That'll be Talbot Hotel then - aka my pub. I had the lease between 1994 and '97. Ran soul nights with my old mucka Nick Ward who's just about AWOL these days. After the pub closed we moved to the Conservative Club for a while (huge compromise for me - but it did have an ace dancefloor...). After that we went to the Royal Hotel until middle of1999. Nick fell out with the 3rd partner Adey Stelling. I couldn't be arsed with taking sides and quit. The club folded and Adey started the 99 Soul Club at the Corner.
Have to say I still miss Wardy
I actually did a spot at Jinxys night last Friday. Bloody nightmare. Back to the old funk nights for me as far as Scarborough goes

Top (Soul) Cat eh?
That you Mr Bowman? It's Steve - date of birth gave it away.
Godz
Think I remember who you are now, have good memories from the Talbot, small but very atmospheric - went to the Conservative too when you moved venues - fabulous dance floor, had good nites there too, just didn't seem to have the same feel. Corner cafe only went once or twice. Adey ran the corner cafe with Mick B didn't he? Sounds like Jinxy's ok - I'm glad, last time I saw him was at Melodies and he and Diane had split up.

I've changed my style of shoes, which has in turn changed my style of dance. Not out of choice, sadly those trusty brogues that served me well at many a nighter have passed on.
Agree hate changing dancing shoes, last pair I could dance in the "floaty" style ken
mentioned, can't managed that style at all in new shoes ( known as Lesbian shoes by some )
New shoes = new dance style

Oh no no no ... i'm most definitely a 'Chalkette' Karen ... through and through....
Of course didn't expect anything else really, thought it quite witty under circumstances though Love to laugh at my own jokes - sad I know........
When was the last time Levines Side Kick set fire to anybody on a dancefloor.... i'm still laughing now ... unbelieveably funny
Joan (Chalkette 2)
Only a handful of member's accepted into the "Chalkette's". Membership card on it's way
Take some beating, 1 min dancing - catch sight of flames to my left - bloody hell - Kev's arse on fire Sure we can come up with something for next "Wilton" if Kev's going.
I have a plan already

These all-nighters were held at a club just outside York on the A64 to Leeds. We used to get the last train across from Bradford then share a taxi out to the place. Can't recall the DJs or how long the place ran for, though I seem to think I played some records there once, Youngblood Smith springs to mind.
I go back along way with the York crowd and there's Ronnie Pedley with can in hand. And I'm wearing that damn duffle coat inside the club.
from left to right: Andy aka Yammy from Rotheram; Jackie also from Rotheram in centre. Vaguely remember the 2 black guys but can't recall their names.
At the time Tony Coleby was rated as a big Detroit collector and here's some of his wares. Left to right: Pete Lawson with Lester Tipton, Harry Crosby with Al Williams WDJ, Tony with Frankie Karl WDJ.
derek
Remember these being on but never went for one reason and another, Harry and Ronnie good mates....

what a loss to us all..nige i wish you had written that track listing for the stafford tape you gave me. i am still looking for many of them. we spoke about tunes that defied labels and crossed bounderies. it was`nt all about northern. but whatever we talked about it was SOULFULL.. this said it all about you. cheers mate...
denmac
Didn't know Nige, but met Lindsey recently. My heart felt condolence's go out to Lindsey, family and friends. Very sad to lose a fellow soul sourcer, but Nige was also well thought of on the scene from reading the lovely things people have written on here. To be honest after seeing his photo I recognise him, but didn't actually meet him.
Glad bright colours and music at his funeral, think that is so appropiate for "soulies" as it's the way we all live our lives................

