Why Billy? KTF. Drew

Been following the recent debates re KR's etc and whilst I find the whole thing facinating the main interest for me has been learning about the music policy of some venues and very well established DJ's. I have never been to KR's Stoke do but some posters give the impression that the music is mainly 'overplayed oldies'. Because I don't get to NS venues as much as I would like I am never quite sure which records fit this bill? I amuse myself by creating play lists that I would like to hear played out and I put them together as if i were going to DJ (I'm starting to get worried that I'm spending too much time on here). So., If I were a DJ (humour me here folks) .............. this would be my first ever set: If it wasn't for love. Jimmy Bee. I'll do anything. Doris Troy Lucky to be loved by you. Emmanual Laskey. Wake me, shake me. The Supremes. You don't want me no more. Major Lance. Every hurt makes you stronger. Chuck Bernard. Trust in me. Jackie Ross. Ain't nothing you ca do. Bobby Bland. I end up crying. The Vibrations. I got news for you. Benny Latimore. Rip off. Laura Lee. A love you can depend on. Brenda and The Tabulations. We got to keep on. Freddy Hughes. I'm the one who loves you. Billy Spoon. I don't want a playboy. Barbara Lynn. I need you like a baby. Andrea Henry. We ain't gonna make it. The Outsiders. I remember the feeling Barbara Lewis. Thinking about you. The Dells. Use you head. Mary Wells. Invitation. Band of Angels. Law against a heartbreaker. Kell Osborne. You keep coming back. 100% Pure Poison. A quitter never wins. Larry Williams & Johnnny Guitar Watson. Just believe in me. Geraldine Hunt. Good Times. Gene Chandler Now I know this would be a long spot but this is all in my head so it doesn't matter! So, would I have just done a spot full of overplayed oldies or underpalayed classics? Would I have filled the dancefloor or emptied it in your opinion? If my first spot was half decent I am available for birthdays, weddings and bar mitzvahs. If you want me for a soul do I'll have to borrow all you records! KTF. Drew.

My older sister's boyfreind/ex husband (said suade head mentioned on another post) had the Chubby Checker ATD mentioned above on BJD. He told me and my mates that it was an origional and the Parkway was not. We went running to the local youth club full of this only for some older and wiser soulie to put us straight! Never seen the label since those days so the pic above has conjured memories from my soul history as it were. KTF. Drew.

Who Introduced You To Soul And Are They Still Around?
Drew3 replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Older sister for me who is sill around but not into the music (she's about to take my 8yr old to see McFly and it's her who's using him!!!!). 1972 and just finished first year at secondary school. Usually I could be heard winging to our old lady "she's got her stuff on again". At that time I thought Fire by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (that might have been the year before but you'll get my drift) was the greatest thing I'd ever heard and I once said to our kid that he would be around a lot longer than her motown crap!!! One summer evening whilst our kid was out I went into the dining room and she'd left some of her Motown records out. We had one of those radiograms, (for the younger members of this site they looked like a sideboard) and I looked through what she had. I put on Needle In A Haystack and out of nowhere, completely unexpected, this feeling just took over me. Pretty familiar feeling I guess to most who are into this music. Seems to have coincided with realising that girls weren't all that bad and a very similar feeling and sensation I seem to remember!! Shortly afterwards I found out that a lad I knew around the corner who was 2 yrs older than me was into Motown and he had quite a collection. He took me to another lad's house were I bought my first record Stoned Love!! From this started going to the local youth club and progressed to other venues over the next few years. I ended up with all of our kid's records as she and her 'suade head' boyfriend had to get married shortly afterwards. No longer have the brother in law or more importantly the records! KTF. Drew. -
A Place by The Precisions. A real 'bubble gum' girly (no offence meant) intro and then a great song to follow. KTF. Drew.

The Soulclub Jukebox. No collection of my own so absolutely brill for me. KTF. Drew.

I love Don't be A Cry Baby by James Phelps. However, I've only ever heard it on TSCJB. Everytime I have asked for it out I've either been told "never heard of it" or that its megga bucks and dead rare. Is this right. Am I unlikely to hear it out? KTF. Drew.

Often at The Twisted Wheel the night is ended with Soothe Me by Sam and Dave. Brilliant end to the night with everyone clapping along. Often gets an encore as well! KTF. Drew.

Have family or friends ever admitted to liking a soul record when they normally slag the music off? My 8yr old son, who has had his mind poisoned by his mother, secretly tells me and asks me to play Showdown by Archie Bell. He likes the talking at the begining. My 18yr old daughter when she was younger used to ask me to play a tape in the car with What by Judy Street but she would never admit to liking it at home. What records have your loved ones owned up to liking? KTF. Drew.

