Hi Pete, Yes, I used to play it often at Bradford Queens Hall, early eighties. I've put it on almost every 'Northern' Tape & CD I've done in the past 20+years... and have just included it on Chris Andertons LP Track CD swap. I was surprised at the plaudits that the unreleased Motown versions created a few years ago as I think this version is the Ba**ocks! It is an LP only track and should only escalate in value - currently around £30 in good nick. Particularly love the album title track 'Maybe'. Sean Hampsey

Sure was a great night. Me, Kev Briscoe & John Benson used to make a regular pilgrimage across the Pennines from Rotherham. Rain, Snow and Hail... and a very late drive back home. Musically it always hit the spot for me. Shame its no more. But fond memories certainly. Sean Hampsey

Don't think so Jock. Not seen Mike or Pete at a Modern gig for years. It was 'Dance' they got into. I was shocked at the time. Known Pete since the 70's and always thought he had good taste. Known Mike since the very early 80's and always thought the same. But they got into 'Dance' I tell ya. Bloody 'Dance'. Mike even laughed at me once for dancing to Maxine Brown's "Don't Leave Me Baby". Told me I couldn't dance... to 'that bloody thing'. Still don't know if he was on about the record... or my dancing. Definately one of the best Soul Albums of 1979 was "Raw Silk". Almost wore out my first copy within 12 months. The highlights "Where There Was Darkness" "I Hope You'll Be Very Unhappy Without Me" "Nobody" and a cool rendition of Marvin's "Just To Keep You Satisfied" were amongst the best album tracks of the decade. She went well off the boil though (IMO) with some of her later stuff (Almaz... what was that all about?) but for lovers of SOUL Music "Raw Silk" is an awesome album. Has your girlfriend got that? If not, buy it for her and I'm sure you'll experience mutual satisfaction. Sean

Agree totally... except on the Northern Soul Scene, where, although they've had scores of records played over the years (from Imperial, Neptune, Phil Int etc) I've never met anyone on the scene who cited them as their fave group. Ask around. You'll always get the usual suspects Tempests, Metro's, Hesitations, Dells, Temps, Tops etc. All well and good but I honestly feel that the O'Jays have never had the recognition deserved (on the Northern scene). So good to see that there are others on here who rate their contribution so highly. Sean

Without wishing to sound like Andy Pipkin... Yeh... I Know! Gerald was only a twinkle when his Dad was 'already' making great records and grew up to have a tremendous career of his own. I guess that's what makes Gerald's departure even sadder. I imagine there can be few things worse than your kids going before you. Hence this thread (and the other GL thread) as an appreciation. Fond memories of Mike. A real smoothie. Set me up with loads of good tunes in the early 80's that I used at Clifton Hall, Cleethorpes, Bradford etc. He came to the early Soul Essence gigs, along with with Adam, a couple of times but not seen him for nearly 10 years. I had heard that he and Pete Shirley (another old mucka from that period) had left the Soul scene and got involved in the 'Dance' circuit (whatever that is). A top lad! Sean Hampsey

Recent posts on The Dells etc. had me thinking for a week or so about starting this thread. And then with the sad news of Geral Levert's premature departure I felt it was somehow appropriate to start the ball rolling. For me, The O'Jays have been one of the most important Soul Groups of the past 4-5 decades. Favourite dancers include... "I Dig Your Act" "Hold On" "No Time For You" "Lipstick Traces" "I'll Never Forget You" "Just To Be With You" "Just Another Guy" "I Love Music" "Looky Looky" "It's Too Strong" "Be My Girl" "Branded Bad" "Time To Get Down" "992 Arguments" "Extraordinary Girl" "Use Ta Be My Girl" "People Keep Telling Me" "Summer Fling" "Another Lonely Night" But Eddie and the boys also excelled on the ballads. "Stairway To Heaven" "Now He's Home" "Brandy" etc. A 40+ year repertoire and the guys are still cutting it today with 3 new albums in the past few years. Here's your chance to Stand Up and be counted O'Jays fans. What's your favourite from the guys? (It might be one of the above... or something else!). Sean Hampsey

Shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of one of the greatest Soul voices in recent years. I was only playing his "I'm Still" last night. One of my favourite 80's Soul tracks. Hadn't played it for over a year. Unbelievable. His "Need Of Love Street" is also a truly awesome ballad. Condolences to his family, four children and friends. R.I.P. Sean Hampsey

Best Cheap Box on the planet. Once did an entire spot from it at Soul Essence.... and it was hailed as "probably my best spot ever" by those in the know. Might take an early trip to the tower, just to try and get me hands on it before the rest of you! Poser Man
