  1. Yes Roger, but you're not the only one. All my mates (both of them) think I'm awesome too! It's been a while since you were down there, though from memory. I reckon you're well due a return. Hope to see you there next year. Sean
  2. I reckon you've both got cloth ears Roger! Sean
  3. Sheeeeeeeeeeet! This thing gathered pace didn't it! Been away at a Conference (hic!) since Friday and just got back! Pm'ing you my addy now Chris! Cheers all. Can't wait to get all the CD's. It's like a Soulful Pyramid Selling Chain Letter Thingy. Innit? Sean
  4. Count me in Chris! PM me your address and I'll send you my LP only compilation of 60's & 70's Soul! Meanwhile... sincere apologies to the 2-3 people I promised to send a CD to this year. I am one slack so & so and they've been in my car CD system all Summer... but now it feels like Winter outside... time for a change... so I'll pop 'em in the post. Sean
  5. Might be splitting hairs but I don't think its actually a misprint Tone, as the original Baba Brooks & The Dingle Brothers on Gay Feet (Flip to "This Is Thunder" ) uses the same spelling. I doubt if two typesetters got it wrong. I reckon this spelling is deliberately ironic rather than an actual typo. Sean
  6. I've had for years a US Atlantic copy of Otis Redding's immortal ballad "That's How Strange My Love Is". Never seen another one. Strange huh? (or should that be strong?) Sean
  7. It's a familiar Rotherham Expression. Normally used in the Saturday afternoon session to recount the previous Friday night down town, following a physical encounter with the doorman. The phrase is usually preceeded by "He wouldn't let me in so I gave the ...... ....." Sean
  8. Yes Neil, there was one in every sales box then. Remember hammering it at Clifton Hall and the KGB.... early 80's. Thought you'd have still got one Steve! About time you listened to some new stuff I reckon. Give us a bell! Sean
  9. Hi Mark, I think Seven Seas was LP Only. Instrumental version of the Isley Bros hit. Came out on Glades USA and JayBoy over here. A Big Cleethorpes spin way back when! Must be got for a Tenner I reckon. Sean
  10. Loved Dusty to bits, burt there's really no comparison. If you'd compared her to Baby Washington, Jean Wells or an Irma Thomas I might have understood the question (though the results would not necessarily favour Dusty). Smokey was one of the worlds first 'true' Soul singers and he's delivered the Soul goods for well over 30 years. His "Who's Gonna Take The Blame" turned me onto the deeper side of Soul and some 36 years later I still use that record as a benchmark for pure class, because of its sheer, wistful, beauty. As Steve said "The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage" is pure artistry. Also, who can failed to be moved by "Ooh Baby Baby". Sorry, but Smokey is the most Soulful of the two by a country mile, but I'm with you all the way on the Womack reference. Bobby W is very much in a class of his own. Sean Hampsey
  11. Sounds like Mike James Kirkland on Bryan to me! Sean Hampsey
  12. A handful of 'Inspirational' Soul Tunes off the top of my head that could be played at any 'proper' soul night! Little Anthony "Love Was Born For Me" Henry Jackson "What's The Matter" Eddie Holman "Thanks For Saving Me" Winans "If Ever I Fall" Brooklyn Allstars "I'm Coming Home! Mighty Clouds Of Joy "I'm Ready" Praise the lord! Sean
  13. Spot on Simon. Always loved it (tho' many didn't). Super little choon! Sean
  14. --> QUOTE(C.B @ Oct 22 2006, 01:23 PM) link By all means - it's a quality 60s soul record and all. But is it really THAT good? Any opinions? Am I the only one who think that it ain't really that special? More like a "cult" record for collectors perhaps Just curious what you all think. I can think of dozens that applies to. Not sure it applies to DG though! Top drawer Soulful, Uptempo Choon that most 60's Soul fans would want to own... even if there were a cartload of 'em! Sean Hampsey
  15. Still need this one folks! Nobody got one? How rare can it be? C'mon... sell me yours and make an old man very happy. Sean
  16. As an aside, the Atco and Buddah 45's are different mixes with the Buddah backing track being updated over the original vocal. Both nice versions. I also have "Yes My Goodness" by Willie Hobbs on Silver Fox but there's no 45 from Jerry Butler under this title on the Mercury Catalogue that I'm aware of.
  17. What effect does this have on you Kirsty? Just in case you missed it on the Stairsteps Post earlier / elsewhere. Quality Midtempo if ever... Sean
  18. Dear CraigW, Is that you on your Avatar? If so, I get to Wolverhampton quite often. Perhaps we could discuss Dena Barnes and a few other things over a coffee? Let me know. TTFN Sean
  19. Thanks Blake. Keep on plugging the quality Mate! Sean
  20. OK. Andy Whitmore just emailed me. He's also got a copy... on the Gule label... and he tells me he only recently heard of it coming out on Candy Stix... So... it just goes to show... what's obvious to one is a mystery to another (and vice versa). But I still aint seen one! Sean
  21. Eyup alan, You're right mate. The numbers are way apart, having checked. And yes, the flip "So Can I" is another goodie. Sam's "After All" did sell quite well though and found its way onto a couple of 'Pop' compilations having garnered extensive radio play. Anybody else got a UK RCA CD copy of "After All"? I picked two up when new but its apparantley pretty scarce. Sean
  22. Must say I agree with you, as the label was small enough without a local issue. That said, I keep finding (or hearing of more and more obscure local issues all the time). Never seen or heard of one, that's for sure. These are the only label differences that I'm aware of. Sean
  23. Another thought! Any fans of Jesse James "Are You Gonna Leave Me" will love this track as its a dead ringer in so many ways! Now if it was a scarce 45 on a hideously obscure label ... what price the 5 Stairsteps? Trust me. This is well worth looking out for. Sean
