  1. OH well here goes...I'll get my tin hat on ready for the backlash.

    MY PLAYBOX....I PICK EM...I BUY EM...I LOVE EM & I PLAY EM....SIMPLE AS THAT !!!

I'd rather cut my hands off than play a record I dont own.

    Nashee xxxx

You took the words right out of my mouth - Why would anyone want to DJ with records they haven't put time effort n money into collecting....

The whole point of being a DJ is to play their own records and I find it incomprehensible that anyone would consider doing otherwise - what's the point - your records portray your own style.....

No different IMO to playing CD's out n is infact an insult and discredit to women on the scene....

Do you see guy's getting DJ spot's for borrowing mate's record's... This just make's a joke of us women collector's/DJ's...

  2. A favourite LP only track of mine is - Barbara McNair - Steal away tonight - from the "Hear I am" LP

Full of passion and emotion - I love it

Although never issued I understand that an acetate was cut - just wondering if anyone would kindly help with any info as to it's history/whereabouts....

    Thanks

    Karen

  6. Everything....

The music - dancing - the people - records biggrin.gif Labels, Artist's and their history. The fact that no one can ever say the've heard everything ever recorded, which ensure's there's alway's something new to hear.

I really love the fact that the scene offer's such a vast array of things to learn n discover that it's an endless path to walk n I can certainly say I never get bored.

Though it's alway's a good thing to take time out to do other stuff outside the scene, like learning how to fly a Helicopter

  8. What a lovely idea Derek, then and now photo's - although quite sad - great memories though - Bradford Queens Hall  don't think i've got many photos from the old day's - got a fair few negatives but think mostly of us in venues not actually of the venue itself. Think Sue Holmes might have some (Aregon) on here

  9. Hi Karen

I recently featured the other side of the Dolly Gilmore on my blog:

    Cheers

    Hi Colin

Thanks for that - "Don't you know your the yes" is very good - but it's still "sweet sweet baby" that has that extra something for me..

Top funk tune, but of classic thanks to Wrighty, pretty sure it got it's first airing at the "Texas Funk" launch party a few years ago, I've got the live recording of Ian Vs Keb Vs Josh, I'll see if I can fish it out and post it up on here, worth a listen for the drunken nonsense on the mic! It's on his "Sisterfunk 2" compilation if you want a good copy of it on CD.

You should get yourself down to London this weekend for Soul Revolution Karen! You'll hear plenty of stuff like that in the "Deepfunk Room", I'm sure the DJs would be happy to take requests of that sort of quality

Fancied getting myself down to the Soulrevolution Jame's - look's like a good niter - will try to make it this weekend if not will be the next one... (gently reminder about cd) smile.gif

Enjoyed reading replies to thread thanks for info - wondered if anyone got a sound clip of the Right on version "Sweet sweet man" and "Ain't no man like my man" pleaseee biggrin.gif

  10. My latest love record wise is : Dolly Gilmore - Sweet Sweet Baby - DOVE

Is it around the £400 mark ? Wondering how many copie's and which dj's I can pester to play it for me biggrin.gif

Such a suberb recording and the label - well what more can I say......

On John's auction at moment - sadly won't be the one buying it - but if someone want's to buy it for me... :D

  11. I remember the crow from first time round, I read Dave Godin raving about it in B&S and as his word was law, couldn't wait to hear it. Didn't believe it when I heard it -what a dirge! Truly awful. He released it on Right ON and people bought it unsure.gif . I didn't think Levine had anything to do with it, though that might explain why I loathe it...........

Appreciate this is your opinion - was just curious as to why anyone else had anything to do with why you would loathe it!

DID Ian Levine produce this???-I recall that it is on 'Jumping at the Go-Go' (?) So someone else must have thought it worthy, in some way...

In any case, NS/Rare Soul covers a wide range of styles; there are some truly awful records in all of these genres; funny, I keep thinking of R&B, though.....

