I was out with one of my '40 something' Sales Reps, a few months ago, and he had the Wellers "Studio 150" album on in the Motor.

I couldn't believe the tracklisting.

"If I Could Only Be Sure"

"The Bottle"

"Hercules"

"Dont Make Promises" and others.

He was all in a lather abour the 'Soulfulness' of Wellers 'Performance' ... so I did the poor lad a favour with a CD of the original versions - by NF Porter, Gil Scott Heron, Aaron Neville, ZZ Hill etc.

He hasn't looked back since.

I guess if artists such as PW want to 'pay tribute' to Soul Music by covering Soul classics, then it can sometimes open doors to 'the real deal' for many music lovers. It's just such a p**sser when the inferior cover gets the plaudits (...and the green).

Were the Jam poor?... I don't think so... Probably made a bl**dy fortune!

Actually this might be a good opportunity to ask a question. i've been doing a column in 'manifesto' for about two years and it features 45 and 12"s that were either not issued in America or were first issued outside of America in those formats. It's been quite a long list so far but one I've been reluctant to include is Leon Bryant 'Just The way You Like It' on Delite UK 12". I've never seen an issue of it and can't find any evidence of a US 12" or 7". Anyone have either a full UK issue or a US issue?

I have both a US !2" and a UK 7" of "Just The Way You Like It".

I often played the 45 around the time that "Mighty Body" was being played (also have a US 45 of that one - but much prefer JTWILI).

I will dance to oldies, but there's a lot of oldies northern i wont play anymore, i like to hear different sounds wether it be 'rare or 'modern'.

As so many new spins eventually feed into the 'Oldies' circuit, I suppose another question would be... Are 'Modern' Fans Living In The Future?
