Just read this great thread
Tons of great stuff i agree BUT I cannot believe that one particular Spring US 45 hasn't been mentioned......................and it's currently being played covered up by some wag!
For a bit of fun, gonna try and see if anyone can guess it before i reveal all BUT suffice to say it's a belting strings n things 70's dancer, covered up as (wait for it)...................
Essex IV - You got it.........................
There you go, enough clues, i'll reveal all in the next few days if no one gets it but i'm sure someone will add one and one and get two?????
Cheers
Steve

"Tear It On Down" from the "In The Groove" Album.
Been playing it since I was a Schoolboy and still love it.
A first rate Motown dancer. You can hear the 'ache' in his voice!
Can't fault tho'.....
"Little Darling"
"Wherever I Lay My Hat"
"I'll Be Doggone"
"My Love For You"
"At Last"
"Darling You're Wonderful"
"You're The One"
"Please Stay"
"If I Should Die Tonight"
"Whats Going On"
and the most underrated Marvin track of all.... the MAGNIFICENT..........
"It's Madness"
He just knew it, didn't he.
Listen... and weep.

Dave,
Flip of the Googa Mooga release is "Crying Clown", same as on the Triple B release.
Released in France a couple of months later in 1970.

Always thought he was a no good lying blaggard but not so sure now
Mart...
No you were right all along Martin
To be honest though, my Bootleg collection is pretty impressive!
Only one more number needed now for the entire Soul Sounds series.
C'mon... Ya gotta be impressed!
Doubt if I'll get to play any of them though at the Clifton Reunion.
Always tried to keep my 'collecting fetish' away from my deejaying. And will have to stick to my more modern bits and bobs for the Clifton job.
As for my Soul sounds Bootlegs? Steve just wouldn't understand....
...It's a collectors thing!

Only two releases of this I reckon Dave.
The other is the flip of the AWESOME "But If You Must Go" on Miko.
I wonder if your acetate is the Miko version?
Wouldn't mind geting my hands on the other half!!
Was on Ebay last month from Craig Moerer and made £700.
Nice!

I do remember finding one on UK President at a record fair and leaving it cause the £8.00 asking price was too much. Never seen another copy since.
Hi Alan,
You wont see a President copy for less than a ton these days.
Saw one at Yarmouth earlier this year in a guys box for £120.
Always been one of the 'harder' Presidents.
BTW... Hows married life?
Enjoyed last Saturday night mate... despite the fact that I could only do 45 minutes for you... due to the missus being ill in the car park during my spot.
Not the first person that's happened to though I reckon!

Kinnel Sean, elsewhere in this post I said I had 2 copies of the human beinz and I'd give you one for nothing...
Sorry Pete. You're right... and I replied to the post saying 'yes please'.... but I didn't want to push it! (shrinking violet that I am).
If you've still got it.... please Bill my card (i guess you've still got my details inc address etc) and lets be having the blighter!
Or shall I send you a few bob for postage by PayPal?
Mucho appreciated Pete.
Just need Tammi Lynn then.
A good days work!

Soul Sounds Update --------
Just bagged the Roscoe Robinson 'That's Enough' on Soul Sounds that has eluded me for so many years!
It's a Yellow label and in Bootiful condition!
Only need the Human Beinz & Tammi Lynn 45's to complete the set!
Anyone?

Hi everybody,
Can anybody tell me about;
Sonja Clay - Deeper In My Heart.
What label is it on and release number and is it possible to grab a copy, or is it one of these high price 45s?
Its on 'American Music Makers" label and currently goes for £25 - £30 No more than that!
Sean Hampsey

Was this ever released, either 45 or Lp track?
If so, what on? Where can I get a copy? What's it worth?
Brilliant Track this!
Tragic that it was never released... until the kent CD.
One of Roy Hamilton's top 5 recordings I'd say!

Hard to pick a favourite, Blake.
Awesome repertoire!

I've said it many times before, next to Willie Tee, Gene Chandler had the slickest delivery ever on a good lyric.

FIRST SPUN THE ULTIMATIONS IS THE DARLINGTON /AYCLIFFE AREA IN 1983 ,TO ME IT IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPLETE SIXTIES SOUL RECORDS EVER ,JUST SO VERY GOOD!
BAZ A.
Agree. The Ultimations is the Ultimate!
Also, Highly recommend Otis Clay's 'That's How It Is" (flip of Show Place) and "Tired Of Falling In And Out Of Love" from this logo (infact all O C's tracks are superb on One-derful).
As an aside, There's a wicked version (LP only) by Patti Drew.
As for Lincoln, I spent a lifetime there one year!
Fond memories of the Drill Hall (and a girl called Kim from Birchwood ).

