  1. Hi there Ivor, my Beauty, I hope that you are very, very well! Spot on re the CB Overton & JB being the same track and Ty & George is the same 'tune' but replayed/recorded. Thanks also for confirming the KonKord is a 2nd Press. I thought so too, but Cunnie saw it the other way round which is why I asked for confirmation. Top job mate (not you Martin ). Promise I'll pay the Ex Mrs a visit before we're very much older and get you that there Soul record jobby we talked about! Promise! Sean
  2. If you were offered it by Jimmy Sheard, from Sheldon, then that was the first copy to be found in the US. Jimmy found it behind a door on the floor of a record shop. Paid about a dollar for it and sold it, on his return, at Yarmouth, early/mid 90's, to an old DJ for about 5-600 as I recall! Paid for his trip and a whole lot more. We all thought it was a bit of a wind up, but the old boy parted with the green! SWONS Sean
  3. Been a BIG 'Modern' spin for a while now. Top little tune for the Dancefloor and I would hope it would be well received were someone to give it a shot on the 'Northern' scene. Sean
  4. Good question - Can't put my hands on the C. B. Overton... but I'll guess it states pretty much the same as the Johnny Bristol... (please can anyone confirm?) "If I Can't Stop You" C. B. Overton 1977 Shock 45 Johnny Bristol 1981 Handshake LP Written By - J.C. Robinson, B. Williams Jr, M. McQueen Jr (confirmed credited on the Johnny Bristol) Arranged by Hense Powell (confirmed credited on the Johnny Bristol) The Hense Powell connection might lead one to think that the Bo & Ruth hit are same or similar to the above... ...and they are similar I'll admit. "You're Gonna Get Next To Me" Bo & Ruth 1976 Claridge 45 & LP Words and music - R L Kirkland, Bo Kirkland, Ruth Davis and Hense Powell However... despite the fact that the Ty Karim & George Griffin track "Keep On Doin'" cites none of the above as having been involved I'd maintain that "Keep On Doin'" uses the same 'tune' or basic melody as "If I Can't Stop You"... ...and I'm not alone in thinking this - see Post 2 & Post 5 of an earlier thread. /Ty-Kari...ffin-t8267.html Back in the early 80's when we were playing Bristol's "Love No Longer Has A Hold On Me", I obtained a 10" Acetate of his cut of "If I Can't Stop You" (As I recall, it was the same as is on the LP, but real nice on an Acetate). I tried to play it out, but it just didn't happen at the time. Fast forward to 1990, Canal Tavern, Thorne, I was gobsmacked to hear the Ty Karim & George Griffin track and even more amazed to find that the label credits gave no reference or credits to the CB Overton (Johnny Bristol) - Hense Powell tune! But to my ears it certainly IS the same tune. Now, unless the C.B. Overton 45 is credited to Kent Harris (who also wrote 'Lighten Up Baby'), methinks there was probably some jiggery pokery going on or an 'agreement' somewhere in 1980. We know that Kent Harris & Hense Powell worked together extensively in LA (Kris Records & Jimmy Preacher Ellis etc). Can you throw any light on this Ady? Aside from that... not really sure if Kon-Kord was the first issue or second issue. Steve Plumb asked the question earlier on here and got no response? /Idea-Mo...-12-t27578.html I won't be losing sleep over it, but it's always been a bit of a mystery track to me. Sean
  5. If you mean "You're Gonna Get Next To Me"... I would say nope, don't think so. Sean
  6. I think you're right Ady, but it looks like you're sorted now. Definately on a 45. Don't know if its of any relevance to what you're doing... and ya'll may already know this... but it's the same 'tune' as "If I Can't Stop You" by Johnny Bristol / C. B. Overton. Sean
  7. Some of us still need telling how good Aretha is, Steve. Sean
  8. Hi Mick, Really looking forward to this. It will be a pleasure to spend a couple of hours playing my kind of Soul on your esteemed show! It's been a while since I was in Cambridge. How will I find you? Just follow the vibe? Sean
  9. Good result. I've sold two of these on eBay in the past 10 years and always got $50+ for it. Withdrawn 45, due to legal action by Berry Gordy, and of interest to US Motown completists! Sean
  10. Yes, me too Steve. From memory, 'Money's Funny' / 'Million Dollar Love'. Can't remember the label though, off hand. Sean
  11. Probably Chinese Whispers. The story I heard was that she murdered the record! Joking apart... I never heard either tale! And I know Marva Whitney's came later... but there's no comparison IMO. Marva's version blinds it! Sean
  12. Agree... that's why I said 'normally' and 'unless this one's a genuine rarity'. Sometimes the 'covered' 45 remains genuinely rare and expensive (Maurice McAllister etc.) but more often than not, once the papers peeled away, an abundance of copies turn up. In my experience, DJ's often cover up records 'because' they are out there. Everyone knows that... but, love 'em or hate 'em, its still adds to the 'spice' for collectors! Sean
  13. Only one Brandon 45 on Quinvy, Dylan, "Strangest Feeling" / "Since I Fell For You"... both can be found on the Soulscape "On The Rainbow Road" CD (Soundclip Here for 'Strangest' https://www.garryjcape.com/sscd7001.htm). SelfPreservation (South Camp) and Rainbow Road / Something Wonderful on Tower were also recorded at Quinvy, as I'm sure you're aware. Incidentally, Ted Taylor also did a nice Bluesy version of Strangest Feeling! Good luck hunting for the 45. Hard as nails! Sean
  14. 8 known copies of a 45 that most people don't yet know the identity of... ...normally translates into scores of copies... once the word is out! Unless this one's a genuine rarity. Who is it then? Then we'll know for sure! Sean
  15. Clever stuff Paul. Here's another! https://www.grapheine.com/bombaytv/index.ph...219306e222389f9
  16. That's the earlier one Sebastian (very nice too!). It was out later though, on Black Tamla Motown, as you say. Sean
  17. That is a late UK Reissue. Remember it coming out. The first UK was Mowest 3002, it was reissued, on Mowest 3024, mid 70's, to satisfy 'Northern' demand... and the Black Tamla Motown came out some years later when the Mowest logo was truly canned, but keeping the 3024 Catalogue number. Never around in great quantity. Also out in Holland as Black Tamla Motown, at the same time, with pic cover. Never released as a US Mowest issue! Sean
  18. Hi Rob & Karen, Hope you and yours are well Got to agree with you guys. Have seen the great man perform a couple of times. A really incredible performer! Looks like a trip back to Memphis might be in order! Or... maybe someone should bring him back here??? The Soul Man live in Bridlington perhaps? Sean
  19. Flipside "She's My Woman" is an Old Archie Belll cover. Agree, nice tune! Sean
  20. It's Beau Williams. Lovely tune HitchHiking! Old, old, Windmil spin of mine from the 70's! Sean
  21. I've played it for some years off the LP and more recently off the World Pacific 45 (which is DJ only - never released). Bloody lovely record and (IMO) better than Jerry Butler or Lorraine Ellison versions. Got to be £50++ of anybody's money! Sean
  22. Come off it Kirsty... ...you know he's my absolute double!
