Sick of the same old same old, here's an hour of quality 'underplayed' and unreleased music from some of the greatest voices in Soul: Lenny Williams, Earl Wright, George Jackson, Johnny Gilliam, Eddie & Ernie, LJ Reynolds, Willie Hutch, Vernon Garrett, Soul Stirrers, Dells and Eddie Parker.
Accent on this one is more on the mid-tempo side, but still a few sweet, deep and low-rider goodies in there to satisfy even the most ardent aficionado.
It only takes an hour, to get a taste of over 40 killer tracks so give it a whirl!
Enjoy!

Yeah great thanks Sean - trust you are too.. I listened to this whilst assembling some Ikea garden furniture - it helped keep me calm when the frustrations started to get too much!!
I consider that a resounding endorsement Robin and will be sure to use it in my future publicity. With your permission, of course

Just read a report on the recent passing of the great Johnny Daye.
His excellent 'What I'll Do For Satisfaction' and 'Stay Baby Stay' are amongst my favourite Stax 45's.
Rest in Peace.

I did notice whilst going through the echoes from 1981 and early 1982 how few venues there was at times.
The 'scene' was on 'life support' Chalky.
Wigan was on its way out.
The Mecca, Cleggy and Samanthas had all gone, along with all those other great venues of the early and mid 70's.
Clifton Hall was the last chance saloon.
And it was incredible.
Number one with a bullet.
I hardly ever missed a nighter, at the time, despite professionally DJing most weekends.
Then working at the Windmill on a Sunday, with a superbly progressive music policy, it seemed logical that I should join the team.
The music was fresh and vibrant and the 'one room for all' approach gave the scene the 'shock treatment' it needed.
60's fans actually found that they could enjoy new and recent music!
It was a good few years after before it all started going backwards again... but it was good while it lasted.
If you want more info (or a bit of my own perspective) let me know and we can try to meet for a coffee... or a pint!
Cheers,

So who remember's the first Queens Hall Niter, yes before Benson's.........................downstairs featured Richard Searling and Mr Just Soul and a host of east coast connected DJ's. Year 82/83? and what a one off it was. Could have been earlier Sean and Awake 502 any recollections.
Nick .
Hi Nick, sorry only just seen this.
It was a great alnighter early days.
I played both upstairs (60's / Northern) and downstairs (Modern) which made it a very long night for me.
Pretty tough shift as I was newlywed at the time and my weekends were stuffed and the pressure was on as the Mrs wasn't really on the 'niter' scene at the time.
Upstairs I would play such diverse and mysterious things as:
Quotations - I Don't Have To Worry – DiVenus
Chosen Few - Birth Of A Playboy - Canyon (Rex Garvin C/U)
Minnie Jones - Shadow Of A Memory - Sugar
Spencer Wiggins - Take Time To Love Your Woman - Sounds Of Memphis
Purple Mundi - Stop Hurting Me Baby – Cat
Tommy Rodgers - I'll Tell It To The Wind – AJP
Jack Montgomery - Dearly Beloved – Scepter
Three Degrees - Lonely Town – Roulette
Rhonda Davis - Can You Remember - Duke (Ann Sexton C/U)
Dynamics - You'll Never Find A Man Like Me - Black Gold
Larry Davis - The Magic Is Gone - Decca (Sunny & The Sunliners C/U)
Jimmy Ellis - Puttin It On Your Mind - Salem (Roscoe Shelron C/U)
Masqueraders - I Aint Gonna Stop - AGP (Mel Britt C/U)
Derek Martin - If You Go - Sue (George Blackwell C/U)
Otis Clay - Show Place - One-Der-Ful (Jimmy Burns C/U)
Cole Bros - Make Yourself Ready - Jamie (Cecil Washington C/U)
Jerry Jackson - It's Rough Out There - Parkway
Don Gardner - We're Gonna Make It Big - Master Five
Some of which never went anywhere, while others bubbled under for years, intertwined with classic sides from Pookie Hudson, Eddie Foster, Carl Carlton etc.
Downstairs was very much a continuation of my Clifton & Cleggy playlist for me (Coke Escovado, Brothers Guiding Light, Ronnie Dyson, Norman Connors, Bobby Patterson, Darrell Banks, Ujima, Lew Kirton, Eddie Billups, Bill Harris, Whispers alongside the ZZ & Co, Cheryl Berdell, Dells, Revelation, Bobby Thurston, Jewel and Rideout etc.) and I think I was getting to the point where I'd had enough, after only a dozen or so.
I eventually gave Steve Croft notice but he pleaded for me to stay on the rosta. As a good mate it was hard for me to say no. We had been a pretty good team.
I went on and did Warrington for him a couple of times, but I'd really had enough, burnt out after continuous weekends away and I finally broke the addiction and managed to quit.
Still, very good times and 'I Wouldn't Change A Thing'

