  1. Willie Walker's Deep Soul classic 'Warm To Cool To Cold' (Checker) Blues rather than Soul, but the great Lightnin' Slim's 'Winter Time Blues' (Excello)
  2. Hi-might be best to wait and see if the other guy who responded-or someone else- has it in better nick;if he has'nt,I'd only want a couple of quid(£3 maybe?) to cover postage costs.I'm just happy to help someone out really. If interested let me know your address etc.
  3. Hi-I have one- No.1- if you are interested .It's in fairly good nick with a few signs of wear and age-some creasing and two very small tears at the bottom of the back page ; also I stupidly put ticks(in biro) against all the LP's I had in the list of Northern Soul Albums on the last couple of pages. You may not be interested now, come to think of it! I bought it from Dave Rimmer at one of the first all- nighters I went to- Keele in 1989,or maybe 1990.
  4. The Bobbettes version was cut in 66'; The Valentinos' original(on the Sam Cooke co-owned SAR label) in March 1964 and the Stones hit cover in the Summer of 64'. The Valentinos' is the best version for me,although I like The Bobbettes take on the song(can't compare with the 45's top side 'Happy Go Lucky Me',of course, with that great heavy-for- 66'- bass led intro, but still quite nice) I did hear The Bobbettes ' It's All Over' played out once, at a London 'do' a couple of years back ('Soul On The Square,'can't remember the DJ)
  5. Hi there-I'll have Brenda & The Tabulations -A Love You Can Depend On,if you still have it. Thanks, kind regards,Michael
  6. Although he was'nt a Philadelphian,Frankie Karl & The Chevrons(7th Ave Aviators) classic 'You Should O' Held On' was on 'Philtown',a Philly label. Pete Kevin- bass singer of Philadelphia Doo-Wop group The Cobras (the uptempo falsetto Doo-Wop collectors' fave 'La La' on Swan from 64'.) That's the best I can come up with I'm afraid!
  7. Hello there-I have an Excellent, lovely clean copy (with original Stateside company sleeve)of Jerry Butler's 'Whatever You Want'. if you still want a copy. Let me know if you're interested and your price. Thanks! Kind Regards,Michael
  8. Yet another Doo-Wop and Soul great gone-so very sad to hear- Eugene and The Jive Five ; from early 60's Doo-Wop ballad beauties like My True Story, Never,Never and Beggin' You Please, to Soul classics such as I'm A Happy Man, Bench In The Park and Northern gems like 'Crying Like A Baby', he was a fine singer who made a fine contribution to music,of which his family and friends can be proud
  9. Yes,Toast was a 'sister' label of Major Minor. If you compare the back covers of Major Minor and Toast LP sleeves-and I've just dug out two-the typefaces and layouts of the track listings and credits are identical-not only that, they have the same address at the bottom of the sleeve "Toast Records Ltd 58/59 Gt. Marlborough St.London W.1" "Major Minor Records 58/59 Gt Marlborough St.London W.1
  10. An infamous example-The Contours-Do The See-Saw (Motown unreleased 1963) Tom & Jerrio- Boogaloo (Jerry O/ABC Paramount 1965) It's a mystery how Chicago DJ Jerry Murray got his hands on an unreleased Motown backing track but he was sued by Berry Gordy for his pains and made no money from the record, which was a big hit(issued here in the UK on HMV) I enjoy both of them -a cracking tune!

  12. Michael V

    Ron Dunbar RIP

Very sad to hear -his 'Judy' on D Town (as Ronnie Love) is a really beautiful Doo Wop ballad -a gem I've loved for many years
  13. Not Stevie's biggest fan but I love Contract On Love from 63'-a wonderful, joyous fusion of Doo-Wop and the Four Seasons sound. Also like his version of Ray Charles' May Ann from 62's Tribute To Uncle Ray LP. Nothings Too Good For My Baby is a fine, classic dancer and With A Child's Heart from the Uptight LP is a nice ballad . If I had to pick one though,it would be Contract On Love.
  14. Don-I'll have the Curtis Mayfield's Chicago Soul CD please,if still available. Thanks,Michael
  15. Rob-Photos do exist of Alvin Robinson's 66' UK tour- two of them appear on the back cover of the 1980's Charly compilation LP 'Shine On'.Hopefully someone more computer-savvy than me who has the LP can put them up. Alvin was a fine and often overlooked artist with a fantastic voice-certainly one of New Orleans' forgotten Soul greats.
  16. Solid centres on UK 45's seem to have come in some time in 1966 and for years after solid centres and push-out centres co-existed on the same labels, with the same records.UK Stateside Soul 45's,particularly in 67'/8 are a good example;I have The Vontastics' Lady Love with a push-out centre but have seen solid centre copies.James & Bobby Purify's Let Love Come Between Us seems to only exist as a solid centre. With Doctor Bird, push-out centres are more common,as Modularman has stated above.

Scarcer issue-demos turn up more often of this. Enjoyable, endearing cover of the Evie Sands/Maddy Bell classic £6 Bill Doggett & his combo -Can't Sit Down Pt's 1 & 2 (61'UK Warner Bros.) No centre but in fine, clean condition. 18. Only on 45 in Germany,I believe (German Liberty) but easy to find on LP-it's on the 60's UK Marble Arch LP 'Great Wilson Pickett Hits' ,alongside his early 60's 'Double L' Deep Soul gems like 'It's Too Late' and 'If You Need Me'
  19. 20. Yes,it's strange that Savoy used company sleeves(a classic design, too) for their 78's but not their 45's.I had to smile about Fortune sleeves-they would have been great, but seeing as Jack and Devora Brown seemed reluctant to even buy two mikes for their studio(or so it sounded-many wonderful records though) company sleeves would probably have been the last thing they'd have invested in!
  21. Stevie-I have a copy but it's only VG (plays great, though) I might do as a stop gap until you find a better nick one.As I say,it's plays much better than it looks-only surface marks, nothing that can be felt..Let me know if you're interested.
  22. Very sad to hear-and so tragic that Betty ended up homeless, let alone a murder victim -an horrific and unjust end for a talented lady with an amazing voice who made too few records;'Someday You'll Need My Love'/'Take My Heart' (Rendezvous 1960) is a terrific early Deep Soul/Dancer double- sider and 'Ain't Gonna Do You No Good' (Mojo 1968) another Deep classic.
  23. Deep with a beat? Well,a few beauties just off the top of my head- 'I'll Be Loving You' by The Soul Brothers Six(Atlantic) a masterpiece that's one of THE greats,in my view, with John Ellison's great Deep vocals, lyrics and that killer deep, driving bass line,Betty Lavette's immortal 'Let Me Down Easy'(Calla) another Soul masterwork, Shirley Wahls' 'Why Am I Crying'(King) half of one of the all-time great double siders(coupled with the superb 'That's How Long (I'm Gonna Love You)') and Spencer Wiggins' 'The Breaking Point' which Spencer did a terrific version of at the 100 Club in London last month, backed by an outstanding band.So glad I was there to see it!
  24. Wiggy-I have No.'s 55 and 89,both in really nice condition,if you're interested.Let me know details re.price,postage etc Thanks,Michael
