    Hi all, Well, its that time of year again Exactly 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, here we go again! Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers. You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet! You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months. It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves. It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster! We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' Whatever floats your boat! No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year! So come on.     Great call Brett! I think I told you about the day, almost 12 months ago, when I nearly fell out of the shower as these two tracks rattled through the speakers! Since then both sides have become staple tunes up at Just Soul and both typify what three things the scene is really all about these days... ...Quality, Quality & Quality! So, it may seem as if its been a long time coming, but end Jan 2011 is when the 45 hits the streets. Get ready for what is certainly one of the very best releases in a very long time and demand is bound to be huge. On the 'Quality' front, I played the Test Pressing up at York last weekend and (strangely) it sounded even better than the CD (which should please the OVO Boys immensely)! Hats off to the Ace boys, Ady, Tony and Dean for continuuing to deliver the goods. Fabulous Real Soul Music that deserves all our full support. Cheers, Sean

    Harrison Calloway, Mike Haynes, Steve Patrick, Harvey Thompson, Kent Bruce, Clayton Ivey, Reggie Young, James Robertson, Tommy Couch Jr, David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Wolf Stephenson, George Jackson, Frederick Night, on the Players and Producers side... ...with classic songs by Sam Dees, Frederick Knight, Willie Clayton, Frank Johnson, Paul Kelly, Clayton Ivey, Terry Woodford, George Jackson... ...it's proper Mike.     So good to hear, Ian. You've made my day to hear that sales are going well on these. What that really means to me is that more and more people are discovering the delights of Southern Soul - the real deal! And 'Shinehead' and Arkwright (Dave) the 'essential' type comments are much appreciated. When I was a kid, the two 'essential' albums were 'Motown Chartbuster Volume 3' and 'This Is Soul' from Stax / Atlantic. When compiling 'Love & Jealousy' and 'I Get My Groove' that's kind of what I had in mind. 50 Great tracks that every Soul fan should own. I realise the game has changed, its a different market and a different time, but with your 'Special Price' approach, I'm chuffed to nuts to think that these could be heading anywhere towards that direction. Now we've got even more to go at (with the Brunswick and Malaco catalogues available to us ) I think the next bunch are going to be even closer to the mark. Be assured, they are coming on very nicely, Ian. Working with this breadth of a catalogue is an absolute pleasure. And the best is yet to come! Compliments of the season to you too sir. Sean

    It's rare I rave about, or get the chance to plug anything brand new these days, but (as I've not seen anything on here regarding this Lady - and I'd hate ya'll to miss out) I'm knocked out by the new MALACO album from Queen Emily. Its light years ahead of most 'new' product, featuring as it does the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, with Clayton Ivey, Jimmy Johnson and James Robertson and some fabulous songs from the likes of Sam Dees & Frederick Knight. Brought me right back to that day in 1974 when I unwrapped and placed on the turntable for the very first time that stone soul classic album 'Woman To Woman' from Shirley Brown. Yep - it's that good, it evokes such precious memories. Grown up lyrics, well sung with a tight band of REAL musicians... bloody hell, I've waited a long time for Black America to produce anything this good. Such a refreshing change. If you buy only one new album this year, make it this one! It's the Real Deal. So, if you haven't already....     It's not JJ Barnes. Its Steve Mancha. Steve didn't like the song, so Don Davis put it out as the Holidays on Groove City. Then the track appeared on the 1969 Volt LP 'Rare Stamps' wrongly credited to JJ Barnes and the UK Stax 45 (the flip of JJ's 'Baby Please Come Back Home') the same. JJ Barnes was never happy about the situation as he felt insulted that a record he'd had nothing to do with could go out (twice!) under his name. Sean
