Another couple of decent Banks Bio links:
https://soulfuldetroit.com/web09-darrell%20...ragic%20end.htm
https://atdetroit.com/040707-AtdetroitNewsR...nksMemorial.htm
All the above, slightly off topic, I know, so apologies.
To answer the original post, I much prefer the DB version.

I present my evidence and a nice little 'Bio' of the great man.
https://www.answers.com/topic/darrell-banks
Quote:
The man considered by many as soul's finest voice was shot dead March 1970 in Detroit by Aaron Bullock, an off duty policeman who was seeing Banks' woman (Marjorie Bozeman). He was waiting when Bullock dropped Bozeman off after work; when Banks grabbed her, Bullock intervened, Banks pulled a gun, and the officer reacted with deadly force ending Banks' four turbulent years as a recording artist/entertainer. Bozeman, a barmaid, allegedly was trying to leave Banks, who was divorced and the father of two kids.
So in summary, they both had pistols and I guess they were both doing the 'knobbing'
Sean
-
Not often I come to the defence of the cops but Darrell had been knobbing the cop's girlfriend, and the cop was off-duty when he shot him.
As I always understood it, the 'Lady' was Darrell's girlfriend and the off-duty cop was the one doing the surreptitious 'knobbing'.
Of course, whoever was actually doing the 'knobbing' does not alter the fact that Banks was a fine artist, cut down in his prime.

I remember a track advertised as by the Tartans about the same time(mid 73 ish) so maybe it was just word association.
John Rhys certainly sounds like a welsh name
John Rhys was the first professor of Welsh at Oxford University.
Whereas, the 'Tartans' were almost certainly from North of the Border.
Slainte!

Lets be honest who would say no to a complete collection of Soul Sound 45's, they were the top sounds of the early northern scene and the labels are great as well.
I wouldn't say no.
Only need three for the full set!
Roscoe Robinson - Tammi Lynn - Human Beinz
All wanted!
Can Anyone help?

Good info Ady,
I used to have a 'Magic' label Boot (yellow) of Jackie Edwards "Feel So Bad" B/W Donnie Elbert "Little Piece Of Leather".
Would you say that came from the same source as BJD (A. Patton) and Green Light (Band of Angels / Soul Sisters)?
Was it also a "Leicester Boot"
Just a thought?

Do you still see the person who is responsible for getting you into the scene?
1968, my older sister was a bit of a magnet for the local (older) mods. The front drive was like a Scooter park - they were always round our house playing the latest Motown and Stax things. I started finding and buying my own bits, trying to compete with them all. Spent my Saturdays in second hand shops buying everything on Black & Red Atlantic. Soon picked up a pile of UK Motown EP's for 7shillings and sixpence each... and blew them all away!
The real influence though was a guy called Jimmy Campbell. I thought he was a God! He went to the Mojo & the Wheel and always came back with the latest tunes. A real smooth guy Jimmy. Sharp Suit, Sheepskin, Royals, the works. One day I was round at his house and he opened up two massive boxes of 45's. He went through each one in turn "You got this?" "nope" it went on the pile. "You got this?" "Yup" it went on another pile. in the end the biggest pile was the stuff I hadn't already got. Guess what, he gave me the big pile. "You appreciate these even more than me" he says. You bet I did!
Jimmy helped forge my taste in soul music:- Spellbinders, Roscoe Robinson, Tommy Neal, Impressions, Betty Lavette etc... and I'm eternally grateful.
That was about 35 years ago. Often wonder what happened to him.

