  1. Such sad news-Lorraine was involved in so many great records we've all listened to,danced to and loved for so many years
  2. Records have been going 'walkabouts' from the BBC Record Library since at least the 70's, as Winsford stated above (and I've heard other stories re. some 50's R n' R rarities) I started collecting seriously in the early 80's and have found a few 45's(and LP's) with the 'BBC Record Library ' stamp on over the years in charity shops, junk shops etc. Found a copy of Jackie Lee - The Duck on Fontana with the BBC Record Library label stamp in a junk shop in Catford,South London in the 80's,for example. Also, London -based collectors may recall that about 10-15 years ago Reckless Records in Soho acquired a fairly large quantity of BBC Record Library 45's which they sold still in the polythene storage bags as Winsford described;bought a few myself. Maybe these were duplicates the BBC were disposing of-perhaps they have official/unofficial clearouts of doubles and duplicates from time to time, which, along with 'borrowing' (shall we say)accounts for their occasional appearance outside the halls of the BBC over the years

  4. Yes,those Verve 45's are underrated, for sure-like Stop And Think It Over and the above. Also, don' t forget the beautiful Doo Wop he cut with The Gainors, like You Must Be An Angel and Please Consider
  5. It's the Pat Powdrill version of Together Forever on Downey .The Viola Wills version does'nt have the male vocal group
  6. Yes- Soul City's 'Who Knows' is the flip of 'Everybody Dance Now' and Barbara Lynn's 'Until Then I'll Suffer' is the flip of ' Take You Love And Run'-two great double-siders for a start
  7. The J.Geils Band's version of 'I Do' ? Can't think of any other covers that there have been of it
  8. Yes, this was the first issue in 1970 -it was reissued in 1975/6 in Sparks' 'Northern Soul' series, along with Gene Latters' Sign On The Dotted Line . Val made a couple of 45's in the mid-60's on Piccadilly inc. quite nice covers of Patti & The Emblems' Mixed Up Shook Up Girl and Ike & Tina's I Can't Believe What You Say and toured with The Kinks at the time

  10. There were some nice ones on the late lamented US 'Relic' label of Lu Pine material- a great LP (not sure if it came out on CD) of Doo-Wops in their 'Golden Groups' series which came out in the 80's, and I've loved it ever since, also a very nice 'The Girl Groups Of Detroit' (Relic CD 7017) which also came out on LP, -also a couple of Falcons compilations on Relic, too. Not on Relic there was an excellent budget CD on Fat Boy from 1995 called 'The Original Sound Of Detroit' inc gems like both sides of Betty Lavette's super 62' debut ,Bobby Wiiliams etc-basically the same as the old late 60's UK Speciality LP with same title-oh, just remembered another good UK budget LP of Lupine stuff on Windmill called 'Roots Of Diana Ross,Wilson Pickett & Eddie Floyd' came out about 1973.
  11. Also Ede Robin-There Must Be A Love Somewhere (Le Cam) reissued in 75' on Crystal in the UK. .Either Moses & Joshua or Sons Of Moses came first(not sure which) I'm fairly sure. Major Bill Smith certainly did love re-using backing tracks, that is for sure!
  12. I think that's the Goldmine CD 'this is Northern Soul' (GSCD 14) where track 2 is The Imaginations-Strange Neighbourhood instead of the listed track 2, Connie Clark -My Sugar Baby, which then follows on track 3,putting the whole track listing out of joint(apart from track 1)which is quite annoying,as you have to remember that if you want to listen to, say,Frank Dell (track 18) you have to actually skip to track 19 and so on
  13. 'A Long Way to Be Happy' was unreleased until 1976 when it appeared on the UK-only Phil Spector International label LP 'Rare Masters Vol 2 ' and,as my friend RobbK says, was issued later on 45' in the US. A great track(Darlene in fine form) that I've long admired-and felt long overdue for plays on the scene;I've never heard it played out. 'Here I Sit' by the Ronettes is another gem on that LP that could find favour on the dance floor.
