Just read a report on the recent passing of the great Johnny Daye. His excellent 'What I'll Do For Satisfaction' and 'Stay Baby Stay' are amongst my favourite Stax 45's. Rest in Peace. The 'scene' was on 'life support' Chalky. Wigan was on its way out. The Mecca, Cleggy and Samanthas had all gone, along with all those other great venues of the early and mid 70's. Clifton Hall was the last chance saloon. And it was incredible. Number one with a bullet. I hardly ever missed a nighter, at the time, despite professionally DJing most weekends. Then working at the Windmill on a Sunday, with a superbly progressive music policy, it seemed logical that I should join the team. The music was fresh and vibrant and the 'one room for all' approach gave the scene the 'shock treatment' it needed. 60's fans actually found that they could enjoy new and recent music! It was a good few years after before it all started going backwards again... but it was good while it lasted. Hi Nick, sorry only just seen this. It was a great alnighter early days. I played both upstairs (60's / Northern) and downstairs (Modern) which made it a very long night for me. Pretty tough shift as I was newlywed at the time and my weekends were stuffed and the pressure was on as the Mrs wasn't really on the 'niter' scene at the time. I eventually gave Steve Croft notice but he pleaded for me to stay on the rosta. As a good mate it was hard for me to say no. We had been a pretty good team. I went on and did Warrington for him a couple of times, but I'd really had enough, burnt out after continuous weekends away and I finally broke the addiction and managed to quit. Ady confirmed that the Kent single was the first time the track had appeared on a 45. The LP was its first vinyl release - therefore the original vinyl release - but as Ady said, nobody would expect you to lug around an LP simply because it was 6 months before. That'd be ridiculous. Some of this OVO stuff is a real joke, you know folks. High time we started talking about musical merit, rather than media and format. It's a lot more satisfying than stamp collecting! Sean

I had the immense privelige of playing this superb track for many months, as an exclusive for Kent, a few years ago. And I still carry it everywhere and play it in every set I can (played it at Soul Essence, Great Yarmouth Weekender, t'other weekend and it went down a bomb at Stoke Allnighter last year too!). Will make a great 45 but meanwhile DJ's should keep it plugged on whatever legal format you can play it on! And if that means CD, so be it! It's all about the music. Cheers, Sean

You're right mate. It did go huge! I found it originally in Lincoln Market for about 10p. When Crofty and I used to sit down and decide what we were going to play that night he wasnt too keen, so I played him the other side (Cup Runneth Over) which he liked even less, so we agreed to go for 'Lady In Red' as the better side! As usual we'd both play our 'tips' twice each in a night, so by the time the night was over it was a Monster! Was the first of my tunes to get 'bootlegged' so I guess at that point I knew I had a hit on my hands Sean

Here we go folks with what will almost certainly be the final podcast of this particular 'Early 80's Monsters' series. Bound to be a few here you've either forgotten... or maybe never knew in the first place! The last deep dip into the back of the 80's Playbox comprising more 'almost forgotten' and rarely heard records that were very decent floorfillers at Rotherham Clifton Hall, The Rotherham Windmill and Cleethorpes Winter Gardens at the time. Along with a couple of real biggies, here are some of the lesser known sounds of the day. These were some of the 'edgier' tunes that were played on the early 80's Northern Soul scene... and at the very birth of the Modern Soul scene. Several are probably due a revival and I'm sure we will see some of these making their way onto playlists in the 21st Century.