In a similar vein to the Lou Johnson is Winfield Parker "28 Ways She Loves Me".
A real gritty performance from the man.
Definately a sleeper!
Also recommend Luv Co "Things Are Not The Same". Real nice Fingersnapper!
Always loved Millie Jackson's "Ask Me What You Want" - Superb Femme Midtempo!
Joe Simon - "Let Me Be The One Who Loves You" is an old Spring Spin of mine from Clifton Hall - Its a magnificent bouncy thing, similar to Phillip Mitchell's "I'm So Happy"
All Top Tips (IMO)

British Motown Chartbusters, Vol.3 - the one with the silver cover.
Reminds me of when I first saw it as a kid in 1969, and marvelled at the "space-age" design of its time........
DITTO.
Life changing stuff... and just right for a Disco Graphic!

Always wondered , in that magical period from say 1967 to 1972 , was there ever any ACTIVE interaction between the rare soul scene and the ska/skinhead/suedehead scenes?
I'm very curious to know, were there ever any identifiable groups of skinheads (and I don't mean one or two isolated individuals) that would go to the Wheel in Manchester one weekend , and then the next weekend go to a ska do somewhere else in the country ?
And vice versa, were there groups of soulies that would have one foot in each camp ?
I would have said that most of us around that time would have gone to clubs (and Youth clubs) and had both feet in both camps.
When I was a young Mod (then Skinhead, Then Suedehead, Then Mod again) Soul music and Reggae were played and enjoyed (and danced to) side by side.
A typical playlist might include:
Young Gifted And Black
You Can Get It If You Really Want
Wonderful World, Beautiful People
The Ten Commandments
Love Of The Common People
54 46 Was My Number
Skinhead Moon Stomp (+ Must Catch A Train)
Wreck a Pum Pum
You Got Soul
Al Capone
Long Shot Kick De Bucket
Israelites
Big Five
Pinkney Gal
And these would rub shoulders, seamlessly, alongside
Needle In A Haystack
I Got A Feeling
Going To A Happening
Heaven Must Have Sent You
Help Me
I'm Gonna Miss You
Everybody's Going To A Love In
The Cheater
I Got What It Takes
I'll Always Love You etc.
Even those 'Soul Fans / Mods' who understood the distinction would still dance to and collect Reggae alongside Soul.
Most of my mates collected and appreciated both Soul & Reggae in equal parts and I've still got all of the above in my collection from that time. Not 'Reggae Hardcore' I know, but very much a part of my youth.
So as far as ACTIVE interaction between scenes goes, I'd say that (at least up north) they were one and the same.

oh by the way Sean would have Dont take my mind b4 Make me yours.... still, to quote the b side - I will not cry
Agree, Dont Take My Mind is also a good record.... as are...
My Heart Is Closed For The Season - best Capitol track
I'm Living A Lie - best Fame track
I Want Sunday Back Again - best Atlantic track
IMVVVHO
I'm just not keen on the current big 'Money' rave.
Guess I AM the Man who said no!

With my record buying boots firmly back on (been 15 years) I have another request.
Does any have valuation/availability (sadly, I don't have one) of Geater - Breath Taking Girl - House of Orange (1982).
Supposedly not as hard as Where Ever You Are on Sun Belt, but I have never seen one and hopefully I won't be in for a shock.
John
£160 last time I saw it for sale John, but you're right, its rarely ever seen.
"Wherever You Are" is a rarer item, but less indemand, perhaps because its a gorgeous deepie as opposed to a dancer!
Last seen at £75.00 (But I wouldn't part with my copy for that).
Good Luck

WHERE THEY LEAD YOU MUST FOLLOW
Ouch! No need to get personal!
Never been one to follow, me... Chum!
Absolutely no accounting for personal taste is there?
NO

Hey Stevie,
Wasn't really a swipe at Th'Orwell ... or even at 'Cover Ups' for that matter.
Just a bit of fun... as you said.
Always been a little bit partial to 'the mystery of it all'. Especially me being a Quiz Meister an all that!
Infact, still got my old 'Cecil Washington' track from Clifton Hall covered up after all these 23 years... and nobody got near it!
Might even give it a spin on Saturday at the Clifton Hall Revival!.........
...............Daren't play it at Yarmouth though
Cheers for now Babes
