  1. By the time this thread comes to an end all the records to be played, will have been played on this thread So there will be no point in travelling from Blackpool to Warrington, anything good on TV ?
  2. Just spotted that we have lost another star Sonny Turner https://www.newsbreak.com/news/2485353268409/legendary-platters-singer-sonny-turner-dies-at-83 Memories of this for so many of us
  3. Not even funny that it was more of a success across the pond and ended up bootlegged.
  4. Manship's 5th Edition clearly has the label as Wilshire 108 and £2000 and in 7th Editon listed as Wilshire as well £1500, but is is an error as label is Wilstone as per label image John is getting old now and mistakes happen (but twice ?)

  6. Don't ruin my dreams of finding a box It got me to sleep last night
  7. The thanks should go to you buddy as well, for asking. What I love about these threads is info and brains getting together, making headway (and mistakes) and resolving history for future's sake. I say "bring it on" the more the merrier
  8. I was looking into Kent & The Candidates and read that they appeared in The Hill Top Club in Atchison which was destroyed by fire in June 1966 https://ilovestjosephmo.com/st-joseph-mo-photos/the-hilltop-in-atchison/ I loved the advert when they reopened (under the date) Oh and Kent & The Candidates were supposed to be behind "Gimme Little Sign" ? The release sheet says performed with (perhaps someone knows if they were the backing band ?) Does anyone other artists that performed there ?

  9. So sad to hear that Laurence Inkatha has passed on FB Most of you will most likely remember rushing to the dance floor at some stage in your dancing days or filling the floor in your DJ'ing days
  10. Was listening to the LP Carl Holmes Investigation and noticed that "Tramp" in Germany who reissued it (I noticed they had used the Publishing Company "Tramp" from the LP on C.R.S. as the same name brilliant) The notes drew me to Discogs and they quoted that Len Woods is an alias of Carl ? Tramp appeared not to know ? (please read below), unless Discogs have it wrong? Carl “Sherlock” Holmes started gigging in the early sixties forming Carl Holmes & the Commanders with whom he recorded a full length album for Atlantic in 1962 entitled Twist Party At The Roundtable. Later on he recorded a couple of 45’s for the Parkway and Verve labels. In May of 1966 a pre-Experience Jimi Hendrix gigged with the group but never recorded with them. After a final 45 for the local Philly label Black Jack, the group disbanded and Carl formed the Sherlock Holmes Investigation a solid outfit backed by a strong rhythm section packed with congas, vibes, flute, organ and sax. Philly’s Sigma Sound Studio was the place they recorded their sole album and Curtis R. Staten’s CRS Records was the label that released it. This album has it all! Smokin funk breaks in Black Bag, Investigation, Get Down Philly Town, It Ain't Right and some syncopated latin-inspired jams in Modesa. All these coupled nicely by some fine mellow numbers in Close To You, Think It Over and Your Game . And all but one (Bacharach/David's Close To You) written by a guy named Len Woods, a remarkable songwriter, no doubt! https://tramprecords.bandcamp.com/album/investigation-no-1 Anyway, there are some more releases on Discogs and 45cat that are not currently connected, which is why I wanted to start this thread and get some help please Is Carl actually Sherlock and Len, or just another guy ? And if this has been covered please take me there
  11. A website I found http://www.budrossinc.com/disco
  12. A write up from 1967 cashbox Seriously !!!!! mentions Goodway and Cap City in same section Am I going mad (again) with the Silhouettes (Segue and Goodway) connection, surely total and utter coincidence of the highest order
  13. Thanks Dave it is a shame we can't ID the guys (apart from David Morris) in the photo, maybe someone will That Acetate is a beauty
  14. You Tube TBF and your find is excellent, thanks. What page please ?
  15. Did you see the notes above, about the line up Dave please ?
  16. The Lovations consisted of Penny and Crystal Wilson, and the Saxons sisters. Apparently, their 45s were recorded with Pittsburgh jazz muscians including Nelson Harrison (Trombone), George Green (Sax), Butch Martin (Piano), Chad
  17. I never met Russ, is his real surname Winstanley as we passed the place in Wigan a few months back and that's a great coincidence ? I agree and bet it was going to be released but never got the airplay so shelved. Oh to find a box full
  18. I imagine a bit of tweaking will do wonders Original version on side A and remix Side B
  19. You are correct as all the write ups have suggested more members than in the photo, which is David Morris and four others which does not add up anyway (it would be Dave Morris and 5 others if you add Don Hogan, Tommy Ricks, Cleveland Hammock and Cliff and James Dunn.) Unless someone missed the photoshoot. If Doug Banks was one of them then 2 are missing I assume that all the others copied the info and perhaps Dave Moore can give his opinion
  20. Good read this with Major living in Southend and 1973 pops up and the drugs thing "He told me that the good times at OKeh ended when Columbia, the parent label, wanted Carl Davis and his artists to move their operation to New York. Davis refused, stayed put, and started his own label, Dakar (which would do well with Tyrone Davis and Hamilton Bohannon). “It had a lot to do with jealousy inside the company,” Lance said, “and problems that could have been solved but weren’t.”" (You know how when someone sets up a Soul night, so someone else then does ? Sounds a bit like The Motown move being copied or vice versa ?) "Later in his life, Major hit hard times. He stayed with Contempo for a couple of years, touring the Northern Soul clubs, and then went home, where he recorded for Playboy, his own Osiris imprint and Soul, the Motown subsidiary. He served a jail term for cocaine possession, lost most of his sight, and died in 1994." Artists, talent, ego, fame (and sometimes drugs) https://thebluemoment.com/2017/07/05/remembering-major-lance/
  21. Brilliant Andy, thanks and how did I miss this ? (age and stupidity me thinks are taking hold) http://doo-wop.blogg.org/the-dreamlovers-a129076088
