Can't go wrong with Willie. You're right... "Sunshine Lady" is a Beaut... and wait 'til you hear "Talk To Me" "Just Another Day" "Love Me Back" off the "Ode" LP. Also recommend "AintThat Mellow, Mellow" "All about The Money Game" off the "Foxy Brown" album... and the awesome "I Can Sure Give You Love" and "After Love Has Gone" on the "House Party LP. Heads up on "Tell Me Why Has Our Love Turned Cold" too, the unreleased UK TMG 45... which is a superb slice of 70's soul... and there's loads more from Mr Hutch. Sean

Here's (some of) mine... in no particular order. Dave Grounds - The Charade in Rotherham - Early 70's. The Best DJ never to become a 'name'... but a local hero none the less! Jimmy Campbell - Ace Face - Old Wheelite - A Top Mod and a Real Soul Man. Helped me so much in my quest for Rare Soul. Gave me a copy of Betty Lavette "Let Me Down Easy" in 1973... and changed my life. Also, quite probably, the Nicest Guy on the Planet! Malc Burton - Top Drawer Promoter. Gave me the breaks in the 70's. Later in the 80's, we launched "The Harlem Shuffle" at Clifton Hall together. He knew talent when he saw it! A Top Bloke. Dave Godin - Mentor - Soul Music Journalist - Legend. Hung on his every word. Bought his every recommendation. A totally unique individual and a close personal friend. Sadly missed. Sean Hampsey

As an aside (and a bit off thread), I bumped into Dave berry about 12 months ago in an old Church off Broadfield Road. He's got an antiques stall in there. Bought a few bits off him. Great little place, full of bargains.... no vinyl though!

Frank White is still with us and I believe still doing the odd 'Blues - Revival' type gig... with Dave Berry. Saw him a few times in local clubs in the 70's. We used to call 'em the Wank Fright Band. Immature eh? Sean

Lucky lad. The Esquire is now The Leadmill if anyone's interested. It was owned by Terry Thornton (less said about him the better). Pete Stringfellow was the DJ who later set up the (King) Mojo in competition with the Leadmill... and the rest is history! The other big Allnighter venue at the time was the 'Club 60' (also owned by Thornton) who had Sonny Boy Williamson & Lightening Hopkins, but it couldn't compete with the Esquire & Mojo in the Soul / R&B stakes. The Mojo had a lot of Old Blues artists whereas the Esquire was pure Soul.... consequently the first true "SOUL Allnighter". Stringfellow also made his name at The Black Cat on City Road n Sheffield. I saw Dave Berry there as a kid, when my cousin worked as a Barmaid. He was a bit of a local hero and a neighbour of hers!... You were as likely to see the likes of Procul Harum, Dave Berry, O'Haras Playboys & Joe Cocker as Inezz & Charlie Foxx. The Leadmill is still Sheffield's most 'atmospheric' club. Seen lots of good stuff there over the years, from Gino Washington to Womack & Womack! They held a Mojo reunion about 18/20 years ago there, and I appeared on the Front page of the Sheffield Star with Stringfellow. Got some serious stick at work the next day . A few old mates, Guys now in their 60's (and very much older than me ) have verified that the Esquire (now 'essentialy' the Leadmill - in the same block) was the first UK's 'Soul' Allnighter... and I've always believed that to be the case. Close, Ken, but The Esquire, in Sheffield, was before the King Mojo. Another Stringfellow gig! Not sure if it was the first "R&B Soul Allnighter" in the UK though Ken, but that was always the South Yorks perspective. Sean

Now you've got one, I hope it's an issue. If you want the side for 'us modern boys' just wait until you hear the flip! "Talk To Me" is the side... and it's an awesome Modern Soul record. The whole LP, from whence it came, "Ode To My Lady" is a must. Also contains the BEAUTIFUL "Just Another Day" (which is also on 45) and "Love Me Back" a tremendous Modern dancer! Sean

Aussie deal was a really strange one. I have Supremes "Lovelight Starts Shining etc" and others on Oz HMV! Aussie 'Tamla Motown' issued quite a few things that didn't come out over here on 45. Isley Bros "All Because I Love You, Willie Hutch "Talk To Me", Martha & The Vandellas "Heartless / Taking My Love " immediately spring to mind.... but I have a few others. The OZ TM EP's are also particularly nice. All on the familiar Black & Silver livery. Not seen the Marvelettes on Top Rank tho' Pete! Sean

Curiously, the MCA issue (Legit Reissue) plays fine! Was a BIG record in Rotherham early 70's where the lads affectionately christened it "Jack Carter" for some reason. A proper record! Sean

If memory serves me right (and I think it does) "This Is The House" was also on the "Armed & Extremely Dangerous" LP. I think the track 'just' pre-dates the Philly Groove issues. Very soon after its release on Scepter the Girls were signed to Philly Groove. Long ago, I heard that "This Is The House" backed with "One Step away" was scheduled for release on UK Pye (and that Test Pressings and 'Promos' were produced - Pye int 25613). but the deal had to be pulled as distribution (of Philly Groove) was then with Bell (in the UK) (whereas Scepter / Wand would have been with Pye). Never had or seen one though! Anyone got one? Scan? Sean
