Steve I've kept up with your progress via your Mum & Sister, so I knew & have seen your little girl (A picture when she was 6) & also know you only recently married & also knew about what work you did, hey I even still on ocassions see Ady Clarke & I still can't understand him & yes he still never stops moaning, also I saw Jenny Wade recently she's just back from the Far East, it would be great to catch up, my those friday afternoons after work listening to the newest tunes at ours before setting off round the Country for the weekend, not forgetting those Bank Holidays in Scarborough!!!!!!! Hey Middleman, Spot here alive & well & now married to Gail Wood (29 years) who I was going out with then, been back into this in a big way for about 10 years now, Gaz Wood (Woody) still gets to odd do, some of the other Goolies went off to make their fortunes, Steve Middleton (Middy) is down near the big smoke,Tony Hancock has retired & moved to Cornwall,little Wendy Mellin from Thorne is still about at does. We keep bumping into faces from the past like Steve LeAir, Ted Coulstone,Steve Dimberline,Ronnie Pedley,Lorraine from Richmond, the York crew & more but it's hard to remember names & faces are even harder because we've all changed so much. Lets be knowing who you are then, I've got a strange feeling it could be Steve Middleton but then again I could be totally wrong. Jesus I've just scanned this Topic & realised this is what sickens me about the scene, a general question then it's all hands on deck to have a quick backhanded swipe at anyone who dares to make a living off the back of the scene, we go to Whitby because we love the place & have a great weekend with friends, Brid (IMVHO) is a bit of a dump & I can't remember the last time I went or even thought of going there. We all know that "The Antidote" was put on to try & sink Whitby because of personal dislikes & thats sad because I like both parties & hope they both make a worth while profit out of it. There's one tune that still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up & sends a shiver down my spine, it still beckons me to trip the light fantastic (If only I could) & like a gigantic magnet pulls me to the dancefloor, I remember the first time I'd heard again after some 15 years of being off the scene & that intro that says "THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL,NOW DANCE". What killed WC? Well me thinks not just one thing, There was the Council,who didn't want to offend the locals. The DS,YES the place & every other venue was awash with drug at the time & not full of clean living Hamish virgins as Mr Binstanley would have you believe. Mr Binstanley who never had a true love for the music & it's people, only the glory & their money,proved by the Paul O'Gravy show, bloody hell wasn't he a Heavy Metal Dj before going all Soulful?? Then there was the media & Pye records who tried to commercialise it & cash in on it but only brought with it thousands of Soul tourists & finally Mods etc which made the true Soulies stay away or find alternative venues. For me it was never the same after they let the camera's in & Frigan's Chosen Spew went on TOTP Mind you the scenes even more devisive now, with Oldies Rooms, Rare Rooms,Modern Rooms,Crossover Rooms,Classic Club & Motown Rooms & worst of all R&B rooms, Jesus I even heard that at some venues they're playing Ska & Reggae, I could bloody weep,lets get back to one room & if you don't like the record being played then sit down & don't dance instead of bleating & whining or worse threatening the Dj or saying,"If you don't play some more uptempo soon mate we're f**king off" & that 2 or 3 hours into a nighter & after 3 midtempo tunes & yes I've seen it certain 1 room events. Anyway the Casino's gone & it wasn't quiet as friendly & loving a place as most remember (That's was the drug's,Kool & the Kaftan,love & peace man & all that sh**e) there was an element of nasty robbing toerags, just ask Mick H & Steve Pownell, really it was an open sewer with a great dancefloor & some even greater music,filled with the rebels & dregs of society,most who went on to do well in life,some who are still my friends & a few who didn't make it to here, mores the pity.I don't really give a sh*t what killed WC, it was part of my life (A good part) a long, long time ago, I'm over it!!!!