  14. I'll have The Tams-Shelter if you still have it.Thanks,Michael
  15. The melody of Patti Labelle & The Bluebells 'A Groovy Kind Of Love'(written by Toni Wine & Carole Bayer Sager) is based on Clementi's Sonatina Opus 36 No.5 (Rondo movement) . The Shangri-La's 'Past,Present & Future' is from Beethovens' Moonlight Sonata. There's more but I can't think of them at the moment.. I don't think 'Bok to Bach' references any Bach melody-not one that I'm aware of anyway;I think it's just a play on words( 'Back to Back') like Mike Sammes 'Oh, My Twisted Bach' (Oriole) or Peter Cook(Peter London)'s RGM 45' There And Bach Again' (Pye)
  16. Dear Dave,I'll have The Fantaisions if you still have it. (£3 1st class signed for P&P)Thanks, Kind Regards,Michael
  17. Cash McCall 'When You Wake Up' -"..just a nothing thing" (at 8.00) ? OK, it's not rare, but a really nice, underrated record I always thought
  18. Dolly & The Fashions were a trio from LA-two sisters Dorothea & Loretha Moody and their cousin Shirley Allen. Their debut 45 was as The Queen Tones backing Zeke Strong in 62' .The Dolly & The Fashions 45 on Ivanhoe was their last, the excellent, soulful 'Just Another Fool '(A- side of the above) in 1965 which was a local LA hit; sadly, without major label distribution it did'nt manage to break out. (info from Steve Propes & Galen Garts' 'LA R&B Vocal Groups 1945-65')
  19. A couple of Northern LP's- Postage Free in UK (Overseas email for rates) Dusty Springfield-Where Am I Going (67' UK Philips Original) In really nice, clean Ex condition-sleeve and record £22 One of Dusty's best! Contains not only her great version of Sissie(Cissie) Houston's 'Bring Him Back' but a host of other fine covers inc.Baby Washington's 'I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face', Aretha's Don't Let Me Lose This Dream' and Evie Sands' 'Take Me For A Little While' It also has a wonderful, period- piece 67' Psychedelic cover! Georgie Fame -Seventh Son (69'UK CBS Original) In basically Ex-condition,cover and record-save for storage 'bag rash' marks on Side 1,not affecting play. Orig.CBS inner sleeve. £10 Contains original full length version of Northern/Mod fave 'Somebody Stole my Thunder' on Side 2 (45' was edited) and nice title track
  20. Doris moved to London in 1969 and lived and performed here for a few years. She recorded a live LP of a concert she did at the Rainbow Theatre in North London with her choir & band 'The Gospel Truth' .It was called 'The Rainbow Testament' which came out on Mojo in 1972.I had the LP many years ago but did'nt think that much of it at the time(not a huge fan of 'Live' LP's on the whole) I would'nt mind hearing it again though, to give it another go,but it does'nt seem to turn up that often these days
  21. Sad news indeed(what an age he reached)- as well as Fats, Dave played on/wrote/produced so many great 50's New Orleans R&B sides by the likes of Smiley Lewis,Shirley & Lee ,Bobby Mitchell, The Spiders etc
  22. 'Power Of Love' definitely is on the LP -the 66' UK CBS one, anyway.Maybe it's not on the US Columbia version
  23. It was probably called 'Right Now' to reflect that Mel Torme was doing contemporary hits & bang up to date mid'60's Pop/Soul rather than the Jazz/MOR he usually performed and personally favoured(apart from 'Comin' Home Baby' his one other dip into Pop/R n'B) 'Power Of Love' is a great track on the LP-and 'Better Use Your Head' is a decent version
  24. Bobby Kline wrote The Ocapellos' nice late (1966!) Doo-Wop minor hit 'The Stars' (General/later Checker) but was'nt a member of the group
  25. The bootleg was on 'Auroro'-a plain grey label.Interestingly, around the same time as it's early 70's Northern popularity, ' Do It,To It' was a popular number at Pittsburgh DJ Porky Chedwick's 'Oldies' dances/record hops in the States and is featured on one of his 'Porky's Favourite Oldies' LP's which I have-the only Soul track amongst some great and beautiful obscure Doo-Wop.
