  1. For what it's worth I marginally prefer the no horns - no backing singers version of Willie Walker myself but maybe that's because it is the one I heard first.

    Yep - Me too Gareth.

It's the one i heard first too, but that's not why I prefer it.

Honestly feel the Horns and Girls take away that haunting, mellow and 'empty' feel in the original (and, I love Horns as a rule, but they're way OTT here).

    :D

  2. So who ended up with Linda then - anyone on here?

    It wasn't me John.

I quite fancied it, but was only prepared to go to around two fifty.

I'm sure there's another copy, out there somewhere, for me...

    ...just gotta find it! :o)

A well deserved payday for Sebastian though, so I'm happy!

  3. Not so much a different mix Sean, the Jap LP came from an earlier stage of production with no brass and backing vocals.

Sorry, just thought, I'd plug ours!

Yep, just played 'em side by side and its clear that the Brass and Backing vocals are added later, as you say.

    yes.gif

So while we're plugging, is this a good time to say that another, equally BRILLIANT tune, in the same mould, is the AWESOME Willie Walker track I've been playing "Runaround" - yet another unreleased Sound Of Memphis gem and also, hopefully, out this summer... :-)

  4. Nice LP Kev. 'Just To Let Him Break Your Heart' is one of my all time favourites

Mines a strange one - it is not the re-issue but it is on the blue Epic label rather than orange unless it was re-issued circa 77/78?

That is a strange one Mike.

Never seen a blue label before.

I recall reading an interview in Blues & Soul soon after the albums release, wherein Lou said the album was very poorly promoted, sold a pittance and was deleted soon after coming out, so I can't imagine when the Blue label came from.

Would it have been late 70's or early 80's? Is it a US copy or a Brit issue, as per Gayle Adams, Bobby Thurston etc?

Certainly agree with you on 'Just To Let Him Break Your Heart' (magnificent record and very rare on a 45) but the entire LP is Top Drawer, top to toe.

  5. cheap as well was it not sean. from the early days of ebay?

    dave

    S'right Dave.

Very early days of eBay, a dealer, who's store I'd visited only months before, listed it as "I HAVE SEARCHED" on a ten dollar 'Buy It Now'.

I've had better records off the guy (like Pete & Ken, its not really my cup of tea either) but for 10 dollars, I guess it was worth having.

  6. Hi,

Are you anything to do with urbanlandmusic?

Do you know who they are?

    Thanks, John

Paul Kyser, founder of Urbanland Music (https://www.urbanlandmusic.com/).

Urbanland Music and it's subsidiaries was founded in 1999 by Paul Kyser, a world known songwriter, arranger, conductor, producer and record company owner. Kyser worked and built relationships with just about all of the artists from the late 60s and 70s era. Kyser wrote over 30 hits in his career as a record producer. During the 90s Kyser decided to bring back the 70s Sweet Soul sound to the stage.Kyser bought back groups like Black Ivory who hadn't sung in years. That's when Urbanland was founded. To promote 70s music entertainment in a big way. (https://web.archive.org/web/20070423165902/https://www.urbanlandmusic.com/)

  7. Ah!

    Thanks for the link.

    Not bad.

Much prefer the Atlantic mix (but maybe that's cos I've been playing it for the past 35 years).

Far more subtle, less frantic and much higher quality in every department.

JR says the Tomahawk was probably only a Demo, so it figures.

I seem to remember this copy being on eBay 4-5 years ago, but don't recall what it went for.

    Think it's pretty scarce though.

  8. Hi - does anyone know what kinda price this is and how rare ?...guess the answer to the first question will guide me for the second.... cheers

Dunno, but I play it out often on UK Atlantic (which cost me about 50p when new).

Is it the same mix as the UK ATL 45 do you know?

The LP version is certainly different.

  9. If he did pass away I don't recall hearing about it, Rob.

I've racked my brains and I can't remember hearing anything of his demise.

Born in 1954, he'd only be 56 (if he's still around) but he was one hell of a big guy (Billy Stewart proportions) so who knows, maybe another 'early' one.

  10. :g:

Relax you guys. I realise you were having a subtle, but joking, 'pop' Nev.

But, like Mike, I don't think some folk have grasped the concept yet.

A bad record is a bad record, regardless of the price - likewise a good record is a good record, regardless of the price.

The likes of me and Mike are really only interested in the music itself... and will comment on the merits of the tune regardless.

I can honestly say I've never been turned on... or turned off by the market 'value' of a tune.

It truly is what comes out of the speakers that counts.

And all the rest is propaganda

  11. ffs he's done far better that this ....it sounds like he's just been asked to make up some words to a tune on the spur of the moment in a jazz club...get over yourself boys biggrin.gif

You're right Nev, he has done far better than this, but an average Willie Tee record is still better than most out there... and for years I've collected everything I can by the man...

    ...and I'm still looking!
