Hi Sean,
I know Steve's was early 90's, sure he was doing it when he frequented Thorne?
A mate in Chesterfield had everyone of RS's "Soul Source" on Hallam on tape.
I think Thorne will have still been going at the time Chalks, yes. And Steve did frequent around that time too (He came to Yarmouth also, around the time he was doing the show).
They were a blast 'Interesting Soul' presented in a way that only Steve 'interesting' Davis could!
Wonder who the mate in Ches is that has the Soul Source Recordings? I have many, but couldn't say i have them all. That'd be some collection mate.

didn't someone called Richard Searling have a radio show as well
Snooker star Steve davis also had one, Radio Invictus I think.
But unles it was national or you lived within range of the signal you never heard any of them back then.
Hi Chalky,
Richard's 'Soul Source' was a few years after John Green's 'Soul Shotgun' - but it was bloody awesome and certainly landmark Radio for 'Northern' Soul Music in the UK! Still have many of these shows on tape.
I also have all of the Steve Davis shows on tape. Probably 75 - 100 of 'em, and some superb music on there, but this would have been early-mid 90's and with very little 'Northern' interest..
Course, nowadays, everyone's a Radio Star.... lol

John Green's "Soul Shotgun" was a weekly, 2 hour, show circa 74 / 75 on Radio Hallam, during the Northern 'Boom Years!'
He played all the Top Northern releases of the day, alongside the 'hot' new releases that were getting plays, 'Boogie Man Orch' 'Ernie Bush' 'Fantastic Puzzles' etc.
A very influential show at the time.
As a matter of interest, just found this snippet from a '75 Dave Godin column in B&S;
John Green of RADIO HALLAM's "Soul Shotgun" fame tells me that he recently conducted a poll amongst his listeners to find out their top favourite Northern Soul Sounds, and we thought you might like to see the results before they go on the air. He will be broadcasting numbers 20-11 inclusive on his show which goes out on October 18th, and numbers 10-1 inclusive on October 25th. Here they are.
- Larry Williams & Johnny Watson "Too Late"
- Eddie Parker "Love You Baby"
- Tobi Legend "Time Will Pass You By"
- The Invitations "Skiing In The Snow"
- Earl Wright "Thumb A Ride"
- James Bounty "Prove Your self A Lady'
- Major Lance "You Don't Want Me No More"
- Dean Parrish "I'm On My Way"
- The Carstairs "It Really Hurts Me Girl"
- Gloria Jones "Tainted Love"
- Eddie Foster "l Never Knew"
- Rufus Lumley "I'm Standing"
- Jerry Cook "Hurt On The Other Side"
- Billy Butler "The Right Track"
- Bobby Paris "Night Owl"
- George 'Bad' Benson "Super Ship"
- Mike Post Coalition "Afternoon Of The Rhino"
- Lou Pride "I'm Coming Home In The Morning"
- Sam & Kitty "I've Got Something Good"
- The Soul Twins "Quick Change Artist"
All well worth listening out for . . .

Steve's price of £25 was fine I thought, it's not rare on Vocalion, £25 or thereabouts is what I usually sell it for. A demo would be a different proposition.
Agree Pete.
I'm still in the market for a Demo incidentally
Will pay more than £25 :0)

It has that Northern Soul X-Factor that Mr Vickers talks about,
Nice idea Jock; 'Northern Soul X-Factor'.
Can see it now, Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh auditioning the likes of Joey Delorenzo, Joe Jama and Eddie Parker!
"Welcome to boot camp Mr Delorenzo, you've got that cheeky 'Chico' smile all the girls go for and you made the song your own"
"Mr Jama, we really like you. You owned the stage and I reckon you'll be the housewife's choice! Yes, come back next week"
"Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, that was utter rubbish. Not what we're looking for at all - all that screaming and shouting... you'll never sell records in quantity"
Next!

The 1971 UK Philips release - 6006 117 - is a version of Willis Wooton "Your Love Is Indescribably Delicious" by Rory McDonald.
Last time it changed hands, I think £400 was the figure, but its a hell of a lot rarer than that price would suggest.
Will dig some of these things out and post scans, once the suns gone down! :0)

I have the Handwritten Test Press of Billy Cole too Paul. Also have the Paramount issue of Samuel E Wright. This thread is about the most expensive 45's but certainly amongst the rarest would be the 'Revelation Movement' withdrawn press on UK RSO.

Remember this coming out.
The first UK was Mowest 3002, it was reissued, on Mowest 3024, mid 70's, to satisfy 'Northern' demand... and the Black Tamla Motown came out some years later when the Mowest logo was truly canned, but keeping the 3024 Catalogue number.
Never around in great quantity.
Never released as a US Mowest issue!

PS: Earlier thread here;

It will have been 'Love Uprising' by Mr T on Dakar, Russ.
Also done (originally) by the Chi-Lites and Jackie Wilson, Otis Leavill, Joyce Lawson.

That said, most decent DJ's played it off the LP as a new release.
Some total bull talked lately about what can and cannot be played.
LP tracks have been played FOREVER on the scene.
Get it bought - Get it played.

Agree with ya Kev. Exceptional soul for under a tenner.
Or as some muggins said to me once "It's alright but ya can't dance to it"
[media=]
Amazin, was given this by a lad at work, back in '72, for the same reason Dave.
His fave record was 'Cool Jerk' so I can see why it wasn't really his cup o' tea, in retrospect!

As Bob suggested; With slightly different title. A fave Linda Jones Loma 45 of mine.

Just as long as you've not got selly tape on the "deep" flip Sean
Yep- - the flipside is a goodie Dave :0)

I had this covered as Roscoe Shelton at Bradford Queens Hall, early 80's.
Think I've still got it somehere with the odd bit of old sellotape on the runout grooves, lol
Buy now from Flynny - One of the best guys to deal with on the planet, in my experience.

As an aside, anyone ever seen an issue of the Millie Jackson?
Cos I havent.

Well, I lost the plot after reading a good few posts, however my take on 'Modern Soul' is that most of it sucks. Were at last Soul Bowl do in Rushden, I must be a troglodite, OK, Lens Den got good reviews, AND I know Stevie P extremeley well, but with the greatest respect I stayed out of Lens Den......why, 'cause I (personal opinion only) thought the tunes were shite AND I could not dance to them,m the tunes in the main room were excellent........kick me in the bollocks if you must, but at 63 I could'nt give a toss.
Bottom Line.....everyone to their own tastes
AND I have no problem withy CD's, great format, beats getting up, domestically, every 2 minutes to put another single on.
After five laborious, confusing and often nonsensical pages, this one sentence made it all worthwhile;
"kick me in the bollocks if you must, but at 63 I could'nt give a toss"
Wonderful stuff!
Thank you.

Hi John,
Hope you're well mate.
What would be the timescales on this?
Busy time in my life, but might be up for such an adventurous concept :0)

Think the Skipper Lee 45 is probably the rarest Ovide 45. A one-off?

Dj's I Wanna Hear Out More At Allnighters
in All About the SOUL
Posted · Edited by Sean Hampsey
Taking nothing away from the merits of Russ's aforementioned list, I couldn't agree more.
Richard has always been in a league of his own.
Presentation skills, mic use, timing, professionalism, great ears and excellent taste.
Whether he'd want to do more at Allnighters is another thing, but certainly his 'quality approach' has been missed for many years (IMO).