Sean,
I don't have any of the soul sounds releases and don't think I have ever seen one - any chance you could stick one up for me
Hi Kev,
Will certainly, but can't do it until Monday.
I'll probably take a pic, of one of each colour.
These were:
White / Black
Orange / Black
Green / Black
Yellow / Black
Back on Monday!
Cheers

Mentioning no names, but if you check the Jay Boy releases against a SOUL SOUNDS you'll see they were pressed by the same company..
I think Sean's collection of the label is worth much more than people think. I've got a few titles in stock, maybe I'll auction one and see what the market thinks they are worth. Or will I get "blasted" for doing that?
Hi John,
Yes, I've always believed that they were pressed by the President / JayBoy plant. They've got that same 'bomb proof' body armour that came with those early issues, which is why I felt that BJD and Green Light were also connected with Soul Sounds.
Runs were certainly limited as I've been tracking the Human Beinz - Tami Lynn & Roscoe Robinson for years so I'd say that these were three of the rarest releases... at least in my experience.
I was DJ'ing about 12 years ago and one of the local jocks (an old Wheelite) had all three releases in his playbox. No other Soul Sounds releases... just them! As they were my last three for a full set I acquired his phone number in an effort to procure them from him but when I called... the phone was disconnected!
Still lay awake at night thinking about them.
If you turned up Human Beinz, Tami Lynn & Roscoe Robinson I certainly wouldn't blast you.. (unless you auctioned them... instead of offering them to me!)
Soul Sounds is certainly a part of Northern Soul folklore... and they've brought me hours of pleasure over the years... just looking at them!
I've either got or had 'proper' UK Demos and Issues of the Incredibles, Alexander Patton, Bobby Sheen, Mary Love etc but wouldn't sell the Soul Sounds releases at any price!
Curiously, the first release, Leon Haywood, is the only one of the series that did not get a legit UK release at the time of issue (or at some point during the 60's). Of course, 'Baby Reconsider' was the first "Big Money" record on the scene so its not hard to figure out why they went with it to launch the label.

Liz McCambridge, she is / was married to a good friend of yours. her brother was my alibi when I sneaked off to Wigan / Cleethorpes / Sammi's...
Oh to be 14 again....
Gotcha Darren.
Top girl Liz. Married to Neil, my old Stomping partner from the early 70's.
Can't help but smile just thinking about those times.

A friends sister who used to go to the Torch, we used to play her records when she was out, Sam and Kitty, Velours etc. I am sure Mr Hampsey will remember her, and The Charade and Herringthorpe Leisure Centre mid 70's...
Hi Darren... give me a clue?
My memory's fading me regarding allllll thoooose Laydeeees way back when!
Certainly remember The Charade though. Finest venue in the county at one time.
I DeeJayed there from circa late 1974 - 1977. Was the last DJ at the 'Old Look Charade' and the first to do 'The New Look Charade'. It didn't look new for long though. Opening night a massive fight broke out and the place (Brick feature walls and all) was torn to pieces!
Fantastic music though. Truly 'Across The Board' and although we had the Top allnighter sounds of the day we mixed it with James Brown, War, Isley Bros, Syl Johnson (We Did It), Blue Magic (Look Me Up) Brothers Guiding Light, Dramatics (Choosing Up On You), Invitations (Look On The Good Side), the whole nine yards!
Herringthorpe... well that's another story.
Good days mate. Good days.