1 hour ago, Original said:Ha ha thank you Ady for confirming the 45 was the first issue, which i always knew but now i have it confirmed. Thats just added a few quid onto the sound
Ady confirmed that the Kent single was the first time the track had appeared on a 45.
The LP was its first vinyl release - therefore the original vinyl release - but as Ady said, nobody would expect you to lug around an LP simply because it was 6 months before.
That'd be ridiculous.
Some of this OVO stuff is a real joke, you know folks.
High time we started talking about musical merit, rather than media and format.
It's a lot more satisfying than stamp collecting!

I played it off this Japanese LP as a 'previously unreleased' track for over 10 years:
https://www.discogs.com/Otis-Clay-The-Beginning-Got-To-Find-A-Way/release/5513775
But it was nice to get my hands on the 45 when it eventually came through.
A stunning record, every bit as good as his 'better known' One-der-ful sides.

I had the immense privelige of playing this superb track for many months, as an exclusive for Kent, a few years ago.
And I still carry it everywhere and play it in every set I can (played it at Soul Essence, Great Yarmouth Weekender, t'other weekend and it went down a bomb at Stoke Allnighter last year too!).
Will make a great 45 but meanwhile DJ's should keep it plugged on whatever legal format you can play it on!
And if that means CD, so be it!
It's all about the music.
Cheers,
Sean

Great music - just can't imagine many of these finding favour on today's northern scene!!
Which is really bizarre when you consider that they were absolutely massive on the Northern Scene of 35 years ago!
Where did it all go wrong?

Haven't heard 'Lady in Red' in a long time - it was MASSIVE, one of those catchy tunes you finally got sick of through overplay (same as 'Prayin') - but hearing it now it sounds brilliant especially that bit when he sings 'Hey Hey Lady' just before the chorus ! and the great rap at the end 'Walking lonely street's at night - it really aint right' 'Smiling at passing cars, hanging round in bars'.
You're right mate. It did go huge!
I found it originally in Lincoln Market for about 10p. When Crofty and I used to sit down and decide what we were going to play that night he wasnt too keen, so I played him the other side (Cup Runneth Over) which he liked even less, so we agreed to go for 'Lady In Red' as the better side!
As usual we'd both play our 'tips' twice each in a night, so by the time the night was over it was a Monster!
Was the first of my tunes to get 'bootlegged' so I guess at that point I knew I had a hit on my hands

Here we go folks with what will almost certainly be the final podcast of this particular 'Early 80's Monsters' series.
Bound to be a few here you've either forgotten... or maybe never knew in the first place!
The last deep dip into the back of the 80's Playbox comprising more 'almost forgotten' and rarely heard records that were very decent floorfillers at Rotherham Clifton Hall, The Rotherham Windmill and Cleethorpes Winter Gardens at the time. Along with a couple of real biggies, here are some of the lesser known sounds of the day.
These were some of the 'edgier' tunes that were played on the early 80's Northern Soul scene... and at the very birth of the Modern Soul scene.
Several are probably due a revival and I'm sure we will see some of these making their way onto playlists in the 21st Century.
I hope that you've enjoyed the series, looking back over 30 years, to the sounds that myself and a handful of others made into Early 80's Allnighter Monsters!
Thanks so much for listening.
