New Diggin Deep 45 - Exceptions & Milton Bennett - Feb 14th Release
Sean Hampsey posted an article in News Archives
Latest news from Diggin' Deep Records, read and listen below... ANNOUNCING DIGGIN’ DEEP RECORDS NEWEST 45! A VALENTINE’S SPECIAL! PRE ORDER NOW FOR 14th FEB 2020 Can You Dig It? DD 0010A The Exceptions ‘So Much in Love’ DD 0010B Milton Bennett ‘I’m Ready’ It is with great pleasure that we announce the latest Diggin’ Deep 45 which will be available for you to pre-order before the Valentine’s Day Release Date. Both these tracks are from the GWP production team out of New York, which started in 1969 by Jerry Purcell. These sides are up there with anything the GWP label put out on vinyl during its three-year tenure: THE EXCEPTIONS - SO MUCH IN LOVE (Bennie Gordon, Chuck Dean) The Exceptions were a group that Benny Gordon brought to GWP Records. Not related to others of the same name, this unknown group can certainly sing and they deliver a stunning performance here on a song which Benny co-wrote and recorded himself on his own Estill Records. It is an easy-going group soul number that has been well received by the Low Rider and Sweet Soul community of South Los Angeles, via advance copies in the hands of Ruben Molina and Arlene Sepulveda (Soulera 5150). It’s a beautifully crafted love song timed for release on Valentines day 2020. MILTON BENNETT – I’M READY (Unknown) Though he is best remembered for his song writing, including seminal works such as ‘Go Now’, ‘Showdown’ and Kenny Carter’s ‘Don’t Go’, Milton Bennett was also a very good singer. Northern Soul fans will be very familiar with his ‘What’s One More Lie’ and here we have another traditional ‘old school’ uptempo dancer that could do some serious damage on that scene. Quite why this fabulous record remained in-the-can is a mystery, but here it is now, some 50 years since its recording. Please take a few minutes to listen to the promotional video. We hope you’ll agree, this great double-header is a 45 that every Soul fan will want to have in their collection. Both sides are now available on a beautifully mastered 45. DD0010 collector’s release is a limited pressing @ just £12 each plus postage and packing. Avoid Disappointment. Pre-order ON WEBSITE ONLY now, while stocks last https://www.diggin-deep.com -

Ike Perry & The Lyrics- Don't Turn Around/I'm Just a Man
Sean Hampsey replied to Mal C's topic in Look At Your Box
Correct John. It is, as you say, completely different. I was suspicious of the first one. The tapes having been around for 30 years. And now the appearance of this other one, looking a bit random in comparison. Sean -

Hi Mal, did you see this came up again recently and sold for £1468 last night? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383295239797 I had the uptempo track on tape in the early/mid 80's. The 'Don't Turn around' track was listed as 'Keep On Walking' back then. Sean -

Harolyn Montgomery......info please
Sean Hampsey replied to Blackpoolsoul's topic in Look At Your Box
Always believed it’s a typo. Should be Carolyn. But turns out Harolyn is a Christian name, as unfamiliar as it may sound. Always loved this 45 and always just saw it as a bad typo. But now I’m not so sure. -
KAREN SMALL (Venus) + Joe Bataan (EPIC)
Sean Hampsey replied to Toodarnsoulful's topic in Record Wants
You may already know mate, but just in case, most Karen Small Venus copies are mispresses and don't play the track. Best bet is the UK Vocalion press which is always correct Cheers, Sean -

