Of The Town from the remnants of The Epsilon's.
  7. Now if you look really really carefully at that photo, on the right hand side, on the edge of the label, in amongst the map, and after the word "Michigan" it says USA. With that being up above the halfway point of the record, I would say almost for sure that it's a Philippines pressing as alan t said previously. The text around the outside of pressings there kind of runs from 10 o'clock through to 2 o'clock. Like this example As for the sleeve, you make your your own mind.
  8. The numbers are correct too, both the S-35068 and the N-K-N 684M01. They both match the Soul release, and the white label promo copy. The bits that don't look right, are (a) the sleeve, you look at the state of the record label, which is way short of mint, and then you look at the sleeve, and it looks new. Not a fold in it, not a tear, and (b) the text on the bottom is totally wrong for a US issue. I think that it's a foreign pressing (almost certainly asian), and there is text before the text visible on the photo. The only way to know for sure is to contact the vendor and ask for a photo with the record removed from the sleeve. I certainly haven't anything like it in my motown collection.
  9. Without seeing the full text on the bottom of the record label itself, it's difficult to say exactly, however, if the sleeve is to be believed and is genuine, it's from The Sound Of Young America, Album Favourites series, from 1971 onwards. Does the vendor on Ebay state what the flip side is?.
  10. I would assume that the type of function, would dictate more than anything else what the last four songs would be. Let's for arguments sake assume it's a Motown function, in which case, my last four songs would be preceded by, The Four Tops - I'm Grateful, then in order; The Spinners - We're Gonna Be More Than Friends Edwin Starr - If My Heart Could Tell The Story The Temptations - (Loneliness Makes Me Realise) It's You That I Need Kim Weston - After The Rain If it was a Northern Soul function, then maybe it would be these four songs, in this order. Jack Montgomery - Dearly Beloved Jackie Wilson - Because Of You Darrell Banks - I'm The One Who Loves You. Chuck Jackson - Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)
  11. I agree with what you say about Phil Spector's Christmas album. I also agree with what you say about him as a person too. But, like chalky says about James Brown, a lot of people do like his music, and he's quite correct when he says that many musicians and singers have their faults. Incidentally, it's his 79th birthday today too.
  12. I'm not a fan of James Brown either. The only songs of his I have are on compilation albums.
  13. OK, so yesterday was a huge day for soul music, with the death of James Brown in 2006. Today, however, is a more important day. (My Opinion) In 1999 we said our farewells to the legend that was the great Curtis Mayfield. Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Civil Rights Activist, and former member of The Impressions. In 2010 we said our goodbyes to Tamla Motown and Stax (amongst other labels) Singer, Songwriter, Arranger and Producer, Teena Marie, And in 2012 we said goodbye to Chess legend, singer Fontella Bass. However, with the sorrowful Boxing Day anniversaries out the way, there's something on a much less solemn but brighter note. Today is the 83rd birthday of Tamla Motown legend, Abdul "Duke" Fakir. Founder member of the original Four Tops, along with Levi Stubbs, Lawrence Payton and Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and the sole survivor. I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing "Duke" Many Happy Returns Of The Day for today, and long may they continue. I chose this song to celebrate the great man's birthday, basically because it's what brought them to the party, though they didn't really bop their way into the UK charts until the following year, with I Can't Help Myself. The Four Tops - Baby I Need Your Loving - 1965, Motown.
  14. If you're gonna talk Dwight, then this is his very best, in my opinion. Spyder Turner - I'm Alive With The Lovin' Feeling
  15. It's normally in the Sunday Channel 4 listing as Sunday Brunch, though this week's was called Christmas Brunch, and it's a cookery come celebrity chat show type of thing. This week's show apparently had Tony Blackburn on it. WoodButcher has kindly put you a link up in the post above to the show. Please, don't give me any agg for mentioning the TB name
  16. His name keeps cropping up, time and time again. I've a couple of his songs, but that's all. To be honest I didn't even consider him. Heaven help us if someone starts a female voice thread
  17. That's 4 of the 9 I originally stated.
  18. This thread brings back some memories. Yeah, Ken Cox was coming out of Casterton Road in Stamford at the time. Soul Bowl I believe. As for the agg at the time, one of the biggest problems was the Spalding lot against the Holbeach lot. If I remember correctly it was supposed to come to a head at the old bus station in Spalding one Sunday morning, but as far as I can tell you, that never happened. There's also a story from that era that a girl from Spalding had been roughed up somewhere in the old Lincoln Road area of Peterborough, which is supposed to have led to a car load from Spalding going down there the next day to seek retribution, but whether that really happened I don't know. I do remember that there was half a dozen from both Spalding and from Holbeach that was forever trying to cause trouble. I can remember odd incidents at the Fleet, but they were the usual pussies like Arnold, Armstrong and Co, and pathetically minor. That Arnold, I won't mention the christian name, was the one responsible for the Lincoln Drill Hall/After Dark Promotions incident, with the rozzers raiding the place because he had cocked his leg up the chippy counter just down the hill. There's two guys from Peterborough called Dave, and Winston that could tell you a lot more, but I lost contact a long time ago. I think that Dave lived in Yaxley at the time. As for the Stamford events, the name Russ Towers springs to mind, but I ain't dead sure of that.
  19. I think the lead singer of this lot might qualify. Brother of the great man himself, Joe Stubbs The Contours - Just A Little Misunderstanding - Gordy 1966.
  20. Yeah. A very very different and unique voice from the norm, pardon the pun.
  21. There's some good tracks on there mate. If I remember what I was told correctly, that Inspirations on 7 inch vinyl is rare, with the vocal on the flip. I do like the instrumental version of that Professionals song. It's one of my favourite instrumentals of all. That Emanons Orchestra instrumental tune is the one where the beginning always sounds like an mp3 recorded at 1kbps isn't it?
  22. Language, please
  23. Steve S 60 chalky You're not alone when it comes to that song Patches, or The Chairmen Of The Board's Version either. I don't dislike it, but it's not on any of my digital playlists. I kinda agree with you lot mentioning Bobby Bland, but I don't have a lot of his stuff, hence it never crossed my mind.
  24. ZZ Hill could sing. That "Nothing can change this love" is a classic. Maybe the most super bluesy song I like. Clay Hammond was another.
  25. Ah, I get you now. I was going on the You Tube photo to the song Warning that you put up. Thanks for putting me straight on People's Choice too. It was just one of those pieces of drivel in the back of my head that led me to ask. You finish off that post mentioning The Fi-dels and Steve Mancha. I've got a couple of things by the former, and quite a few songs by the latter. I like that Groovesville sound. However the stand out name you mentioned was Mel Davis. In my head, one song sticks out of his above all else, and I posted a link to the Darrell Banks version of it on the "Feel Good Friday" thread, and that's "I'm The One Who Loves You". Outside Motown, it's been my wife's favourite song for years and years. I've got an instrumental of it somewhere also.
