Sorry Nev, Sold my spare UK Buddah copy to Steve Mannion. But this should help... Its also on the "Loves Happening" US Curtom LP (CRS 8002) from 1969. I've got one of those too, but the cover is very different to the UK copy so I'm hanging onto it. The LP also features the immaculate "Baby, Make Me Feel So Good". Should be easier to track down than a clean UK copy. Sean

Yes Mike, I do have loads of unusual overseas 45's. Might start a thread on the subject at some point. Got a bit of a weakness for Ozzie releases, having first picked up a quantity some years ago whilst in Sydney & Melbourne on business. Also got quite a few Israeli, Lebanese and European label Soul 45's, but the Greek Frankie Beverley has, so far, evaded me. Guess the "Cry To Me" got released on RCA on the strength / success of "After All". Same label design and around the same period. Sean

Close Paul. The track was recorded by Major Lance and the Impressions (being a Curtis Mayfield composition) both real nice Chicago Soul cuts but the Stairsteps version, having been recorded much later is a much smoother 'Crossover' track which, as Steve said above, I've been playing out since the early 80's (Clifton Hall, Cleethorpes, Bradford etc.). More recently, I've included it in my sets at Soul Essence once or twice over the years and it always goes down well, but until this thread I've never seen it get a mention. For me its one of the finest Soulful Dance tracks ever! Simply Gorgeous! And thanks for the name check Steve. As you know, I've been plugging this baby for decades... and I'm pretty sure you'll be playing it too! Now we only need another 2 or 3 'Soul DJ's' to pick up on it and we could have a Monster on our hands! Sean

A Beautiful Slice of Sam Dees... As well as the LP it also came out on 45 on US Aware, and also on UK RCA (which is nice!) but this copy is the most desirable for collectors! Sean

Sorry Tony, but I always believed that the lovely Conny signed with Motown in 1960, age 15 (She was born 28 September 1945). Berry Gordy 'discovered' her at a 'Miss Teen Night' and he 'signed' his first White Female artist immediately after, in 1960. Its certainly incorrect to say that she didn't get to Motown until 1963. You're right though, Debbie Dean WAS the first white female artist to actually RECORD for Motown. I jumped the gun and read the question as first artist at Motown.... and I've always believed it to be common knowledge that Conny was the first! Either way, I know who'd I'd have wanted to have first! Sean

In my opinion, Derek, it was always the much better side. It's called "Its Not Right" and is on the flip of both the US Tower copy and the UK Capitol 45. A great deepie. Now somebody please put the clip up for Derek. Sean

Surprised the old Ann Perry C/Up's not been mentioned. Covered as Ann Perry, the Mecca played a 33rpm 7" at 45rpm (entitled "Let The Dollar Circulate") by Billy Paul on Philly International. Also, Moses Smith (actually Epitome of Sound) "You Don't Love Me" was speeded up (and wrongly credited) on the 45 pressing... and some 5,000 people bought it! So since this practice has been going on for 30+ years, why's everyone so shocked? - especially now (in the 21st Century) the technology is on your desktop? Not saying I approve, but sometimes I think there's a real luddite mentality to all this stuff. Pete Smith has the right approach. It's good for a giggle. No more. And I cerainly agree that the guy (whoever he is) should not 'profit' from his experimentation, through blatant deception. So, what shall we do with this fellow? Hi Blake, I reckon it will be the same version / same record, since Melvin Davis was 'with' 8th Day. 8th Day were a 'phoney' group in that they had records out under the name before a group was actually assembled (such tracks as "She's Not Just another Woman" were actually by 100 proof with Steve Mancha). Seems to me that this is just a 'mis-badged' sequel compilation. "You Got To Crawl Before You Walk" by 8th Day WAS Melvin Davis also. The other 8th day 45's were also not by 8th day! So, if you did get to hear the 8th Day 'version', I reckon it would be note for note Melvin Davis. Sean
