  1. Ah, shame about the Van Stevie. T'was a helluva fire! Would have warped a few records would that! Cuts Back to thread topic before the abuse starts! Sean
  2. Best they don't revive the Saturday afternoon North v South Soul Quiz then Simon. Wouldn't like to see you wind up on the losing side! Look forward to meeting up with you there. And will definately point out Fraser for you. Scotland's Finest! Sean
  3. That's right Steve. Family ties and all that. But after the Famine we had to let few of the old 'uns go. Things were tough, around Galway & Roscommon. Even the Tinkers that used to scrounge off the land ended up emigrating... to Sheffield, I seem to recall.
  4. You'll get to meet Fraser Dunn at Essence, Simon, if you're going. The Big Man never misses. Sean
  5. I'll play it for you at Essence. Just after we've nagged you into getting a round in. Place'll be flooded!
  6. And I thought it was Pete asking us what records we listened to... while we're doing the ironing! But if it's about ironing out the warps in records, I'm afraid I've not had as much success as Pete. I recently turned a slightly warped (otherwise mint) copy of Gladys Knight "No One Can Love You More" that I picked up for a quid at a records fair into a Black Plastic Bin Liner, in one foul swoop! Sean
  7. The LP is "Dreams Come True" on Universal family, Simon. Sean
  8. Whether the term 'hotbox' is recent or not, the theory has been around for ever. Terry Sampson (ace Nighter Promoter from back in the day) had the legend "If You've Only Got 20 Good Records... Play Your Best 20" stuck to the record decks, and he made a point of referring every DJ to it. I remember Pat Brady and I having a discussion 25+ years ago, where he believed it was nigh on impossible to be a Top DJ and a Collector also. He believed that you had to continuously sell the 'back of the box' tracks to finance the new 'front boxers!'. It's a reasonable theory, if you're always aiming to be upfront and keep your set 'fresh'... but as a Soul Lover 1st, a Collector 2nd and a DJ 3rd, I've always found it unattractive... even though I'm always adding new tracks to my box, I just can't bear to part with the ones that drop out of the back! Personally, I'd rather hear a DJ with a good pair of 'ears' and a decent collection to call upon, over someone with a box of so called 'hot' items that are, in reality, only average. The Elipsis (case in point) is about as 'average' a record I've heard played out in ages and the the Stevens & Foster, Jeri track is, at best, a 4 out of 10 tune (IMO). Still a reasonable approach though, if the intention is to attempt to raise standards. Sean Hampsey
  9. Yes, I know it. Had it for years and it is a nice 70's sounding thing that I originally played at Pitches, but it never really took off, back then. I have the Rendevous 45 and I also have the track on the "Universal Family" label "Dreams Come True" album which features several similar tracks by OC... well worth looking out for. Sean Hampsey
  10. Oh Lord, quite a few that do that to me, going back over the years... Smokey & The Miracles "Who's Gonna Take The Blame".. memories of my first love (when I was 13... and she was only 12!). Jackie Wilson "Just As Soon As The Feeling Is Over"... another personal thing... from when I was a few years older. Walter Jackson "Not You"... Has there ever been a more meloncholy record? "I can't believe it's true" James Carr "These Aint Raindrops"... just slays me. And finally... the incredible Bobby McClure "To Get What You Got"... is my favourite all timer but I daren't play it too often... cos it always leaves me wrecked. There are loads more. Sean Hampsey
  11. And the incredible "I Never Thought I'd Be Losing You" Dead ripe for reactivation! Sean
  12. That,s true Paul. Johnny was lead on "Give Me Some Emotion". Have played "Shy Guy" out in recent months and remember playing it as a 'virtual' new release. Never forget a very young Alan Senior drooling over the decks at my copy, some 30+ years ago. Priceless. Always loved the CISCO 45 too and rate "Accept Me As I Am" as one of the finest ballads of all time. Would certainly be good to see others getting behind "Shy Guy" again! Sean
  13. I have two CD's by James. The most recent was recorded analogue and sounds the bomb. James is more appreciated in the US, than in the UK, sadly. Good news is he's the support act to Bryan Adams over here some time this year. Should garner him a few more fans. I hope! Sean Hampsey
  14. Superb double sider, Derek, and at the right price too! Sean
  15. --> QUOTE(mark.b @ Mar 21 2007, 09:35 PM) link spun by greatstone lads as well on 45 paul and myself have one mine is on decca german i think pauls is on another label, chris morgan put us onto it at cleethorpes 2 years ago i also have another one on poker called get down also a picture cover. mark Thanks Mark, Hoping Chris can get one for me too! Cheers Sean
  16. Many thanks Chris. I was at Prestatyn, but missed that! Would be very much appreciated if you can. Cheers Sean
  17. God Bless Luther Ingram. One of the finest Soul Singers ever. "Trying To Find My Love" on Koko has long been a favourite. Also, the Majestic "Love Aint Gonna Run Me Away". Sean Hampsey
  18. Hi Blake, Certainly not one for the masses. But a real cool, grower, I reckon. Did a compilation of recent CD tracks that I'd obtained for the trip down to Prestatyn and this one kept getting the 'repeat' treatment. Can I have one, please? Sean
  19. Pretty sure it was on your recent CD Steve. Sent you an email about an hour ago to verify (and cadge a spare!). Should have known it was a Blake record. Quality mate! How much did the Wigan Warriors bag 'em for on eBay? Sean
  20. OK Simon. Thanks anyway. At least we know that they are 'out there!' Nice track on the LP in "I'll Keep Holding On". Also out on a 45. I'll take either! Best Sean
  21. Thanks Simon. I'll have it! Sean
  22. That's the Man. He was an American GI, Ex Vietnman Vet, who eventually (via Germany) wound up in Holland. Now... for pity's sake, someone sell me the record (before they all want one!) Scan of the LP.... is here! All I need now is the real thing! Best Sean
  23. Might be Simon, but not sure. The Billy Jones I'm looking for passed away in 1982. I think the NIA release "I Can't Wait To Break" may have been 'slightly' later. Not sure though mate. Could be the same guy? Sean
  24. Please sell me yours! Thanks for looking. Sean Hampsey
  25. Got to be the Two Hundred 60's & 70's Soul 45's I liberated from Jellys Records in Honolulu, mid 80's. Anything I wanted... 10 for a Dollar! Still smiling 20 years later! Sean Hampsey
