Long before he got involved with the 'Mirwood' recordings, Simon was the mastermind behind SCORES of early boots which came into the UK in the early 70's and were shipped out through SELECTADISC in Nottingham.
I've still got several of his early lists with some mouthwatering stuff on there.
He had strong connections Stateside and was able to locate originals and pirate quantities in 'counterfeit style' - to replicate the original labels.
Of course, prior to Simon, Boots were output on anything but 'repro' labels on the UK Soul scene, but at least with 'Soul Sounds / BJD / Green Light etc people at least knew what they were buying.
30+ years on, many an eBayer has made a killing from a Simon lookalike repro!

Big fan of all of the above.
Always loved Jackie.
Worth a mention though, as a 'Bubbling Crossover' track, is the blinding "What A Lovely Way" from 1972....... and (although not a 'Northern' track) on a Jackie Wilson thread I've just got to plug "Just As Soon As The Feeling Is Over" as its one of the top 10 records ever made by any artist... ever! (even wups Margie Joseph & the Sam Dees 'original' (previously unreleased) version.
Simply outstanding!

The track featured on the "Ruffin & Kendricks" RCA LP from c.1987 and I also have it on a nice Black RCA 45.
Was a real breath of fresh air 'throwback' track for old Motown fiends (such as myself) and I think it can be picked up pretty inexpensively.
I reckon I've a spare LP in the Basement, if desperate!
Cracking bit of footage.
Thanks

Hang Fire Russ... Just about to post your CD!
Will your mail be forwarded or do you want to PM the new one to me?
As for addresses... Would certainly give Richy Rosy a WIDE birth.
The Guy's well overpriced and a prize asshole... especially if you spend any less than $500 with him.
One time he even tried to get 'across' my girlfriend while I was in the downstairs record room (mind you, so does Tats Taylor whenever he meets her) so don't take the Mrs if you do go there.
Mind you, I did some pretty good trades on the old girl!
Hope you strike gold out west matey!

Got a huge list Blake.
Almost every 45 sleeve in my playbox has a +2 or -2 / - 3 symbol on the top right hand side.
Same goes for the inner sleeves of my album tracks.
Certain tunes just dont work otherwise on todays dancefloor and its a shame to leave them off the playlist IMO.
Even tweaked Marvell Love last night by -5 !!!
Have had scores of records through my hands over the years that, back in the old 'Black Box' Deck days, I would have loved to have been able to jack up or down a bit.
Now we have the technology... and if you've got the 'ear' for it, it works really well.
Yes sir. I'm a tweaker alright!

Brilliant!
One of my favourite 'Melt' albums.
Up there with Lou Courtney, JR Bailey, Bobby Wilson etc and will be deemed a classic LP in years to come.
Check out the clip of 'Can't Get Over You' also from this incredible album.
Thanks.

Don McLeans' Castles In The Air...
Now that IS a good record!
... but aside from that, I saw Stevie around 71 at the Fiesta in Sheffield and the audience were literally baying for "Castles in The Sand" ... but he still didn't sing it.
Lovely tune!

The Label is MARSEL, details are MSL 501 Tell It Like It Is/Live Your Life
Really he wants to know was this ever issued?
Thanking you all.....
I believe it was issued in 1976... but I dont think I've got a copy, so can't be positive.

I have always assumed that the term originated at the time Levine and Curtis started playing new releases and therefore the term 'modern soul' was used to distinguish it from the older, more traditional 'Northern' sounds.
A serious question deserves a serious answer.
I personally dont associate the term 'modern soul' with the Levine / Curtis transition to 'newer' material at all.
Infact, I don't even recall hearing the expression until the very late 70's / early 80's... I'd refute the notion that it was used, to describe the genre, during the mid 70's (at the time of the Mecca - Scene split).
I think you could date the term (as used on the Northern scene) to no earlier than 1979 (or even 1980) and it would have referred to the sounds being played at such places as Snaith by Soul Sam, Arthur Fenn, Mario, and then by the Clifton Hall jocks in 1981 and thereafter.
These early 'modern soul' tracks would have included
ZZ & Co "Getting Ready For The Get Down"
O T Sykes "Stone Crush"
King Tutt "You Got Me Hung Up"
High Frquency "Summertime"
Rideout "Someone Special"
I well recall the UK's first 'Modern Soul' Allnighter being held in Rotherham Tiffanys in 80/81... not before that... and how the South Yorkshire region was the real Birthplace (or at least the initial hotbed) for the Modern Soul 'scene' with Clifton Hall, Turnups, Sheffield Tiffanys etc.
The term hardly existed outside of the region until 82 onwards, when 'After Dark' promotions (Steve Croft and the modern jocks from Clifton Hall ) moved to Cleethorpes Winter Gardens and Bradford Queens Hall. Rock City and Loughborough soon followed.
The Mecca may have played a lot of 'Modern Soul' (in comparison to the 60's stuff played elsewhere) but I honestly dont recall the phrase being used at that time.

Quick plug: Relive those early Modern Sounds at the Clifton Hall Reunion... tomorrow... in Rotherham!
Only 24 hours to go.

BEEN ASKED THIS A FEW TIMES OVER THE YEARS.IS THERE A LEGIT VOCAL.
IF SO ,HAS ANYONE GOT AN MP3 OR SOUND-BITE.
CHEERS @97
The Rumour that I recall from about 25 years ago was that it was by Tony Talent and was 'suppposed' to have been a Musicor planned release!!
I remember someone telling me that they'd heard it and that the lyrics were 'supposed' to have been about a guy in a prison cell... measuring 6' x 6'.
I guess the rumours been superseded by the John Pugh record though, but that was the old, old story.
Never heard it myself, but always found the instrumental incredibly exciting and, as a rule, I can't be arsed with instrumentals at all.

Hi Pete,
I'd go along with those that suggest a deposit be charged to hold the record.
You offer a Professional service. Customers should be prepared, at least, to pay a deposit if they are unable to commit outright to the purchase (for whatever the reason).
You're simply asking them to put their money where their mouth is.
If you dont operate such a system, people will take advantage... and you'll end up with an ulcer!.
Look on it like running a Hotel.
If you saved a room and didn't take a deposit, while turning others away because guy number one made a 'reservation' you'd simply go bust... if he didn't show!
Deposit = Reservation. Otherwise it's on the market to the next person who wants it.
Thats good business!
On the other side of the coin Pete, you are the best dealer I've had the pleasure of doing business with in years - but I wont say why on here.
You deliver the goods mate. You dont deserve the grief.
Implement a deposit scheme asap. Good advice.

Hi There,
I have both the vinyl LP and the CD.
There are two additional 'Bonus Tracks on the CD that were not on the Vinyl LP.
These are "He Didn't Know" and "Let The Good Times Roll".
The vinyl LP is a straight 11 tracker!
One of the greatest sets ever I reckon!
The vinyl LP turns up on Ebay as regular as clockwork and the last couple have gone for Bargain Basement prices. (Last one was £20 and it was always a £70 LP in my book)

Hey, its the thought that counts!
I meant "What A Lovely Way" which is the flipside to "You Left The Fire Burning"... on Brunswick 55480 from 1972....which suggests, as everybody knows, that I'm a Johnny F***ing Know All Soulboy.
Lovely record... IMO.
