  1. What can be done, someone suggested some sort of alliance like the scooter scene has/had. Would that work on the soul scene, would promoters be prepared to put egos and self interest to one side for the greater good of the scene.

Has worked in the past, Chalky.

Early 80's, Steve Croft, Chris King (/Terry Sampson) and Dave Thorley, all individual promoters at the time, had an alliance whereby they agreed to not clash nighter dates etc.

I think it went under the heading of '3 Voices' or similar.

I vaguely remember going with Steve to Stafford to a meet, back in the days of Cleethorpes, Bradford, Warrington, Top Of The World etc.

It certainly worked for a while and allowed all these venues to flourish, as I recall.

  3. You know, I stumbled across some old lists[thats what a sad man i am i`m afraid] and this very list from Gary S[ he used to go under the name of Blacknight Records].....He was very cheap to buy from even at the time....

    smile.gif........Ivor

Had some superb records from Gary over the years, Ivor.

Both off the Blacknight list and from visits to his warehouse, up a backstreet in Neepsend, Sheffield.

Always remember dozens of copies of the Gifted Four, sat in a puddle, propping one of the internal doors open

Had known him from being a youngsta.

Great taste in music and a really first class fella.

PS: I've got 'that' record for you.

Pm me your address and I'll get it in the post.

  4. Sean I would defend your right to give this record the thumbs down 'til my dying day, but I'm convinced that its over-exposure is at least a part of the problem.

Strange situation, isn't it, that fewer copies leads to over-exposure.

But, if that's the case mate, I hope someone turns up a mountain of 'em!

  5. ^

The falsetto vocal and flugel horn are distinctive and, to my ears at least, pretty accomplished. Taking monetary value out of the equation this is a good record. Not the greatest record ever made, certainly, but still far more than adequate.

To each his own Gareth, but I've played the Horn since I was 8 years old and there's nothing 'accomplished' or even 'adequate' about it - to my ears!

Must admit, the lead guy's a better vocalist than me though.

    But only just

  6. those who pull this tune to bits are talking bollocks bcoz you must rememba the soul of it is in the imperfection whether it be vocally or arrangement or lyrical some tunes do get up ya nose after a while even class wigan oldies this is why tunes like this are fundamentally refreshing. give the small time guys a break for god sake and enjoy the part humility of the final product .

Sorry chaps, but personal taste is by definition 'personal'.

Its not bollocks to not like something.

    That's nonsense.

It might enjoyable or refreshing to you fuzzj, but I've been hearing it played out for 20+ years... and would much prefer never to hear it again, thank you!

  7. dont know this record personally, but the rare breed were a white group, along the same lines as the turtles and many other west coast groups. i had a record by them on dot, a uk issue and, for the life of me, i cant remember that title either!,but it was released around 67....of course i could be entirely mistaken and this group on mgm may have been black.

    rob.h

Think you might be referring to the American Breed, Rob, and probably their version of "Bend Me Shape Me" on UK Dot.

  8. Sean i find this hard to believe after i saw you getting down to Gavins Jazz/Latin set at Soul Essence,or was that getting down behind the bar :yes:

    Dave f.......

    Yes Dave.

Let's have No Jazz, No Funk, No Junk...

...and I won't have to drink myself into a coma anymore!

    Sean

  9. The vocal doesn't do it for me, but the instrumental is very good.... are you sure you listened to the right track ???

Otherwise, each to their own, but surprising for one so enlightened..huh.gif

    Surprised that you're surprised Cliff.

    I don't like crap vocals.

And there's too many good vocal records out there to waste my time (or dosh) on instrumentals.

If I'm honest... I no longer believe in Miracles.

Especially since hearing this... and the Mark bloody Cappani version

  10. Sounds better in a full room of dancers than offa keyboard.

Sorry guys, the only way that would sound any good to me is if the room full of dancers were bikini clad nubiles... in custard.

Which I very much doubt we'd find anywhere near Mansfield.

    I'm with Rob.

It's an assault on the ears.

    Music for deaf people.

Adding it now to my list of 'pet hate' records.

    Sean

  11. lololol...i prefer what you play along side those two sean

    moldie

It's just one of my 'pet hate' records (alongside the Ultimates, Shawn Robinson etc. etc.).

I was telling Steve G the other week at Yarmuff how the vocals grate on me.

Great backing and all that, but the falsetto is all over the place.