"Jumping at the go go" are recording's from the RCA label - Fantastic compilation - one of my favourite for as long as I can remember - though I had a thing about RCA black issues when I was 16/17 - and spent my young years collecting the label along with MGM.

The Crow - Your autumn of tomorrow - as mentioned in an earlier post is on Inner Ear and is one of my all time favourite's very happy memories spent dancing to it at Cleethorpes - was fortunate to have had 2 copies of this the last had to go due to reason's beyond my control. Out of my price range at the mo - sadly, couldn't believe it's value when looking for another copy last year -

  12. Trying not to be obvious, but cant think of a better one.

When Rufus Lumley recorded stronger than me.

I'd want to ask him how he could create such a powerful record when all his other stuff (I'm Standing included) is toilet.

Other than that, I'd have liked to have been in the Motown Studios on the night Detroit burned in the riots, or When Marvin and Tammi were recording together, just to see if I could feel the electricity.

Agree - would have been an awesome experience - not many people have that kinda connection or chemistry - to watch them perform together - you sensed there was no-one else in the world but them :D Ok I'm getting all romantic, but hey I'm a woman I'm aloud.

  13. The only thing I miss this time around is the large ...ney huge venues we used to fill

now we're down to village halls welfare halls labour clubs

altho I visit smaller venues now I remember the atmosphere being electric in the big venues

Nearest to it would be Alfreton leisure centre

good atmosphere huge numbers ( for these days)

    Mand

Must admit we have a break now and again when we get a bit bored :D

    Hi Mand,

I believe you can't make it your entire life - it's always part of us - but need to have outside interest's - friends etc to keep it fresh.

  14. Recently had a thread on this - you can find it under- Tunes That Reduce You To Tears..., Soul or Non Soul... - has to be said it was mostly guy's that replied - that can only be a good thing - for us girlies - though not so for the guy's.

    Karen

  15. So many - Marvin Gaye as already mentioned would have probably been one of my top 2 - would loved to have been present when - Little Ann - recorded - What should I do....

Barons Of Soul - recording - You need love - now that's something else... :D

    Karen

  16. or anything by him really. God I made a prat of myself last year at Cleethorpes when I met him...queued up twice for autographs for myself and Karl Rhodes(think he was too embarrassed to do it himself)..I obviously wasn't...there's photographic evidence of me with him and Carl Carlton somewhere on this site..What a plonker, they say you should never meet your heroes rolleyes.gif

Reduced me to tear's when he sang live at Cleethorpe's...having read his life story - like most of us full of ups n downs but there was something about his life - as is about Marvin Gaye that provoke great passion and sensitivity in their recording's - reflecting great emotion..

  17. Very mixed bag right now - so many people with different agenda's - taste's. Nowaday's people's health n circumstance's - sometime's dictate their need's from the scene. As an example some that used to spend most of nite on dance floor now spend more time listening - changing the tempo they like to hear played out.

One thing I don't understand - hear a few mention fed up of oldie's - yet don't frequent the more upfront venue's and never look to see what dj's are on before a night out - then feel the nite they attended hadn't been what they expect. Too many venue's, especially on the same nite, but that's obvious to anyone, say no more....

Imo seem's to be a bigger divide today on music taste's, but that I guess has been inevitable with the amount of year's that the scene has been part of our live's.. whistling.gif

Don't feel the scene is in a relaxed and comfortable state with it's self right now...

    Karen

  18. If I had the chance there would be so many yes.gif

For me it would have to be - Darrow Fletcher aged 15 in 1966 - recording on his Step fathers label - Jacklyn - named after Darrow's sister - recording "What have I got now".

    Word's fail me......

  19. Ah yeah i'd forgotten about that place, must have been just after the Casino closed. I only went once as well. It had a horrible circular dancefloor as i recall. Wasn't the niter in the Bali Hai room, usually where the Jazz-funk was at Brum Locarno (every Mecca place had one) hence the palm trees.

Memories are very hazy from those days. Can't think why... whistling.gif

Glad someone else remembers it, and only went once - not just me then  Was after Wigan closed.
