Good info Ady, I used to have a 'Magic' label Boot (yellow) of Jackie Edwards "Feel So Bad" B/W Donnie Elbert "Little Piece Of Leather". Would you say that came from the same source as BJD (A. Patton) and Green Light (Band of Angels / Soul Sisters)? Was it also a "Leicester Boot" Just a thought? Sean Hampsey

1968, my older sister was a bit of a magnet for the local (older) mods. The front drive was like a Scooter park - they were always round our house playing the latest Motown and Stax things. I started finding and buying my own bits, trying to compete with them all. Spent my Saturdays in second hand shops buying everything on Black & Red Atlantic. Soon picked up a pile of UK Motown EP's for 7shillings and sixpence each... and blew them all away! The real influence though was a guy called Jimmy Campbell. I thought he was a God! He went to the Mojo & the Wheel and always came back with the latest tunes. A real smooth guy Jimmy. Sharp Suit, Sheepskin, Royals, the works. One day I was round at his house and he opened up two massive boxes of 45's. He went through each one in turn "You got this?" "nope" it went on the pile. "You got this?" "Yup" it went on another pile. in the end the biggest pile was the stuff I hadn't already got. Guess what, he gave me the big pile. "You appreciate these even more than me" he says. You bet I did! Jimmy helped forge my taste in soul music:- Spellbinders, Roscoe Robinson, Tommy Neal, Impressions, Betty Lavette etc... and I'm eternally grateful. That was about 35 years ago. Hi John, Yes, I've always believed that they were pressed by the President / JayBoy plant. They've got that same 'bomb proof' body armour that came with those early issues, which is why I felt that BJD and Green Light were also connected with Soul Sounds. Runs were certainly limited as I've been tracking the Human Beinz - Tami Lynn & Roscoe Robinson for years so I'd say that these were three of the rarest releases... at least in my experience. I was DJ'ing about 12 years ago and one of the local jocks (an old Wheelite) had all three releases in his playbox. No other Soul Sounds releases... just them! As they were my last three for a full set I acquired his phone number in an effort to procure them from him but when I called... the phone was disconnected! Still lay awake at night thinking about them. If you turned up Human Beinz, Tami Lynn & Roscoe Robinson I certainly wouldn't blast you.. (unless you auctioned them... instead of offering them to me!) Soul Sounds is certainly a part of Northern Soul folklore... and they've brought me hours of pleasure over the years... just looking at them! I've either got or had 'proper' UK Demos and Issues of the Incredibles, Alexander Patton, Bobby Sheen, Mary Love etc but wouldn't sell the Soul Sounds releases at any price! Curiously, the first release, Leon Haywood, is the only one of the series that did not get a legit UK release at the time of issue (or at some point during the 60's). Of course, 'Baby Reconsider' was the first "Big Money" record on the scene so its not hard to figure out why they went with it to launch the label. Sean Hampsey

Hi Darren... give me a clue? My memory's fading me regarding allllll thoooose Laydeeees way back when! Certainly remember The Charade though. Finest venue in the county at one time. I DeeJayed there from circa late 1974 - 1977. Was the last DJ at the 'Old Look Charade' and the first to do 'The New Look Charade'. It didn't look new for long though. Opening night a massive fight broke out and the place (Brick feature walls and all) was torn to pieces! Fantastic music though. Truly 'Across The Board' and although we had the Top allnighter sounds of the day we mixed it with James Brown, War, Isley Bros, Syl Johnson (We Did It), Blue Magic (Look Me Up) Brothers Guiding Light, Dramatics (Choosing Up On You), Invitations (Look On The Good Side), the whole nine yards! The same source also did the Green Light stuff, I believe. The old Rotherham ender Millie Jackson "Ask Me What You Want". I heard Brian Rae finish off with it at an early Clifton Hall and when I took over continued the tradition. Never heard it played out elsewhere since though.