When does this date from?
Soul sounds were Bootlegged by the notorious Jeff King of Leicester.
I always thought that the BJD titles were also done by King... probably prior to the Soul Sounds things (but I may be mistaken). The same source also did the Green Light stuff, I believe.
There were 30 Soul Sounds bootlegs ... and I've got them all except Human Beinz - Tami Lynn & Roscoe Robinson that have eluded me (Help me out someone!).
Quite a label if you ask me:-
01 LEON HAYWOOD. BABY RECONCIDER.
02 DONALD HEIGHT. TALK OF THE GRAPEVINE.
03 JIMMY HOLIDAY & CLYDIE KING. READY WILLING AND ABLE.
04 SHIRLEY ELLIS. SOUL TIME.
05 HUMAN BEINZ. NOBODY BUT ME.
06 TAMMI LYNN. I'M GONNA RUN AWAY FROM YOU.
07 GENE CHANDLER. THERE WAS A TIME.
08 ROUND ROBIN. KICK THAT LITTLE FOOT SALLY ANN.
09 INVITATIONS. WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME BABY.
10 EARL HARRISON. HUMPHREY STOMP.
11 ALEXANDER PATTON. A LIL' LOVIN SOMETIMES.
12 CHUCK JACKSON. CHAINS OF LOVE.
13 DEAN PARRISH. DETERMINATION.
14 PEACHES AND HERB. WE'RE IN THIS THING TOGETHER.
15 MARY LOVE. YOU TURNED MY BITTER INTO SWEET.
16 BARBARA LEWIS. SOMEDAY WE'RE GONNA LOVE AGAIN.
17 MITCH RYDER & THE DETROIT WHEELS. BREAK OUT.
18 BLENDELLS. DANCE WITH ME.
19 SOUL SISTERS. GOOD TIME TONIGHT.
20 DEAN PARRISH. TELL HER.
21 LITTLE ANTHONY AND THE IMPERIALS. GONNA FIX YOU GOOD.
22 CHUBBY CHECKER. (AT THE) DISCOTEQUE.
23 THE SHARPEES. TIRED OF BEING LONELY.
24 ROSCOE ROBINSON. THAT'S ENOUGH.
25 INCREDIBLES. THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO SAY.
26 HOMER BANKS. HOOKED BY LOVE.
27 MARGIE HENDRIX. RESTLESS.
28 BOBBY SHEEN. DR. LOVE.
29 RONNIE MILSAP. AIN'T NO SOUL (LEFT IN THESE OLD SHOES).
30 DOBIE GRAY. OUT ON THE FLOOR.
A repertoire that any label would envy, dont you agree, were it not for the fact that they were not legit!
However, Mr King got his just desserts and was locked up for the practice.
Curious how these days the BPI appear to be less concerned...
Keith Minshull (allegedly) supplied most of the originals.
Part of our N.Soul History I guess (along with OOTP and... whats that other crowd called that seem to be doing alright at it?)

Bought a few records recently that have been stored in a garage for a few years, most look ok but all have crackles when played. Mild detergent and warm water seems ok but still not 100%, can anyone recomend any of the record cleaning fluids that are about?
BH
Blake,
Whatever you do, don't try VIM.
Kitchen surfaces... Winner.... but it has the opposite effect on vinyl... I find!
Seriously tho'... I've always found that pure, clean, H2O works well with cotton wool.

It took him 12 minutes to read, know the answers, type them up and post to ss.....
...kin ell, it took me longer than that to read the questions...
well done that man....
Many thanks for that!
Hate to be a smart arse ( but I just can't help it) it actually took me less than 5 minutes.
Sign of a mis-spent youth?
Got stumped on the lyrics though... couldn't quite place them. T'old greymatter doesn't function too well after midnight... especially since the girlfriend was shouting me to come to bed at the time

As regards the deep and cheap theme how'bout Roshell Anderson "know what you're doing when you leave" on Sunburst/Contempo. This is a strange and haunting piece of music quite scary.
Regards Alan
Alan,
I'll tell you what's scary.... I was on my way into the office and thought about Roshell Anderson and that I should post it as another recommendation on this thread!!!!
I also thought of "Freddie North "Right Here Is Where We Belong" from around the same time!
The original poster who went for the Roger Hatcher in a big way will surely love these two gems.
Speak soon

Didn't think the Shell release turned up that often, have been looking out for it and only seen a couple in recent times. Has been played lately covered up and think another well known DJ just got hold of one.
Sorry if I've Uncovered it Chalky!
Got a Spanish copy..even rarer than the Shell I reckon!

Yes, I've heard this on many occasions, but by all accounts, they wrote the song together, ...which is why some credit Elbert as the writer.
It cost them their friendship, or so I'm lead to believe. At least that's what I'm told ( but I imagine it was because he was probably knobbing his Mrs!)
