  1. val was a doo wop collector, before his obsession overtook him,but as per previous quote dont bother going ,the man knows his stuff,he grew up with the guy's that made the philly sound

Sure does know his stuff. He was trading rare 45's before most of us were out of short pants. And to be honest, he makes a fair point about how many (Brit) collectors go about tearing through Store stocks, looking for the big ones!

I've been in a few places where English guys aren't made too welcome because other UK collectors have sullied the patch (That's normally when I play my "Irish" card - works for me!).

Don't get me wrong, like most collectors I know the euphoria of facing a mountain of old US 45's only too well... but folks have got to show some respect to the store owner by not just showing up and trashing the joint!

Dealers these days are very well aware of the 'potential' value of their store stock and are entitled to get pissed off when a treasure hunter turns up with his pit boots and shovel... no matter what time of day it is.

  2. OK .... first get this in context....

It nearly 3.00am and I've sunk a half bottle of whiskey. Just playing a couple of tunes that I've previously downloaded from various resources and this one stops me in me tracks.

It says Buddy Causey on the clip... but I'm buggered if I know anything else about it.

Luvverly record I reckon... but Who is it? What is it? What label is it on and can I buy one?

I think its called "Theres A Way" anyone confirm?

Just love it.....(at least after a bottle of scotch....sounds real good to me)

    Anyone?

    Sean

  3. Who bought it all then?

Sorry...... I was 'Winking' and my tongue was firmly in my cheek..... if you get my drift!

He's got over 4 million 45's in stock. Been open since the very early 70's.

I first heard of him in Tony Cummings 'Philadelphia Soul' book circa 1974 and fantasized about clearing him out ever since.

    Here's his website:-

All you US fellas have a good time there won't you!

You'll have the place to yourselves.

We don't need to go of course.... because as the man said..."all the records are in the UK"

    :D

    Sean

PS: Anybody want to buy a Temptones?

  4. Cheers Sean

Is the LP called Wounded Woman ?

By the way are you the Sean that Manion talks about, say's he a big pal of yours !

Only I thought he did'nt have any pals !:yes::D

    Ray

    Yes Ray,

The LP is called "Wounded Woman" and yes, Steve's claim to fame is that he knows me personally and has even DJ'd on the same bill as me a number of times.

    :(

Joking apart, he's a top lad the Mannion and one of only a handful of people that I've allowed into my Basement.... What he wont have told you is that I plucked him out of the obscurity of a Sheffield pub, in a drunken stupor, and re-introduced him to Soul Music.

He's never been the same since.

    Sean

  5. sean..

thank god somebody's mentioned the wounded woman lp..

as you know there's not a bad track on it..

for those that dont know it it was recorded in 1975 but not released until 1989..

    bless

    the messiah of northern soul

    Agree JC.

One of the most ESSENTIAL femme Soul albums... ranking alongside...

    Doris Duke "I'm A Loser"

    Shirley Brown "Woman To Woman"

Millie Jackson "Caught Up" "Still Caught Up"

Denise LaSalle "Trapped By A Thing Called Love"

    Sandra Philips "Too Many People"

    Linda Jones "Hypnotised" etc.

  6. Me to Buddy I think its a brilliant record that needs to get played !

Heard it first at Soul in the Sun - Tenerife a few years back and since then I've loved it !

Put the question on here re: value because you never see it for sale !

    Regards

    Ray

Used to see loads about for £10-£15 on Truth 45 (10 or so years ago).. but you're right... probably not the rarest thing on the planet, just that they're all sat in collections!

A Great 45.... but the LP is even better value.

Came from the same source as all the other counterfeits these pages keep discussing. "Manifesto" etc Same pressing plant (New York) pressed by the same counterfeiter (New York) for the same USA customer, who set it all up,for the same dealer (UK)

Mmmmm.... I Wonder who you can mean John

    You're bang on (as per...).

  8. Multiply Eloise Laws "1,000 Laughs" by Gene McDaniels "100 Pounds Of Clay" X Sam Dees "One In A Million You" + "60 Minutes Of Your Love" by Homer Banks and I reckon that's a pretty big number.

Carol Vorderman.... where are you when I need you?

    Sean

  9. Just wanted to see peoples reaction- Dont think Ill play it out at pitch 4 then- Just listen to it at home!

A nice Finale... but if I were you I would play it at Home... and Away!

    (footie related joke)

Never had anyone object to tweaked / pitched tracks I've played in my my sets. In my experience, the dancefloor is what DJ's should be most interested in and if a good tune gets excluded for the sake of a few RPM's that's just a crying shame.

Right then, I'm off to delight the dancefloor at The Red Lion - Sheffield - this evening...

...and I'll be tweaking all night long!

    Just try stopping me!

    Have a good weekend!

    Sean

  10. Can't fault you!

Especially if you get to play such sublime tracks as Lorraine Johnson as a result! (even though I did play it out years ago as a straight 45 rpm).

Nowadays, almost every 45 in my playbox has a + 2 or 3 or a - 2 or 3 against it (marked on the sleeve).

Bummer though when you get to a gig with Prehistoric decks and you've got to play 'em straight!

Steve Plumb raised this question a couple of months ago on here. Most replies were pretty positive as I recall.

I've had scores of records through my hands over the years that only needed a bit of a tweak to make them playable.

And yes... as a fellow poster mentioned earlier... every time I've followed Soul Sam on the decks he's pitched up +3 or more.

Fellas, we've got the technology (much like CD capability... though that's a whole different subject) so IMO we should most definately use it.

    Sean
