  1. As an aside, anyone ever seen an issue of the Millie Jackson? Cos I havent. Sean
  2. After five laborious, confusing and often nonsensical pages, this one sentence made it all worthwhile; "kick me in the bollocks if you must, but at 63 I could'nt give a toss" Wonderful stuff! Thank you. Sean
  3. PM Sent John. Cheers, Sean
  4. Hi John, Hope you're well mate. What would be the timescales on this? Busy time in my life, but might be up for such an adventurous concept :0) Sean
  5. Marvels Advert from Oct 1969 showing 3 members. Annette Snell was certainly solo by this time. Incidentally, I once saw where she'd signed a little spot on the wall, inside the doorway of Muscle Shoals Sound, only a few months before she was killed in the Air Crash. Sean
  6. Think the Skipper Lee 45 is probably the rarest Ovide 45. A one-off? Sean
  7. You can't mean Margie Alexander. You must mean Margie Hendrix. Some good photos of the Clyde Killen collection of Posters on Flickr. Here's Joey Gilmore; 25 Great Posters here; https://www.flickr.com/photos/clender/sets/72157603899711082/with/2257572581/ Sean
  8. Despite the 3 and 6 on the matrix, I'd have thought the Orange was first and Yellow second. The Typesetting on the yellow is as used on later issues, and typical of a product remaining on catalogue for a while after first issue. Sean
  9. The Detours is a cover of Bobby Moore's "TryTo Hold On" on Scepter which was a Massive Disco hit mid 70's, written by Harold Beatty. I've known about the cover since it came out, never thought much about the group behind it; it's just a cover of a Disco smash! Got me curious now though Bob Best, Sean
  10. Midnight Mover is a fantastic book. Worth 56 bucks of any Soul fans money. Sean
  11. I picked this up in Memphis a few years ago for a couple of Dollars. Seen it go for crazy money, but I did see one go through eBay in the past two weeks for about 15 bucks. Sean
  12. Great thread folks. :0) Just remembered I have a small label version of 'Be Thankful For What You've Got' by the Deltones. It's a really raw 'crossover' sounding thing and it must be a rare one, but sooo cool. Must give it a whirl sometime. Sean
  13. If you bought it recently from the states, off eBay, probably came from Rick Hall's son, Rod, who has raided his Dads shed in recent months. He's also selling the George Jackson Verve issue. Both immaculate Original stock copies and great Soul records. Sean
  14. Hi Rick, Think it came from (and was found by) Ian Dewhirst, if i'm not mistaken. Think I heard that Steve G owns it now, but don't know that for a fact. Sean
  15. Difficult to keep up with all the 'rules' Roger. I suggest an online Rule Book, which could be continuously updated (by the regulatory body, of course) would be a really useful tool for DeeJays. We could check online before a gig, or register to receive email bulletins, to avoid any unfortunate misdemeanours (bearing in mind that ignorance is no excuse). Sean
  16. Played LP tracks all my working life. Can't imagine why any Soul DJ would limit their playlists entirely to 45. The LP only sets I've heard over the years, particularly from Steve Plumb, are always refreshing, entertaining and enlightening. Who in their right mind could object to that? Say no to Format Fascism. Sean
  17. Nice to see this GREAT record being talked about. Yes, I played it at Soul Essence and have done for the past 5+ years. Has a huge following at Just Soul. Almost emptied the floor on a couple of occasions, but now it's getting hugely appreciated, not just by the collectors, but (with the current popularity of mellow Soul) also by the dancefloor. I got my first copy from Rupert, but have scoured the net ever since and manage to unite several folk with copies over the years. It really needs to be in the hands of the many. I speak to Buddy regularly. He's one of the nicest guys in the world. Suffered a stroke a few years ago, but now he's on the road to recovery and was recently in the Studio on a new album, which is a Country Soul, Gospel set. The story behind 'There's a Way' is a cracker. He's an Alabama boy, but having recorded at Muscle Shoals / Sheffield (the Quinvy 45) some years earlier, he made the trip to LA to doorstep Jerry Fuller at his studio. Fuller had him wait three days in the reception, before he finally had him in the studio to sing! (Like a scene from 'The King of Comedy'). But Fuller recognised the talent and had him stay around (living in his Pool House for 6 months) while they put together the 4 Capitol tracks. In his time he performed with David Ruffin, Wilson Pickett, William Bell and many more. A great unsung Blue-eyed Soul Man and a real Gentleman. Sean
  18. Lovely old tune, and yes it is Jobete. Both Issues and Demo's are White, so you may have seen an Issue and took it for a Demo. Sean
  19. Several Coral releases were Jobete, presumably because of Berry's relationship with Brunswick. Exotics - Like You Hurt Me - Coral Exotics - Let's Get Together - Coral Frances Burnett - Sweetie - Coral Frances Burnett - I Love Him So - Coral (Written by Berry & Smokey) Frances Burnett - Too Proud - Coral Frances Burnett - How I Miss You So - Coral etc. Sean
  20. Yep - And Big Maybelle 'Oh Lord' also, all 'Smooth E-Groover's of the highest order!
  21. I used to play Eloise 'If You Don't Watch Out' on a 45. Still have it. Nice pic sleeve too! It's an old Bell / Creed number originally recorded on the Stylistics, which is also quite nice and can be found on the flip of 'Peek A Boo' UK AVCO. Worth a listen. Also, Peter, you might remember Eloise Laws '1,000 Laughs' on ABC, I used to play at Cleggy, after Mary Chapman gave me a copy, saying 'dedicated to all those who 'used' to be on the Northern Soul scene'. Sean
  22. Used to play "Make It Look Good" off my shiny UK demo, many years ago. Nice record, know very little about the artist. Sean
  23. Its the BIGGEST thing to have happened in Lincolnshire EVER! The guy has a stunning repertoire of his own HAPPY / I FORGOT TO BE YOUR LOVER / YOU GOT THE LOVE I NEED / MAN IN THE STREET / NEVER LIKE THIS BEFORE / IT'S HAPPENING ALL OVER / SOMEBODY'S GONNA GET HURT / ANY OTHER WAY etc... and having been owner of the owner of the legendary PEACHTREE record label, the possibilities beyond his own vocal cuts are mouth watering... producer of 'SEVEN DAY LOVER' and Eddie Billups 'ASK MY HEART' etc. Good Lord! This could be truly INCREDIBLE! Awesome job Ady. Best news I've heard since SPENCER! Sean
