COTB with Junior & Mel G

Color One Tear Black is back this Sunday, 8th September, and we have COTB-family Junior returning, and Mel G spinning with us for the first time. Junior first worked at Footprints Records in Finsbury Park before moving at the legendar BPM Records in Kennington, one of London's best soul, funk and jazz deletion and import specialists of the 90s. A long-time champion of the sort of soul music that we love at Color One Tear Black, and with a deep collection, he spins regularly at Carib Soul. Hailing from Romford, Mel G is deep in sweet and modern soul, revival reggae and lovers' rock – music that he's been collecting for over 40 years. A regular on specialist radio, Mel has hosted shows on Colourful Radio, Roots FM, SLR Radio, and currently has a weekly show on Vibes Urban Soul (Monday nights, 10pm to midnight). COTB residents Jim Edwards, David Hill and JM will also be spinning alongside Junior and Mel G on 8th September. Set up in February 2016 by Thierry Cochet, AKA Dr. Kruger (nts radio), Color One Tear Black celebrates group harmony, mellow steppers, sweet and deep soul music, all played on original issue 45s by resident DJs Dr Kruger, Claire Kalvis, Jim Edwards, David Hill, JM and monthly guests. COTB runs on the second Sunday of each month at The Paradise, 19 Kilburn Lane, London. W10 4AE. 2. Having been scuppered by the England squad making the final of the Euros, Color One Tear Black is back on Sunday 11th August with Jay Blades MBE and Calvin 'Doc B’ Brown as our guests. In the last few years, Jay Blades has become a fixture of prime-time UK TV, with his The Repair Shop series, David (Jason) & Jay’s Touring Toolshed, and a string of other shows. What you may not know is that Jay is a huge fan and keen collector of soul and reggae 45s, which is what he’ll be digging into for his COTB debut. Calvin Brown has a long history with soul music, from helping to source Stateside vinyl for early record fairs back in the day, to frequent US buying trips – he has a deep knowledge and serious history. Persuaded to dust-off his record box in 2015 for JM’s Soul Connoisseurs Collective at Brilliant Corners, Doc B has since become a regular fixture at Carib Soul, the Doncaster Sunday Chill Out, as well as Color One Tear Black. COTB residents Claire Kalvis, Jim Edwards, David Hill and JM will also be spinning alongside Jay and Calvin on 11th August. 3. On Sunday 12th May, we welcome local west London musical stalwarts Dave Jarvis and Pierce Smith to spin at Color One Tear Black. Both have a long history collecting music across a range of styles. Dave ran the Beggars Banquet record shop in Kingston for years, is one of the founders of the Faith – the house music events and fanzine – and is behind the Pamela and Moton labels, the latter having issued productions and edits from a rollcall of DJs and producers including Greg Belson. Pierce has deep musical knowledge and a record collection to match, and DJs with Soul Jazz and at select events including Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here festival (with partner Linda Boyle) and the Reference Point nights. It’ll be a treat to hear with they pull for COTB, and it’s bound to be a busy one as is also Dave’s birthday... COTB residents Claire Kalvis, Jim Edwards, David Hill and JM will also be spinning alongside Dave and Pierce on 12th May. 4. On Sunday 14th April we welcome long-time friend and regular guest selector Greg Belson back to Color One Tear Black, and Jake Miller & Jake Taylor for their first session. For over twenty years, Greg Belson has dedicated himself to exploring long-overlooked gospel sounds that lean heavily towards soul, funk, and disco, and is without doubt the global authority. His Divine Chord radio show on LA's dublab has been running for over ten years now and has the distinction of no track ever having been played twice (shows are archived on dublab.com). Greg is also the compiler of the Divine Disco album series, and works with COTB’s David Hill on gospel compilations – their next is Checker Gospel for the Honest Jon’s label, which is due early 2024. It's always an education when Greg's behind the decks, and we look forward to more off-radar sweet and deep gems. Joining Greg will be Jake Miller and Jake the Tailor (check out his Jake’s brand shirts) from London’s Ram Jam crew. Both are fanatical about soul and Jamaican sounds, and it’s our pleasure to welcome them for their COTB debut. 9. On Sunday 8th October, we welcome Wax Poetics' David Holt for his debut session at Color One Tear Black, and joining him will be COTB regular, Mark ‘Daddy Bones’ Allbones. Wax Poetics has been the Black-music bible for vinyl diggers since its launch in 2001. Twenty years in, and the original team had grown weary, so London-based David Holt stepped in with a Kickstarter-funded campaign and took the reins. Since the relaunch under his stewardship, Wax Poetics has seen a return to the enthusiastic, in-depth coverage of music that we love, and each issue goes from strength to strength. We can't wait to hear what David brings to spin at COTB. Daddy Bones has been a regular visitor and selector at COTB for many years and always comes with a top selection. 11. On Sunday 13th August, Color One Tear Black welcomes Chris Peckings for his first guest spot, and COTB extended-family member, Yann Vatiste, back. Chris Peckings musical history goes way back. In the 1950s his father George ran with Coxsone Dodd in West Kingston, Jamaica, years before Coxsone's first recordings at 13 Brentford Road, home of his Studio One label. George moved to London in 1960 and was then single-handily responsible for getting Coxsone-produced 45s into the hands of London’s sound system owners and operators. In 1974 he opened the legendary Peckings record shop at 142 Askew Road, Shepherd's Bush, West London. Now at 81 Askew Road, the shop is still going strong today, and is run by Chris and his brother Duke. Chris, like so many Jamaican music men also has deep love and knowledge of soul music, especially two step and group harmony, the root of rocksteady. We are very much looking forward to his selection. Yann Vatiste is a stalwart of the London soul scene, and the man behind the Soul Devotion and Va Va Voom. In the last few years, Yann’s Epsilon label has consistently issued incredible ‘lost’ soul music, which is either previously unreleased or ultra-rare. It’s always an education when Yann plays.
