Thanks for the memory's Dave and all.
Yes, I'd agree it was a fantastic venue.
20 years eh? Where did they go?
Have been thinking about doing a reunion at some point, if enough people are up for it.
Then again, if we're not careful on the scene we'll be doing more reuniting... than uniting... if you get my drift!
Either way, they were great times and the music was truly 'across the board' quality Soul.
The attached was a tape of a representative playlist from the early months.
I think there were two more, if I'm not mistaken.
JB, I guess you'll probably be able to put your hands on this stuff and upload them
Anyone any memorys of the records played?

One Christmas there was the first time I got threatened with a knife for spilling a drink.
The 'first time'?
How many other times were there Derek?

Thought members might like to know about a great compilation, just out on Ace / Kent, of Sam Dees 1970's Demos & Masters, most of these previously unreleased...

Lovely tune mate that needs more exposure.

Just Soul spin of mine from a few years ago Jim. Is that where you heard it?

Hi Steve, no I haven't. Will check it out.
Yes, agree, a Shout special would be fab!
Try to include The Exciters 'You Know It Aint Right' an old Bradford spin of mine that I loved to bits back then!

This must be the 'Jimmy Sherman' alt version played by Andy Dyson for a few years now (Abtone Acetate).
Still the Coasters, by all accounts, but a different lead singer.

Originally unreleased and made available to us some 15 years ago on the Crazy Cajun / Edsel CD "The Soul Queen Of Texas".
No acetate that I'm aware of.

Pic of a flyer from March 1982 where you were the guest DJ Sean. Probably your first appearance there I think.

Yep - That'd be about right Martin.
I thought I must have attended about a dozen before I was brought in to DJ!
Brilliant mate.
Thanks,

Flyer from the first night is here along with a very interesting flyer from when Steve & Adrian had split with Senior (hope I'm not using his intellectual property here ).

Just curios as to what happened to the following - apologies if this has been covered
Black Grape - got some great stuff over the years from Gary
Black Knight - last I spoke to Gary many years ago and seem to remember he was diagnosed with something but can't recall what - cancer/MS?
Garry at Black Grape sold his stock back to the US to Craig Moerer / RecordsbyMail
Gary at Black Knight sold his stock to Tim Brown at Anglo American.
Both top draw fellas, still loving the music and still around.
Had a long chat with Gary (Black Knight) only a few weeks ago at Clifton Hall revival.
Glad to say he was looking very well.

The list needs some tidying but I will be getting round to it. The dates for Cleethorpes return is in one of the topics I started, Clifton Hall I think, I posted the echoes advert. Clifton Hall finished 1984 off top of me head. Stafford started April 82 until February 86.
That's a good start mate. Thanks.

Yes, I have fo the popular ones.
most of the Stafford DJ's were DJing other well known places before Stafford, mainly Wigan and Yate, same for some of the Clifton Hall DJ's who played all over the country. Sounds like quite a few had this record and played it all over the place when Arthur got his spares.
Yes agree. It was huge at the time. Arthur and Sam were great resources and never had a problem distributing some of the nice things they found on US trips (CoCo & Ben, Johnny Scott, etc.).
Would like to see that venue / dates list mate.
I think I have it that Clifton Hall started near the end of 1980 (October? - is that correct?) from memory, but have no idea of the date of the last one.
Havent got a clue as to when Cleggy Winter Gardens kicked off again or ended.
Just know we seemed to get through a mountain of records between us!

Dave would have played this at the same time as you would he not? Certainly before the demise of Clifton Hall.
I'd have said the record was played for 2+ years Chalks.
Stafford started after Clifton started but I think there was some 'crossover'.
Has anyone got the actual dates as to when the nighters of the early 80's actually started and ended?
Its always a grey area.

A couple of other Threads / Links that might be useful to the thread starter.
Clearly, the record lived on after Clifton Hall!

There's even a picture of Dave Thorley playing it at Stafford on the last un'

Richard certainly didn't play this at CH Sean. It was definitely played before you came on board mid 82. And it certainly wasn't on my playlist at Cleggy although I played it at CH earlier.
I can't remember any Cleggy playlists at the time including it but recall it being reviewed or at least listed in Blackbeat.
Hi Steve, who woke you up?
Don't disagree at all.
What I said was I played it regularly at (probably every) Clifton Hall, KGB, Cleethorpes after buying it from Arthur. And (as I said) I would have thought a couple of us had it there.
I also said it was a massive record in South Yorkshire at the time" which is absolutely the case.
I played it at KGB and Windmill etc. maybe before I even worked at Clifton (having bought it from Arthur... at the same time as others did!) but I don't think I ever missed a night at Clifton where I didnt play it.
The guy asked for some history on the record and I gave him some of what I could recall.
Think its probably right that Richard didnt play it at CH (much or even at all) was only half sure whether he did or not. What I was doing was disputing it being played in Mr M's as the thread starter had been informed.
Who else played it at Clifton, I honestly can't recall (must have been several - the record was huge) but it was certainly still played for a good couple of years afterwards, including by me (at Cleggy, in particular and Bradford etc.) and others - Darren, Adam, etc. and Dave Thorley, Robin etc. at Stafford.
But before all of that, it was an Arthur / Snaith record regardless of who, where, or when thereafter - And seems to be indemand again!
By the way, speaking of Clifton Hall.... where was you t'other week (at the reunion)?
You missed a great night.
Tons of old faces.
And very fond memories.
Are you doing the next un?

Funny thing is Sean I now have the time to do it properly, but to be honest can't be dealing with all the dickheads that have sprung up in recent times

So certainly not Mr M's then Arthur?

Contours - Baby Hit & Run - A Re-Re-Lease ?
in Look At Your Box
Posted · Edited by Sean Hampsey
On the 45 or LP first discussion, I certainly think the 45 came out a few months before the LP.
I bought the LP as I did most of that series, but I already knew 'Baby Hit & Run' before doing so.
Tamla Motown were still very much about 'new' release product at that time (73 / 74) and tended to bundle old stuff into the MFP compilations. I think the 'Baby Hit And Run' 45 release was as a result of a bit of digging at Motown, after the surprise success of JJ Barnes 'Real Humdinger, Isley Bros 'Tell Me It's Just A Rumour' etc. but the first venture was to put it out as a 45 and they packaged the LP a few months on, on the strength of it.
You'll recall they put out 'R Dean Taylor 'Theres A Ghost In My House' on 45 a couple of months later (after it being used heavily on the LP - which is maybe what's confusing some of us?) and that's the way I remember it.
