Nothing there to criticise. It's a very simple, honest and straightforward account of the life of a typical UK Soul fan. Nothing 'Godinesque' about it. Reg cuts to the chase and just tells it how he saw it. I'm sure most of us can relate entirely with his experiences. In summary: its a smashing little book. Just couldn't put it down... and I read it in one take! Well done Reg for having the initiative and for taking the time out of your life to put your thoughts and memories down on paper.

No Malc, the 'uptempo' quote was from elsewhere. You dont arf come up with some beauties though mate! For the time being, that's all I can find out for ya. Gotta go and make a Spag Bol for me starving herd! If you need any more info meanwhile, you should contact Craig Charles!

It appears that Bobby and Harvey were the 'Moonlighters' - a 'group within a group'. Just copied this of a page on the net:- As another added attraction, in the early days of the Moonglows Chess years, they provided fans with 'the group within a group' concept recording as The Moonlighters. Originally to be just a duo of Bobby Lester and Harvey Fuqua for the Checker label as they were on "I'm So Alone", the full group recorded the songs "Shoo Doo Be Doo" one of the greatest up tempo vocal group sides ever, and the follow up "A Hug And A Kiss". Soon after the Moonlighters concept was dropped and the Moonglows made musical history through the decade. Some resouces quote the release as 'Moonglows' others as 'Moonlighters'. Another resource is quoted as follows:- The same month that Chess released "Sincerely," they issued a Lester-Fuqua duet, "Shoo Doo Be Doo," as Bobby Lester and the Moonlighters. Feeling they had an up-tempo hit but not wanting to wait for "Sincerely" to die down and not wishing to distract from the ballad image they were projecting, Chess's sister label Checker became home to the Moonlighters. Though not charting nationally, "Shoo Doo Be Doo" received extensive airplay and sales in pockets of the country, and booking agents looking to hire the group found out that to get them, they had to take the Moonglows too (I wonder why). The Moonlighters' schizophrenia lasted for one more single in 1954. "Hug and a Kiss" failed and they went back to being full-time Moonglows. Have you got the record Malc?

Yeh... you're right....if you're gonna start counting! Anybody under 50' is a teenie to me and Malc!

Hi Malc, That release, by all accounts was just Bobby and Harvey. Bobby was born in 1930 and Harvey 1929... so they were very young - teenagers! Bobby passed away in 1980 (only 50) so he was certainly a young guy at the time of the Columbia LP & 45! Sean

Phew, Where did that year go? Exactly 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so here we go again! Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness over the next year... or simply list any number that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers. You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play... but haven't yet got around to it. You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months. It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves. It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just become a monster! No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a plug in the coming year! As a quick lookback, the Top Tips for 2007 will appear on the next post. So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2008. Sean Hampsey

Sam Dees - Rare Film - The Ultimate Gift To A Soul Fan
Sean Hampsey replied to Sunnysoul's topic in All About the SOUL
Everyone except John F, Rob? Who do I need to kill then mate to get a copy? What a night that was. I've got a few pics but never seen the vid. Sean -
To clarify, I didn't intend to add to the eternal 'what is Soul?' debate, merely intended to express a measure of bemusement as to how we in the UK (particularly on the 'Northern' scene) tend to ignore real Soul talent... while it's current. Sure, we go well out of our way to heap adoration and appreciation on talented soul artists in retrospect, but rarely do we recognise it while it's right under our noses. In some bizarre and twisted manner, wannabe's such as Winehouse / Paul Weller etc. are often lauded (particularly on these pages) as having some kind of 'Soul' credibility over their stateside contemporaries. Not too much wrong with either (IMO) but, come on, own up, how many Northern Soul fans have ever even heard of Floyd Taylor, Donnie Ray, Anthony Hamilton or Calvin Richardson never mind put their money into supporting the artist by buying their music... while it's still available . The UK Soul scene has a meritous track record in giving struggling artists a brief moment in the spotlight, but often this comes far to late in their lives to make a difference... and sadly the likes of Winehouse will stick more up her nose in a month than some of the artists above will earn in an entire career. Of course, the mere fact that she had a hit with 'Rehab' makes her a Journalists and PR mans dream. All standing by to come up with the latest headine as she publicly self destructs. Perhaps one of our current Soul artists should make an album called "I Was Doomed to A Life at The Car Wash (Until The UK Discovered Me... Sooner Rather Than Later)". I've said it many times on here already. There's some excellent music and some fabulous (authentic) Soul artists doing great things - right now - in the US. Soul music fans should check 'em out now - that is unless we're all happy for history to keep on repeating itself. Sean

Don't be silly Martin, Need to wait another 20 years for the artist to be near Bankrupt and almost lose their voices before that happens. Can't believe the column inches on this forum during the past 12 months Re: Winehouse... with hardly a murmer on real deal Soul artists, doing superb things right now! (Sharon Jones, Donnie Ray, Ryan Shaw, Charlie Jones, Floyd Taylor etc.). Just plain weird! Will be worth logging on in 2020 to see these artists getting 'discovered'.
-
Worth repeating that post Mark! Took the words right out of my mouth!

Yes it was the hottest thing around... for about a fortnight! UK Private Stock label. Picked one up at its peak for pennies at Tony's in Lincoln.

Ms Winehouse is (by her own admission) heavily influenced by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Sharon Jones Band (The Dap-Kings) backed her on her US tour - the 12 coast-to-coast US shows that helped propel the Winehouse album into the US Top 10 in its first week. Think Soul Sourcers should seriously check out the 'source of the soul' on https://www.myspace.com/sharonjonesandthedapkings Sean

Not nearly as much as it should!
