  1. Definatelly pre-dates Stafford, I bought this off the 'front page focus' of John Andersons Soul Bowl list circa 75/76 for 85 pence !!!!

I know, cos that was the way to build your collection in those days, that and soul packs.

Yep, I had it mid 70's and played the other side 'Tell It To The Wind' out regularly late 70's / early 80's.

  2. What a fantastic Northern Soul record, actually a truly great, moody 60's soul record.

When was this first played and where?

    Agree Jock. Fantastic!

Must have been played on the scene almost from the get go (67/68). It was released in the UK around the same time as Rodger Collins 'She's Looking Good' and I knew of both of those in 1970. In fact everybody round these parts seemed to have both records in their collection. They were both played at the Wheel for sure as I got my copy from a guy who picked up all the Wheel sounds. Was a pretty big record in the local clubs here long before I'd heard of Northern Soul. Still bloody love it!

  3. 85 I think Warrington started.  It ran on the Friday night and Stafford was on a Saturday.  It was the beginning of the Three Voices Soul Club when Kingy got involved with Stafford and Crofty at Parr Hall, three clubs coming together to cooperate and avoid clashes.

Three Voices Echoes Ad for beginning of 1986.

Think Warrington started '83 or '84 Chalky as I DJ'd the first few and I recall I stopped doing Warrington and Bradford in '84.

Also recall attending the first Three Voices meeting at Stafford TOTW, and feel sure that will have been '84.

  4. Morecombe was a huge venue in the early 80's (worthy of the list) and a MUST as far as the Letchworth crew were concerned and some of the best times I ever had were at the venue - can still see the Pier bouncing as you approached with the 1000s feet shuffling to the Modern or backdropping to the 6T's. The Starlight room that baked you as the sun came up, the cafe at the bottom where you all met up after to sort where you were all moving onto and getting lifts etc, Marc Farleys perm that made even Dave Thorleys look cool (no honestly it did!) lol Memories - I know That Shaun G took film of the nights ( I know this because I'm on one and so was Rob Kearney just as he span off the stage in the dance comp!) and it would be great if he could post those or the pics as we never took that many pics as we thought we'd be like that for ever - DOH!

Yep - Morecambe came along on the cusp of Clifton & Cleggy and around the rise of Bradford Queens Hall & Warrington Parr Hall.

But was post 1982 from memory (83 / 84?) so couldn't have made the chart.

  5. These are the 1982 / 1983 results from the Black Beat magazine Annual Poll.

The Early 80's - Very Healthy Indeed as I recall:- Venue wise, Record wise and DeeJay wise!

Post Wigan and The Mecca - Not much sign of some of some 'names' but I'm sure they'd be the first to concede, they weren't really around much at the time.

Guess it only goes to show, every dog has his day, lol.

    Interesting reading!

  6. Sean something thats always struck me about people who have such large collections, how many of your records will you never, ever  play again?

Do you ever think about that? I'd say it would be fairly large %

If so, whats the point in having them? Any thoughts on this from others with large collections?

I've got a very modest collection (less than 1000) and am going through them and recording onto iTunes in alphabetical order (seems to be taking ages and i"m only up to D  ) and its struck me how many I haven't played in years :g:

    Most of them Steve.

    I rarely have the time.

    It's an illness.

    An unhealthy obsession.

    Like most 'extremes'.

Seriously thinking about applying a few filters of my own at the minute.

    But I can't imagine a future without a collection.

  7. Gutted totally gutted. :(

"Just Soul"  Womack nite that was just after the 3 Amigos + 1 had seen him in concert and it seemed that every other or was it every record was a Womack track..........? Totally an unforgettable nite........? If you had planned a soul nite featuring one artist, most people would have said it won't work? Well if you were not there then shame on you, because it was just one of those nites where it worked to a tee.

My thoughts are with the Womack Family, but  Sean,Tatts, Kev, John &  Bully.....we enjoyed his music...but you guys championed it. Respect lads for your love of a true Soul music legend without discussion.

    Dave Halsall. :(

It was a great night Dave.

    A celebration of Wo-Magic!

    Thank you for reminding me.

24 hours since the sad news was confirmed and I'm still feeling numb.

The many beautifully written and heartfelt, considered, tributes I've read on here and on Facebook today say so much about how important Bobby Womack was to music and to our lives.

Losing him was something that many of us have been braced for, these past 3.5 years, but it still came as a shock and we all feel a great sense of loss.

    Thank you Bobby Womack.

    You were the greatest.

  8. I'd just like to thank Sean for doing such a fantastic job in talking this up.

I'm really pleased with the music that we have on this volume. However I got so caught up in the process of putting it together that I forgot to do any promotion.

Fortunately Ady sent Sean a copy and he's done a far better job than I would have anyway!

A couple of things worth noting

1/ the unknown vocalist sounds familiar, but I couldn't match it with anyone. Love to know if anyone recognises him.

2/ I failed to notice that the Jacksonians is a cover of the Marvin and Tammy classic.

    Cheers Dean.

It ought to sell a Million!

Here is a huge bunch of unknown (or hardly known) Top Drawer real Soul Music - brought out of the cold and into the light for our listening pleasure by Ace Kent.

A CD that EVERYONE who calls themself a Soul fan must own!

I'm selling up and keeping this one.

    Thank you.

  9. Good mornin' all.

    I need your help.

Does anyone know the email address or other contact details for the Soul Source member Longy?

A book is soon to be published on Mod culture which covers the soul scene to a large extent. Longy once posted an 80's Allnighter scene photograph on Soul Source and the author would like permission to reproduce that photograph in the book.

I did try pm'ing Longy 26th May but he has not been on here since that morning and hasn't read the message.

if someone who knows Longy can get in touch with him and ask him to reply to the pm I'd be very grateful.

In the event of my not being able to make contact with him does anyone else have such an image that the author might be given permission to use?

Deadline is looming and a suitable photograph is needed urgently.

Image is attached to give you an idea of what they are looking for.

    Many thanks,

  10. I'm still stunned by this.

Couldn't be more shocked if I'd found the copy myself.

Think I was the first person to ask the mysterious NickW how much he wanted for it.

I'm still waiting to hear

He may decide to keep it - and fair play to him if he does - but if it ever comes up for sale I'd certainly be in the bidding.

What makes it really unique - and somehow more intoxicating and important than other 'rarities' that have surfaced in the past 40 odd years - is that none of us knew that it even existed!

It was a myth, a fantasy, a piece of fiction... a legend!

This iconic piece has every possible credential and has raised the game completely.

I said it before and I'll say it again, after this ANYTHING is possible!

    Sean