ANNOUNCING DIGGIN’ DEEP RECORDS NEWEST RELEASE! TWO SUPERB SLICES OF GROUP SOUL! THE NEWEST ‘DIGGIN’ DEEP’ LIMITED EDITION 45 RELEASE DATE FRIDAY 4th OCTOBER 2019 AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER FROM 23rd SEPTEMBER 2019! Can You Dig It? DD 008A - The Radiations “That’s The Way (Our Love Is)” DD 008B - The Lovers “When You’re Poor” It is with great pleasure that we announce the latest Diggin’ Deep 45. A pair of excellent group Soul tracks, available to pre order on 23rd September 2019. The top side, ‘That’s The Way (Our Love Is)’ is a blistering, midtempo, number from The Radiations, a New York based vocal group, famed for their much loved 1969 outing on Valise ‘Love Be Not a Stranger’. This previously unissued record has been very well received by lovers of group and ‘crossover’ soul whenever it’s been played out. It’s bound to be a winner in discerning soul circles. The Radiations were one of a stable of artists that New York producer David Blake worked with which included the Quotations, Frank Dell, The Headliners, Jackie Owens and Johnny Watson on Valise. They were all based around New York and this fine midtempo treasure is an example of soul group singing at its best. The flipside ‘When You’re Poor’ from The Lovers is another ‘previously unreleased on vinyl’ number, written and arranged by Arthur Wright. Following its discovery and inclusion in the bestselling compilation ‘This Is Lowrider Soul’ last year, the track has become hugely appreciated across the USA, Europe and beyond by lovers of sweet and group soul music. The Lovers were stationed at the Deal Air Force base in northern California and had releases on Vardan as The Emotions and Philips as The Lovers, and later on Minit, Boola-Boola and Fantasy recording as the Pacesetters. This Diggin’ Deep 45 is the first vinyl release from the group in over 40 years. Take a listen to a minute of each side on the video: Both tracks are now available on a beautifully mastered vinyl 45. THE NEWEST ‘DIGGIN’ DEEP’ LIMITED EDITION 45 Two superb sides dedicated to the memory of our old friend Dave Godin. Showcasing the talents of two artist’s he championed: Joan Bates (AKA Jaibi) AND Larry Banks! Can You Dig It? DD 007A Jaibi ‘It Was Like A Nightmare’ DD 007B Lawrence & Jaibi ‘You Make Me Feel Good ’ This is the latest Diggin’ Deep 45, available to pre order on what would have been Dave’s 83rd birthday. It is no exaggeration to say that Dave was one of the most influential, if somewhat controversial, figures on the UK Soul scene. He will mainly be remembered for promoting Tamla Motown in this country and coining the terms ‘Northern’ and ‘Deep’ Soul. No mean feat! His contribution to ‘Soul Journalism’ was exceptional and his ability to unearth or exposure underrated talent was legendary. Both Joan Bates and Larry Banks were artists very dear to Dave. It’s no exaggeration to say that their musical legacy would be ‘lost’ to many of us if it wasn’t for him. Both these tracks are from the GWP production team out of New York which included Larry Banks. Banks was responsible for bringing acts such as Kenny Carter, The Exciters and The Dynamics to the fold as well as recording himself and his then wife, Joan Bates. The ‘A’ side, ‘It Was Like A Nightmare’ was written by Joan and Larry Banks and we feel it is a typical ‘Dave Godin side’. Taken just below mid-tempo it’s the familiar tale of a ‘lover’s triangle’; a well-used idiom for some of the very best Soul records. Our heroine is at the alter waiting to take her vows but has she got the man of dreams? One thing is for certain, the indecision is giving her nightmares! Whatever the outcome, she is definitely with the man of her choice on the flipside, ‘You Make Me Feel Good’. This was co-written by Zerben Hicks and a version by the Dynamics was issued on the flip of his magnificent opus ‘Lights Out’. Quite why this superior version remained in-the-can is a mystery and was beautifully described by Dave himself: “Working with an escalating intensity and depth, their gospel-based question and response technique, takes the record to dizzying heights of brilliance” Now if that doesn’t whet your appetite and have you eager to own this music on a 45, nothing will! Please take a few minutes to listen to the promotional video. We hope you’ll agree, this great double-header is a 45 that every Soul fan will want to have in their collection. Both sides are now available on a beautifully mastered 45. DD007 collector’s release is a limited pressing @ just £12 each plus postage and packing. Avoid Disappointment. Pre-order ON WEBSITE ONLY now, while stocks last: www.diggin-deep.com Diggin’ Deep Records – Sheffield, England.