A bit 'pitchy' for me dawg' Randy Jackson might say!

    Sean

  12. thanks for the info nev......the thing is with owning a tune like that you gotta have the tunes to go with it...no good playing it along side the snake or out on the floor

    moldie

    Agree.

Its not as good as either of those.

  13. Thanks Sean, but my point is, it's not what you would call allnighter music is it? Which in my humble opinion should be, mainly 60's, in your face, get up and fookin dance music. That's what I'm talking about......yes.gif

No Phil, it's not what most people would call allnighter music.

    It's Just Soul.

And the dancefloor is rammed... all night... (or at least until we chuck them out) biggrin.gif

    Sean

  14. Chalky, I have never been to Thorne, so I don't feel entitled to comment, but isn't it mainly crossover / 70's there? Same with the other venue Just Soul isn't it?

    Phil.

    Hi Phil,

Just Soul is a straightforward Soul Night.

It's not a 70's night or a Crossover night - nor is it a Northern Soul night.

We have no guest DJ's. We're just four Soul fans who play really great music.

We've over 150 years of collecting between us - and tens of thousands of Soul records to go at, spanning five decades.

Some of what we play is rare, some of it is common, some of it is exclusive.... all of it is real Soul music.

    Quality is the only criteria.

And Soul lovers come from all over the country to hear it.

Sounds played and to be played include the following:-

    • Willie Walker - Runaround
    • Spencer Wiggins - Breaking Point
    • Curtis Mayfield - No Thing On Me
    • William Bollinger - I Won't Have To Cry No More
    • Sam Dees - Funny
    • Bobby Bland - I Wouldn't Treat A Dog
    • Candi Staton - One More Hurt
    • Lee Reynolds - Love Comes From Above
    • Bobby Womack - Runaway
    • Four Tops - Still Water
    • Inell Young - I've Never Considered
    • Paul Kelly - You Make Me Tremble
    • Betty Everett - Getting Mighty Crowded
    • Deena - Bring Your Lovin' Back
    • Willie Hutch - Sho' Give You love
    • Dan Greer - You're Slipping Away
    • Otis Clay - Nothing To Look Forward To
    • Sharon Jones - I Learned The Hard Way
    • Marshall McQueen - Any Woman Can Tell

    .... and loads more.

If you'd like to know more, visit www.JustSoul.co.uk

But in short, we're not running a 'Northern Soul' night nor are we holding a 70's or crossover event.

It's a Soul night, playing only the very best, authentic, Black American soul music that we can find.

    It's 'Grown up' Soul.

    'Gloves off' Soul.

    Just Soul.

    Sean

  15. Sean Hampseys Just Soul has it's share of Travellers too from what I hear.

Thanks for the plug Chalky.

Our event has people travel from all over the UK, places as far apart as South London and Middlesbrough.

Just for the record though, we play music until 2:00am... and then spend another hour saying goodnight :D.

  16. Oh Ian really!!!!

Next you'll be telling us that Althea & Donna who had the hit "Uptown Top Ranking" featured Aleta Lattimore and Donny Hathaway

The Yorks ensemble will be coming on here to tell us how they found one in someones toilet, and it's in their garage etc etc.....

Can't get away from it though Gwen & Ray is a good solid norman oldie.

To be fair Steve, that was always the strong rumour back in the Mecca days, when it first turned up.

A rumour got around that it was George & Gwen McCrae. And as a wordplay, you can see how it got there.

Course, it was total ballocks, we all realised later, but by that time Ian had bought a one way ticket to LA, so he kinda missed the revelation!

    Sean

    PS:

It's really Gwen Guthrie & Ray Charles.

But I might have just made that up.

  17. the record is in storage at Rob's. it might be rare but it's pretty awful!, although i have never played the flip,it is nice a deep trackwhich Baz has just posted up.

    Tats

Can only imagine what you two have got 'in storage' from all your buying trips together.

That said, I've seen the state of Robs garage... so I'm volunteering to come and help you both sort 'em out.

one for you... one for Rob... one for me!

    Sean

  18. Not quite "Tell me a lie" is it Sean?no.gif

    Now that was an album!thumbsup.gif

    Phwooooooar!

    Agree John.

    Solid throughout.

    The surprise package of 1982.

Another Muscle Shoals masterpiece... and the songwriters were in a different league!

    :g:
