  1. +1 well said, Chalky. Honestly, hasn't this already been done to death on this forum? The whole OVO subject has become so tedious now and just causes bad feeling amongst members. I mean it's not so long ago that this same subject caused major unrest and ended with a much liked and respected site moderator(Simon, Aka BabyBoy )leaving the forum altogether. The OVO thing really needs giving the boot once and for all (if you'll pardon the pun) in my opinion.

  6. This is a cd that has interesting covers by Soul and Funk artists and is an album id kind of forgotten about until I catalogued it this afternoon. I think it includes a couple of the tracks you mentioned in your post if I recall correctly,Jimmy. There's also a double vinyl version of the lp available. https://www.discogs.com/Various-Strange-Brew-Weird-Wonderful-Covers-From-The-Warner-Atlantic-Vaults/release/3390570

I really like that Speedometer track I posted which is actually the B-side,they have a proper, authentic Funk vibe to their music and the single is pretty slept on in my opinion..there's a few copies going very cheaply on Discogs. https://www.discogs.com/Speedometer-Nuyorica-Fiesta-Hot-Packet/release/1196816

  10. Hehe..i know, the whole thing is mental isn't it?..my elder brother was a big T.Rex fan when we were growing up, he'd play albums like The Slider constantly but I could never really understand what Marc Bolan was on about, although Bolan himself probably didn't know either to be fair.. A bit later on I got massively into Jimi Hendrix (and illicit substances) as a teen and hear things like this, from 'Axis Bold As Love'. Anger, he smiles, Towering in shiny metallic purple armour Queen Jealousy, envy waits behind him Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted, They quietly understand Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready, But wonder why the fight is on. Soul wise, id have to choose The Dells 'Its All Up To You' . It's hard to pick a particular line though to be honest, the whole thing is magnificent from start to finish and was the first record I heard that sparked my passion for Northern Soul music.
  11. Here's one that's probably your kind of thing,Martin. I'm pretty sure that General Lee AKA Robert Q Lee only ever released a few solo records,he was also a member of a group named Lost Weekend. I wouldn't mind a copy of 'We Did It Baby' on vinyl but the cost of an original is too high for me,personally. https://www.discogs.com/General-Lee-And-The-Space-Army-Band-We-Did-It-Baby/release/1525007 I picked up a series of pretty nice compilation CD's on the Counterpoint Records label entitled Jazz Bizniz Vol 1-3 for a couple of quid each which came out a few years ago that have some great tracks on them, including 'We Did It Baby',there's a link to them here if you want to check em' out. https://www.discogs.com/Various-Jazz-Bizniz-3-Independent-Jazz-Soul-And-Outernational-Sounds/release/1469299
  12. Yes,you're correct it isn't.It's the master recording as I've already said, the original source material, not the original vinyl . We're going round in circles here,if you'll excuse the pun!
  13. No, of course not .I was looking at it more from the technical aspect as I stated previously. Sorry for any confusion!
  14. As the great Louis Armstrong once said "Musicians don't retire, they just stop when there's no more music in them". I think he may of had a good point, there. Horace Silver for example in 2004, said this would be his final year of live performing and that he was going to retire and do other things instead of music. I think retiring could have possibly led to Silver's Alzheimer's disease, although that's just my speculation,by the way.Count Basie retired and ended up needing a wheel chair to get around in his last few years, when he came out of retirement in 1982 the Basie orchestra played the New Savoy Ball Room in Harlem. Basie rode out on his motorized wheel chair and slid himself over onto the piano seat. Basie said to the audience retiring was the worst decision he made.I also recall an interview with J.J.Johnson from the early 90s. Johnson said he had officially retired from traveling and performing. The first time he traveled after retiring, his wife and him were waiting for their luggage, after they grabbed their bags, his wife asked what are you waiting for still? He told her, my trombone. It still isn't here yet. She told him, you didn't take your trombone. I can't think of many musicians that retired and didn't pick up their instrument at some point and play. My Grandfather and his brother were both semi pro Jazz musicians who still played into their 70s & 80's. Unfortunately, I suspect the real reason behind the decision to put off retirement is financial for most musicians. They simply can't afford to stop because they didn't earn a lot and couldn't save enough for their later years. They don't have pensions often and many don't have adequate healthcare insurance,if at all. Their rent and other costs are going up at a much higher rate than their pay. Sure, there are cases where it's a "play or die" ethic, but I think for too many musicians it's actually a case of "play or starve".
  15. An obvious choice..
  16. Imported musical horseshit from France.. it's a no from me.
  17. No,I put the them on the turntable...
  18. Yeah, absolutely.I was looking at it more from a technical point of view..apologies, it's just my audio engineering background raising its nerdy head to be honest!
  19. Its the master recording of a composition which is the true OVO in my opinion as everything else is, in reality, just a copy of those masters regardless of the format its then transferred to. .
  20. Hehe- that's a relief.. I actually thought that Brian Sewell and Sister Wendy Beckett had joined the forum for a minute... You win, close the thread!
  21. Lol What happened to the OVO thread? I only went out for some fish and chips..
  22. Well, I did read everything you posted correctly without flashing through. You stated that you wholeheartedly agree with the O.P. of the thread (who also advocates the use of bootlegs) You then went on to state that you don't condone the playing of bootlegs, so errrm, how can you possibly say that you wholeheartedly agree with the views of the O.P. when you quite obviously don't ?? It doesn't make any sense.
  23. You say that you wholeheartedly agree with the O.P. of this thread (who advocates the playing of bootleg recordings) I think you may have just contradicted yourself there,somewhat..
  24. Im sorry but if you understand why did you start a thread questioning that very same dedication and commitment which the Northern Soul scene prides itself on in the first place then? And to reiterate what @Winsford Soul. stated previously, if it's a well organized event the promoters would have spare heads or stylus etcetera so there wouldn't be an issue with records getting damaged. I'll go one step further here and say that every single DJ I know on the Hip Hop scene who's worth their salt and who plays out regularly (and believe me, I know a lot of DJs)wouldn't be seen dead without their own carts or needles safe in the knowledge that spinning their rare or precious records wont be an issue..I also know DJs who will take their own Technics turntables to the venue for extra reassurance when it comes to spinning their vinyl. If you're playing a set down at the local Dog & Duck on a Friday night it's obviously a different matter altogether though, play cd's, reissues or whatever....hell, if it was me who was doing a spot the punters would be lucky if I turned up with a tape machine and a box of cassettes stuffed under my arm as far as I'm concerned.
