Good luck with that one... You obviously don't understand the level of passion and commitment associated with the original recordings that goes hand in hand with the NS scene. I'm actually much like yourself where I don't particularly care how I hear the music but I also have the absolute and the utmost respect for the folks who make this scene what it is when it comes to how the music is presented and preserved in that original context and so should you quite frankly. If you don't understand that type of dedication and commitment now after collecting records yourself for the 50 years you mentioned, then you possibly never will i'm afraid.

Hehehe...genius. Edit. Boll**ks I've used up all my likes! -
A glorious record. I only have a copy of the tune on a various artists compilation cd though, alas.

There's one copy here on Discogs. https://www.discogs.com/Carl-Carlton-So-What/release/4692094

I've got quite a few still that I watch from time to time, some of them also have just audio recorded on them and no visual media whatsoever. Slightly off topic but not sure how many people realise that a 4 head VHS Hi Fi video recorder can actually record and play back near CD quality audio. I even used a VHS hi-fi deck as my mixdown deck for my own music projects for a while with excellent results. Well over 90db dynamic range and a 20-20K frequency response. The audio head spins against the tape offering a comparable tape/head speed of 80 ips. Most two track mastering reel to reel decks were 15 or 30 ips. Pretty impressive all in all! Sorry to hear about your lost record though Len,hope it turns up soon mate.

There's 3 copies of the 45 listed on Discogs with a price range of between £7 to £45. E-Bay is just full of chancers trying to make a fast buck, basically.

Ahh,thanks Martin I don't think I've heard that before now. 'The Road' is a terrific tune,I first became aware of the track when I bought the double vinyl of the 'Funk Spectrum' compilation that Keb Darge and Josh Davis (DJ Shadow) released in 1999. I've looked on Discogs in the past but have never seen an original copy for sale although 'The Road' is actually the B-side if i remember things correctly.

Never heard this one before plus I was far too young to attend Wigan Casino! Definitely wouldn't call it a Northern Soul tune on first impression,it reminded me more of Billy Taylor covering a Righteous Brothers song. Nice piano arrangement, too.

Hehehe, brilliant. Im laughing and laughing very hard at this comment..it also has nothing to do with the coughing fit I'm presently having from the sliced beef and Carolina reaper chilli sauce I'm nibbling on whatsoever, although i'll admit it's not exactly helping to be honest!

Important Anniversary Today. (Boxing Day)
Soulsides replied to Motownsoulman's topic in All About the SOUL
Well said. Couldn't agree more.I was listening to the Phil Spector Xmas album yesterday for example which in my opinion is the greatest set of Christmas songs ever recorded. And yeah, everyone and their dog knows that Spector is a total POS but it doesn't detract from the quality of the music he produced for me,personally. Same goes for this which is not only a killer track from J.B. but part of Hip Hop history @ 04.21 when Kool Herc extracted the legendary break No words needed for the brilliance of this fella though! -
Just wondering if anyone knows why he let Frank Wilson scrawl all over the label like that? I know it's super rare and highly desirable (to some, I hasten to add before the floodgates open hehe) but if I had the kind of money to buy it I think having someone else's name on it would possibly put me off tbh. I could be wrong here obviously..but is the fact it's actually signed by F.W. himself an added factor in the records overall value ?

I've been a member of Soul Source for just over a year now and the wealth of knowledge here is absolutely second to none,I've learnt so much from the other folks on here in the short amount of time I've been on the site so thanks for contributing to my further education of the music! I've mentioned it previously but this place and the user base here really is worth its weight in sonic gold. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous new year. Thanks to Mike and the Source team for the good work you guys do.

It's the other way around. Nolan Porter is actually married to Frank Zappa's sister, Candy.

The two most precious records that mean the most to you
Soulsides replied to carl baxter's topic in Look At Your Box
A record which means more to me than words can say..the joy and anguish associated with the memories this track brings flooding back to me are truly immense. Dedicated to my younger brother who sadly passed away in 2010. Gil Scott Heron is probably the artist I've listened to the most over the past 30 years ..as a teenage Hip Hop fanatic I was listening to artists like Public Enemy and the more political end of the Hip Hop genre. Then one day out of the blue someone played me 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' and my mind was instantly blown away by this mans music, unbelievable conviction and his beliefs. I could wax on forever about GSH - a true originator, his influence on Hip Hop and beyond cannot possibly be underestimated in any way whatsoever. -
There's always a possibility, although I'm guessing they probably didn't exit the venue on foot afterwards, hehehe..

That's all fine and dandy hehe, but this is a thread about which 3 records you'd choose to start a set with. The 'Soul Source Armchair Philosophers Mega Thread' can be located in another section of the forum..

As has been mentioned previously the ability to read a crowd of people on a dancefloor, judge their reactions and what they want or expect to hear is paramount. Please bear in mind that I'm not a Northern Soul DJ,I just appreciate the music, so I'm coming at this from a background which is immersed in Hip Hop,Funk and Breakbeat culture, where often as much emphasis is placed on the skill set of a DJ as the records they spin..sometimes more so,in fact. That said I'm a firm believer in programming sets if its just playing records, ideally having several options to cover all bases and spend time really working hard on how certain records can be mixed or sequenced together to the best effect. Most importantly you need to know your records inside out, where the breaks or breakdowns are at certain points on the record for example which can be mixed in and out to create cue points for the next record to be dropped etcetera. One of the main issues I take with certain DJ's (or people who like to call themselves one) is often their inability to mix with cohesiveness which is something I just don't understand as theres no point in having boxes of great sounding vinyl if you cant mix them together properly. When I've paid good money to go to an event I expect to see a DJ with a charismatic stage presence, great sounding tunes with well-composed routines, and precise technical control.Sloppy or inadequate mixing I just cant tolerate, personally. I could list loads, but here's an example of 3 tracks out of many that I could easily start a set with providing that the records hadn't been played earlier in the night by another DJ obviously. These are all in similar tempos and also very simple to mix together too!

The title says it all really..

I'm seriously disappointed..are you trying to start a riot here? Why on earth haven't you mentioned that absolutely extraordinary, unifying Frank Wilson record,Steve??
