  1. Superb, utterly superb. Spot.
  2. Surely the £20 price gave it away or were you all getting ready to rob the poor sod? If it was an original would you have told him? No, shame on you btw was the "BOOT" added after the event on the ad? And yes I'm joking. Spot.
  3. Mind you it could be Taffy (DS) in disguise!!!!
  4. See you had a chaperone to the Oldies night, lol.
  5. Well done Dave for the recanting of a special day for the Soulies there & also Chalky for finding & putting up the You Tube clip. I shed a tear that day as did the majority of people in the diner, a remarkable & very humbling moment in my journey through life. RIP. Mel. Spot.

Mick H took one & posted it for a time but someone made him remove it, something to do with copy right or some rubbish I was told. I also remember Mel when asked, by almost everyone, if he had any copies of SCRB, saying there was one on a jukebox in the diner he use to own before he retired but I don't know if he was joking, how cool would that be to stumble in there & stick a dime in & play it. Spot. p.s. In the Memphis Smoke Diner none of the Motown Stars etc had any idea who Mel was & it was a delight to see their faces & the realization of the iconic status this man held on our scene, at the end even they cheered & applauded.

We spent the day in Mel's company at Soul Trip Chicago 2009, Gail spent time talking to him about growing Tomatoes & Peppers of all things, I followed him when he signed the visitors book at Motown, he wrote "Your music inspired me throughout my life" or words to that effect as far as I can remember but the abiding memory will be his humbleness at the outpouring of emotion from a room full of Uk Soulies in the Memphis Smoke Diner as he rose to sing along with "She'll come running back", grown men were brought to their knees that day. Fabulous memories, RIP Mel. Spot & Gail.
  8. Mike & Ike - Sax on the trax Melvin Carter - Midnight Brew Mike Post - Bubblegum breakthrough Spot.
  9. I remember at Wigan 73/74 that a new tunes would be played 3 or 4 times in a set to break them, never mind a night but there wasn't the number of tunes around then to choose from. Today however a lot of Dj's turn up 10 minutes before their spot, so have no idea what's been played earlier, take a leaf out of Sean Chapman's book, get there at the beginning of the session & note down those played that you might have played. I remember being at a venue & scanning the 30 or so records a Dj's had ready to choose from to play & informing him that all but 3 or so had been played earlier & yes he had arrived 10 minutes prior to his spot. Spot.
  10. There should have been a quote with this but I obviously did something wrong, it was a reply to the question on here about longest c/u and I think I'm pretty close with The Parliaments, perhaps Chalky could tell us or I'll ask Butch next time I see him, Soul Sam uncovered it 3 or 4 years ago at Whitby and I can remember Butch playing it when we started back at Nighter's years ago & it had been covered up for years then. Spot.
  11. What about The Parliaments - My Rainy day, covered as The Masqueraders must be at least 10 years that I know of, could be wrong & no-doubt someone will let me know if so. Spot.
  12. You can have my avatar of me, Lorraine Davies-Smith & here first husband Peter at Cleethorpes in 75, also there's one of my wife Gail with Maureen Walsh at same place plus I've a couple with Lorraine, Ronnie Pedley etc at Ebor Suite in York.Plus Gail's got some Wigan stuff etc. Spot.
  13. You can have my avatar on here of Me, Lorraine Davies-Smith & her first husband Peter, also I've got some more somewhere, give me a nudge & I'll sort out what I can. Spot.
  14. I knew the face but alas not the person, what lovely words as Gilly said. Spot.
  15. Martyn that's cos it so bloody hard to dance to. Spot.
  16. It was spectacularly crap, both the building fabric & some of the music but that's the reason we loved the place so much, like any great thing it had fabulous high's & tremendous low's but they were our high's & low's and the outside world never did or would understand it. I remember the first time we went from the Mecca to Wigan on the way home in 73 & thinking what a dump but I couldn't stop smiling like a giddy kid & shaking as I crept onto the edge of that now infamous dance floor for my first Wigan experience, I'm tingling now just remembering it. Spot.
  17. Not a patch on Dusty's version, this sounds like Hylda Baker, to me that is. Spot.
  18. Table.
  19. Paddywack, the "In Crowd" thing was not about me, I'm not that conceited or egotistical, it referred to those wishing to jump onto the revival bandwagon to be seen at the forefront of the latest hip trend, till they tire of it in a couple of years, just like in the 70's. KTF my ar*e, Spot.

Don't know her name but I'm sure the lass at the back left with the white top on is a regular at Skeggy weekender & stays in the Grand where we stay.
  21. As it's been pointed out it's a double edged sword, for those who's bias is towards the rarer scene it's hardly made a blip but most are back or starting out on the Oldies scene & it brings with it those who genuinely go for the music & those who attend to relive their youth (As we all do to a certain extent) & think they are the Dogs danglers, owning an area of dancefloor & securing it physically if need be, plus the long bar hours feed them fighting juice, I know this happens at "Normal" venues but that's the reason I avoided them in the first place all those years ago, I've also noticed thefts of things on the up (Myself being a victim, as with the facing off with drunk knobheads) & it's becoming a caricature of itself with the fashion, look back at pictures of Wigan, Mecca & Cleethorpes etc, hardly a vest, badge or baggy in site. I think however give it a couple of years till the nostalgia dies & it vanishes from everyday & it will move onto the next by-gone trend. Take care, be safe & remember," I'm in with the In crowd, I go where the In crowd goes", Spot. p.s. Sorry Mike the answer is "NO", there's to many ars**oles I disliked the first time around returning.