Oooooops! Just realised, the post was about niters. Still, 1am is as near a niter as I'm likely to get the Gary Glitter fan I live with to. KTF. Drew.

Not been for a while but I like The Oakfield in Sale South Manchester. Probably holds about 120 and the last time I was there (about 2 yrs ago now) it was getting those sort of numbers regularly. Great music, 3/4 DJ's and a very cheap subsidised bar. Got a soft spot for the Oakfield as it was the first venue I went to when getting back into the scene about 5yrs ago. Must make the effort to get there again. KTF. Drew.

A few that have me knocking people over to get to the floor. In no particular order and a few of many; Make Me Yours Bettye Swann Love Runs Out Willie Hutch I love her so much..... The Majestics Getting Mighty Crowded Betty Everette (thinking of going to the Wheel tonight so should hear this old fav). Unsatisfied Lou Johnson I'll be loving you Soul Brothers Six I can't take it anymore Spyder Turner Crackin' up over you Roy Hamilton. Nothing out of the ordinary there (or controversial ) but some great floor fillers. Love that feeling when you hear the intro to records like these and something just takes over..........."mind ya backs, mad man comin' through"! KTF. Drew.

As my last post seems to have got a few hairs standing up I'll qualify why I asked the question. Not all of us have been right at the centre of the scene for the last 30 yrs + as many of the contribitors to this site have been. Some of us are learning all the time. I am nothing to do with Ian Levine. Since being on the Net has enabled me to talk/read about NS and has increased my opportunities of hearing about things that I might otherwise have not heard about, my question was based solely on trying to understand an aspect of the scene (scene politics if you will) that I have sensed is around. I am aware that posting such a question might have had a reaction but my intention I promise was to gain an understanding of something and not to 'muck rake' as it were. Put it down to me being naive. No sleep lost and as others have apptly said in the past "I'll get me coat on this one". KTF. Drew.

This is a genuine question and not a prompt for someone to be rude and/or offensive about Ian Levine. If the moderators/owners of this site feel that this post is not suitable then please feel free to remove it. I have been following the discussions on this site for some time and have noticed the odd remark levelled at Ian Levine. Always seems to be a bit more behind the remarks than banter or mild critisism! Seems he's to blame for everything from spoiling the chances of decent record hunting in the States to 9/11! What has this guy done? Of course I know who Ian Levine is and some of his history within the scene but I do not know him and he doesn't know that I exist. I ask this as a punter and not someone on the scene ( DJ, collector, or promoter) who would know one way or another why there seems to be this dislike for him. Once again, this is not a prompt to be abussive. I am genuinely interested. KTF. Drew.

Dusty Springfield Soul Diva Or White Artist Rip Off?
Drew3 replied to Drew3's topic in All About the SOUL
There was a clip of that review on the South Bank show that prompted my origional post. KTF. Drew. -
Oh Sh.t! If that's true the Garry Glitter fan that I live with must never know! She'll never be off my case! Keep It to Yourself. Drew.

Dusty Springfield Soul Diva Or White Artist Rip Off?
Drew3 replied to Drew3's topic in All About the SOUL
Just had a listen to Silly Silly Fool and What's It Gonna Be on the SCJB. Both excellent records. I have heard both before but not paid as much attention as I should have. Clearly the majority feel that Ms S is up there with other great soul artists and deserves that place. Who am I to disagee. Drew. -
This may have been done on here before but here goes! Just watched the recent South Bank show from a month or two back about Dusty Springfield and wondered what the view of the regular patrons of this site thought about this very talented singer? Does she deserved to get played and are any venues doing so? 'I just don't know what to do with myself' is brilliant sung by Miss Springfield KTF. Drew.

Have to agree with Denis Barbara Randolph's I Got A Feeling is the ultimate Motown NS record for me. Love it by the Four Tops also. Others are: My Weakness Is You Edwin Starr Can't Stop Looking For My Baby The Fantastic Four. Can never understand how anyone into NS can dismisive of the best of Motown! KTF. Drew

Hi. I have looked at the Channel 4 website for No Angels and I can't find any track listings! Any advice? Thanks. Drew.

Hello ITM. No I'm not the person you are referring to. Bloke last time I looked ! Been into the music since the 70s with the not unusual detour into other things and back on the scene in the last few years. Thanks for the answer re Poo Pan. I'm not a collector or DJ so the label is new to me. Just seen it on an auction site. Quite rare I gather. Once again brilliant post that prompted me to post for the first time myself on what is sometimes quite a daunting, expert laden (not an insult) site for we mere mortals! Will try to join in more now I've made the step. KTF. DREW.

This is the best thing said throughout this whole debate, certainly the only post that meant anything to me. Brilliant. PS Sorry for being dim but what is Poo Pan? Is it a label? KTF. Drew.