Shuffling=something to do with the seaside(seaside shuffle) maybe?,cleethorpes,blakcpool,etc;whereas Stomping=land lokced dancing venues,Wigan,Torch,Twisted wheel,Clifton hall.............just a theory not bothered,can do both anyhow .
Stomp-on. Ken
Good theory - but "stomped" loads at "Wigan" and "Cleethorpes".
Come on Ken, don't keep us waiting - you've obviously got the answer - the difference between "Shuffle" and " Stomping".
Karen
-
Yeh, do it sat on a chair now hand jive is about all i can manage.
Appreciate some clarification of something that cropped in Karen's reply. "Stomping"
Now we always called "stomping" the fast feet moving, bouncy dance done to records like 'Flaming Emeralds' e.t.c. Yet on reading some of the books attributed to N.Soul, others refer to it as "shuffling" Anyone ??
Funny you should mention this, recently I decided to let my hair down. (so short, ain't got none to let down but you know what I mean) and have a little "Stomping" session. A friend commented later that they hadn't seen me "shuffle" before

Mods Please leave this thread up, it is wrong to close post's without the person it is insulting to have a chance to see it or reply to it.
as i am a intersted in northern soul the records , and its history, and have a good collection of records and have been for a long time. do you have a better resaon to be on here ?
i can tell all of you ,,that its not northern soul, that Ian does not like , but the hypocryts and idiots and the ego tripping prats that have ruined NS.
my top 3 prats are
chalky
The most modest & unassuming person I know. Has a vast array of knowledge and passes that on to others. (not because his my partner either)
croasdale
Brought smiles to lots of faces at cleethorpes and Carl Carlton and Darrow Fletcher.
bicknall
Runs regular soul show every sunday, for the pleasure of others.
Best check the definitions in the dictionary mate
So tell me how can you say they have ruined Northern Soul

Yep definitely changed mine, used to be more side to side, punctuated with drops etc, but no longer do the 'drops' and have found over the years I've become more 'in a circular' style.
Winnie:-)
Dance in a more circular style these day's too Winnie - must be something to do with age as whatever I'm dancing to, I still do the same even to oldies.

Defo got something, had my foot tapping even though it's a slow, deep track. Not called "Falling, falling star" or "I need you" by any chance
Very interesting that different release asigned to the number. Does it sound anything like the other soul star he shares the name with. Have you had it a long time? Wonder how you came across it.......
Jerry Jackson???????
Karen
Waiting to see if I got either title or artist correct............

Gerri Taylor - It's Beautiful
it's a cover up Gash
Excellent record - find it's perfect to sing along to as well - only when I'm on my own though, as I'm tone deaf

Has anyone else found that their style of dancing has changed over the year's. I know mine has for sure, started out in late 70's spinning in full circle skirt's and sliding side to side in Mocassin shoe's and of course stomping had fab time.
Changed again in 80's/90's and although now I sometime's dance in that style, unbeknown to myself - it's changed yet again in the past year or so. Still known to have the occasional stomp (only thing that remained unchanged throughout the years)

Thank's for posting - but dosen't do anything for me

Not an easy one to answer, over the past 30 years generally your progressing and moving forward within your music style, so fav oldies dj way back, is not necessarily gonna be fav dj today especially also depends on venues and area you travel too.
Looking back loved Steve Whittles spots in Mr M's and Richard Serling in main hall. Today I'm spoilt for choice - Butch - Andy D - Chalky - Sam - Bob Hinsley - Paul S -Kitch ..........all do it for me

Welcome to Soul Source Marco,
If as you say you've been away from the scene for many years, your gonna have loads of fun with so many good venues around and an endless supply of "new to your ears" sounds to enjoy dancing and listening to.
Try the websites below for vinyl
www.ad45s.co.uk Andy Dyson's site, can highly recommend, got some great 45's myself from Andy, has some great quality cheaper priced vinyl too
www.raresoulman.co.uk Has a great rarest of the rare section with sound bytes and label scans.
Ebay has a selection of vinyl / cd's.
If you have a Track's record shop in Bristol, it's worth a visit as stock good range of cd's which might interest you.
Don't know how far your prepared to travel, but "Lifeline niter" this Saturday is one of the best in the country, (the best IMO), also there having another weekender in Feb 07, defo one not to be missed. Middleton niter (soul town), is an excellent venue 3 rooms something for everyone think next date is 15th July, also Piercebridge All dayer in Aug. Lot's of soul nites on around the country, recommend you check out the "Events" section to get direction's and date's. Enjoy..........

Dunno the girls.. but do remember making my own full circle skirts - the right way for a soul girl to spin Top tip - the higher your skirt flared out - the better your spin
