  2. Hi all, Well, its that time of year again It's 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, which started in 2007, here we go again! Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers. You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet! You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months. It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves. It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster! We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' Whatever floats your boat! With increased diversity around these days, this should be an interesting list! How about those funky groovers. Are they now providing a rich new seam of quality music to add to the Northern playlists? No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year! So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2014. Oh... and a Happy (and Soulful) New Year to all! Sean Hampsey
  3. No; same flip as the Soul label copy "Sweeter as The Days Go By" Sean
  4. Gold Wax would be as rare as the Professionals Sean. Hot wax, surely! Sean
  5. There are two differently labelled blue issues. Sean
  6. Bottom line is Moses Smith, Tomangoes and Salvadors are simply much better records than the other three (to my ears at least, lol) so I imagine that fans of the former would generally have no problem with the latter! Sean
  7. Know the feeling Joe. Happens to me all the time. Information overload. Sean
  8. Mmmmmmmmm Don't recall that Joe. You don't mean Rosie Jones 'Have Love Will Travel' do you? Came out on a Sound Gems boot and then the Today copies turned up in quantity. Benny Johnson was never in demand, not for a minute, and was around in huge quantity, a solid 10p Soul packer, from the day it was released. Confused of Chesterfield.
  9. I have the same West Indian Stateside Dave. Had it for decades. Love the title 'The Say' - like some kind of 60's dance craze! A Definite original and the only way to own it Sean
  10. Lovely record I've played out many times over very many years, but it's always been a solid floor clearer for me. Sean
  11. Strong school of thought around the idea that Chuck Wood is actually JR Bailey. Sean
  12. It's the ultimate fantasy tease... Ric-Tic 126 Darrell Banks - Open The Door / Our Love Is In The Pocket Sean
  13. Yep - early 80's Sam and Arthur spinning the 70's. Sean
  14. Like Dylan said... still America's Greatest Living Poet Sean
  15. Hahaaaaaa! Yes it probably is Steve, I'll give you that... :D The facts are, Tony Rounce, Dean Rudland and Alec Paolo turned up this beauty in Muscle Shoals along with several (actually many) other previously unheard Goldwax gems. Mr Plumb was sent an advance of this initially and made a huge fuss about it, like you would not believe... and very rightly so! It's one of the best things discovered in the past 20 years (IMO). And Steve had the honour! I was the one riding shotgun on this magnificent discovery and was sent a copy to play up at Just Soul etc. where it was very well received. This followed the tracks I was sent initially; Willie Walker 'Runaround', William Bollinger 'I Won't Have To Cry No More' and the magnificent 'One More Hurt' from Candi Staton. The 'Two Willies' 45 came as a result of the heavy, heavy, promotional activity around that time, up at Just Soul and then, some months later, from the eventual release of the CD album 'Steppin' Stone' - a truly wonderful compilation of unreleased goodies. See the review and grab one while you still can! https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/soul-news/look-whats-just-out-a-stunning-compilati-r2052 Yes, it's over 3 years since these were first broken 'oopt north' and seems like only yesterday. Very exciting times. Totally wonderful music. More please Sean
  16. Think I've got a spare. Will check this weekend. Sean
  17. For a guy who didn't have the greatest voice, he sure made some great records. Fond memories of 1971 first hearing "Here I Go Again" and blowing my mind to pieces! Sean
  18. Spot on Dave. Massive PITCHES record! We always played off the CD at the time but I picked up the 12" a few years later via Blake. Sean
  19. If you're referring to the Goldsoul book, it was revised and a new edition published in the last 12 months. Sean https://www.goldsoul.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=68 .
  20. You're probably talking about what would have been the last Soul City release had it come out. SC 120 "Since There's No Doubt". It has the same backing track as Total Eclipes on Right On. Jackson was apparentley a bit of a loose cannon. Ended up in a punch up in Soul City record shop and him storming off with unfinished business. It is alleged that he spent his last few nights in London living it up in a Heathrow Hotel before departing back to the US. He told reception staff to charge it all to his 'employer' Soul City records.
  21. Also recorded by Cresa Watson on Charay. Sean
