  1. More chance of getting 6, 3, 45, 7, 89! Sean
  2. You're right. So right mate. She did have Lobsters inside her. Joan Crawford had Hamburgers. Thanks mate. All the best. See ya. Love to the wife and kids. Cheers. c***
  3. Classic example... "Ronnie Dyson - Lady In Red". Cost me 35p off Lincoln Market before I took it to Cleggy and it became a monster! Nice list Geordie! Can't fault ya. Sean
  4. Leave Joan Crawford out of this. This is a serious Topic! Sean
  5. Mate, long before my dangerous liason with TS ( ) me and John Kennedy (The MIGHTY) were doing most of our local gigs from 72 - 74 before we took over at THE CHARADE in Rotherham which I worked until 78 (if you recall). I was also running the Green Dragon in 76 - 77 and had a few thousand hours flying time behind the decks long before I came to your local Bun fight and introduced the crowd to summink decent! Happy days Old friend. Sean
  6. Like a Cross between PIGMEAT MARKHAM - DEREK & CLIVE - CHEECH & CHONG, Dave. I'll stick to Tyrone Davis thanks mate! Sean
  7. No you can't Malc. Did my first professional (paid) set in 1972. Didn't work with you until 78 / 79.... by which time I'd got zits! Sean
  8. You are so right Maverick, but I'm sure you've learned by now, during your frequent visits to Soul Source, that there are:- 1. Those who like there Soul Music - Soulful - On Any Format - At Any Price 2. Those who like there Soul Music - Soulful - On Vinyl Only - At Top Price 3. Those who like there Soul Music - Not So Soulful - On Vinyl Only - At Top Price And a whole bunch of others inbetween. Sean
  9. No, but I'm more than happy to play a 2nd ssue Mark...! Course, I've always been more obscure than most of my records... which is what I think keeps my 'sets' ... rather than my records ... quite 'exclusive'. Lets face it... and a few people on here have said it already... the secret is to JUST PLAY GOOD RECORDS! Been DJ'ing 35 years and never played a record I'm ashamed of! (well... maybe just the one ). Been to far too many a night where some Bloke behind the decks (hardly a DJ) with a Box of 'rarities' takes up a whole hour trying to impress his mates (and strangers) with 20 odd basically crap (but expensive) records that nobody wants to either listen to or dance to. Just Madness. If you've got very little dough... but you've got really good 'EARS' you can still put an awesome set together... so go for it Gordy! Sean
  10. Gawd, I just love Dave when he's pissed! Sean
  11. Personally, I think that if a DJ can't afford to play an entire set of £500+ records, unknowns and one-offs he shouldn't call himself a Soul DJ. What does it matter if the record is good (or even if its amazing) if it's not incredibly expensive it absolutely should not be played.... under any circumstances. This is a scene for people with deep pockets. I happen to be loaded. Which of course, makes me a shit hot Soul DJ. If you can't afford the tools, don't try and learn the trade. Sean PS: I am, of course, talking Ballocks. I made a career out of playing high quality 'cheapies' and was probably one of the first Allnighter DJ's to play an entire set for much less than a fiver! (Of course, in them days a fiver would get you two tickets to the pictures, a fish and chip supper and a taxi home!) Important to remember that they all cost less than a quid at one time! Nowadays, many of my 50 pence and £1 records are worth a bloody fortune! (but that's besides the point ) Nobody said it better than Gordy. It's what's in the grooves. Period.
  12. The Howard Mallett Club was a Soul Venue - early to mid/late 70's. Sean
  13. Nice Dave, Raw Stuff... sounds like Howard Tate to these ears! Sean
  14. Paul, It's a bloody great record (I'm a big O'Jays fan and started an O'Jays appreciation thread on here a few months ago), but what does it matter if other people (as in 'you lot') rate it or not? No need to seek the approval of others. If it moves you then that's all that matters, surely! Sean
  15. I think that if you say you have Paul, then who are we to doubt you! Sean
  16. I reckon, in principle, that this is a pretty reasonable (if not over optimistic) request. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Some would say that the two 'known' copies (known to UK collectors and held by UK collectors) are almost certainly not the only two copies out there. I have heard furtive whispers of others 'turning up' over the years (one dealer advertised a copy less than 10 years ago which reputedly ended up with a very 'private' Motown collector). Rare record, absolutely... but I doubt that there are only two copies on the entire planet... and certainly, if I had one, I'd be pm'ing sunnysoul right now, instead of typing this post. Also, if I wanted to acquire a copy (I don't), this might be as good a place as any to get the ball rolling. Sean
  17. Agree, there's some great stuff on the Memphis logo, although the original poster was asking for more info on the artist rather than claiming it to be the best thing on the label. From memory the writer was Earl Cage, who has superb credentials within Southern Soul circles (Spencer Wiggins "I Can't Be Satisfied" etc.). Don't concur with the comment from Mikey at all... as I feel it's a standout midtempo, finger snapper with amazing production and vocals... but, hey, diversity rules! Anyone else know anything about The Girls? Sean Hampsey
  18. Bought it when new Bob... and you're right... a superb compilation. Thoroughly recommend the Lorraine Johnson "Can I Hold You To It" track to all Soul Sourcers and the deeper cuts from Jean Battle, Barbara Lynn, Irma Thomas etc are indispensible. Top Tip Bob. Sean
  19. Hi Bob, Do you know if they recorded anything else either as "The Girls" or under any other name? Sean
  20. Ahem! Apart from my mention of "Mark My Words" on Post 2 of this very thread eh! Sean
  21. I don't know who they were... but those Girls sure could sing! One of the best double siders around for under £20 with the triffic vocal gymnastics on the flip "Mark My Words". Wouldn't be surprised to find it was Jewel Bass and Thomisine Anderson etc. (Carbon Copies?). Sean Hampsey
  22. I think that this was actually Booted on a lookalike "Nite Life" label... not the earlier Black and Silver boot but a genuine, looks like the real thing until you get up close, counterfeit bootleg! If it wasn't, I've left dozens of proper ones in boxes over the years! Sean
  23. Levert "I'm Still" on Tempre.... being best, not just by inches either... by a bloody mile! (oh... and Ronnie Lovejoy "I Miss Her" on INCREDIBLE... also the best 12" ever (if that's possible ) Sean
