You can actually tell the difference by looking at how much space the grooves take up on the record. The instrumental, being at least 30 seconds shorter than the vocal, takes up noticeably less space. In other words, the runout space is larger on the instrumental. So Pete is nearly correct, you do need both versions side by side to tell the difference without playing the record. Having said that, there is also a way of telling the difference between the two by looking at the numbers in the runout grooves.

Are you talking about a black Chess label Mick? If so, what release number? Can you remember who has those two copies?

So, what's your conclusion Robb? Also noticed that the X20X's have two parallel horizontal lines, at least mine do, where the X20's only have the one. Looking closer at the label, the X20X's don't have the same 'quality' of style and manufacture as the X20's either. There's something different that's hard to describe about the X20X's

Sebastian, Have you got a scan of the B-side on Fling? Because I'm wondering who the vocalist is, as Jesse Powell was the Orchestra behind the vocal. And Kingfish Rock was an instrumental.

Having taken a closer look at the labels, I've noticed a subtle difference or two that lead me to believe that the copy with the extra X is in fact an official repress / reissue by Savoy. I could be wrong but I'll need convincing otherwise.

That's EFFING brilliant Sebastian, thanks VERY MUCH. How do you know all this stuff? I've been meaning to ask this for ages but do you have all these records you so neatly post up for us on SS? Or are you more into the researching and cataloging of these records for posterity and self interest? Dennis.

I quite like it myself but the problem is, I've no idea who it is? But, I think it might be either Don Gardner or Charles Bradford. The reason I say that is because it's on Fire but as a mispress, as the labels indicate that it should be; Mary Ann Fisher - Only Yesterday / Wild As You Can Be - Fire 1010 By the way, the flip side to the Mp3 I posted is a pretty good instrumental (not of the vocal I posted).

Thanks RobbK. But how do you guys know all this stuff? Always impresses me and thankful for it. PS - Was there some reason why sometimes styrene was chosen over vinyl? Was it down to cost? And if so, I wonder why all Demos aren't styrene? -

I have two copies of this record, in the runout grooves one has X20 and the other has X20X. Does anybody know what the significance / difference between the two?
