  3. Not like you Beeks! Hear what you're saying about someone wanting a break and asking for a spot might be the only way in. Just wouldn't want to do that personally and never found a need to ask. I guess it must be a lot harder these days to break in than it was in the early 70's. Back then, very few people 'had the records' (and the spunk & application to go with it). As a youngsta, I had plenty of both Nowadays, most folk have built up a bit of a collection, have grown up (and grown old) and many of them fancy giving it a go. So yes, I do see your point and fair play to them. Sean
  4. Must agree with you Joan. Only ever got close to doing that the one time. Told a guy I'd help him out and DJ his gig if needed... ... but he promptly said "no thank's, we're well sorted!" Never again! Sean

  6. It's a classic double sider! Been around forever and was a pretty big hit on issue. Gained a release in the UK too! The flip "Sweet Happiness" was a HUGE club sound, early 70's, oopt North. Sean

  9. Late 70's through early 80's my only source of income was from DJ'ing. I worked Night Clubs a couple of nights a week and at least one nighter every weekend. Guess I got into the habit of charging for my 'professional' services then. These days I don't rely on DJ money (good job eh! ) and do the odd gig purely for the love of it. More than happy to do so as the scene and my own circumstances are very different nowadays, but in the instance where the place is packed (1,000 people - as cited by Baby Cakes in post 8) and the DJ does a good 'professional' job then some recognition of that fact should certainly be in order. I Personally feel that all DJ's should at least be 'asked' (and not simply taken for granted ) and that promoters should budget and make it a proper consideration (as per Epics earlier post and my original comment in post 11). Think the onus is then on the DJ to offer quality and value. At the moment, me and Tats are doing a Summer BOGOFF deal - two for the price of one! Sean
  10. Fine, but for some people it is - and that's why they should be asked. If the DJ then decides not to charge then that's up to the DJ in question. Would a promoter book a Soul Sam or a Butch for a gig without first considering an appropriate fee? I think not. Sean
  11. That's the word. Raises the standards - and keeps them high. If a DJ decides to waive the fee (for whatever reason) that's up to him - but its only proper to be asked. Time is money... ...but its also nice to do it for the love! Sean
  12. A professional DJ and a decent promoter will normally agree the fee beforehand. Sean

  15. Some copies read "Dearly Beloved" others read "My Dear Beloved". I've got or had them both. The song is the same on both. Sean
  16. I don't believe "Funny Situation" / "There Aint Nothing i Wouldn't Do For You" came out on the UK in any form. I picked up a UK Cameo Parkway "I Really Love You" / "Standing In The Need Of Love" on UK Demo (for 10p) back in the 70's (turns up regularly)... but "There Aint Nothing" was always known as the 'US Only' one (I've got a pic cover copy of the US copy, tucked away). "Revelation Movement" 'Just A Little Misunderstanding' soundalike is probably the rarest UK 70's Soul 45, in my experience. 60's one off, UK rarities, gotta mention the BBC copy of the Impressions "Nothing Can Stop Me" which, after being made an offer I couldn't refuse, I eventually sold to Graham Coates.   20. Both tracks are from the Martha Reeves, Self Titled LP on MCA. "I've Got To Use My Imagination" is a cover of the Gladys Knight Buddah track and "Wild Night" a cover of the Van Morrison track. Came out in 1974. Sean
