Will have to thank Ian Dewhirst for his eloquant reply on this thought,,,pretty conclusive in my head as I suspected really. But it's an open ended question and be interested to hear U.S. collectors stance on the subject.
lol...no worries didn't really take offence...can always be read out of context this forum stuff...... just like txting the mrs to say the tea she cooked was "nice"
and she answered angrily say "well u do better u bar steward"
With best intentions someone will always take offence whatever u write in the written word!
Tim Brown said this quote on Granada TV in '96 and has always stayed with me. To me it's up there with "one small step for mankind" from a soul perspective....and as important as Dave Godin penning the term "Northern Soul"
"The People in England have become the guardian's of lost American soul music"
I'm sure most will agree (but I'd deffo include Scotland in the quote myself!) but just wondered what your thoughts are?
Particularly be interested to hear from members the other side of the pond.
Did the UK soulies stop it being forgotten and reminded Detroit, Chicago et all the heritage they had?
And without the UK soul scene would it totally have been forgotten due to it's lack of commercial success?
Just a thought on a pensive moment.
Interested to hear everyone's slant on this.
On that note...is it an urban myth or do I seem to recollect a story about Frank Wilson (the record not the man! ) and an old photocopier (the type that used to get hot when scanning) warping one of the copies of the 2 that exist?
I assume if it's true it was straightened!
Can someone enlighten me?
Bloody hell I want some sushi soul!
Great to see younger people into the music....Enjoyed the Oz nationals when I went too when there was a good young contingent there, and as much as I hate to admit it, it does make a difference!
Explains why I couldn't spot myself! Never made the Solo Edwin Starr Event...there was a reason which again I've forgotten!
Do remember that T shirt though...I wanted one but didn't qualify as I wasn't there
Going back to Hinckley, this is probably one of the most moving things I remember on the soul scene.
Pretty sure it was a Hinckley Leisure centre (first?) anniversay nighter in about Jan/Feb '84. There must have been about 2000 soulies there and news had just got out about Jackie Wilson dying which I think Chris King told us over the mic, 2 minutes silence were held and you could have heard a pin drop. Still stays with me to this day that respect.
He still happens to be my fav artist of all time his picture hanging over my fireplace.
Respect to the soul scene for that moment!
Absoulutely fantastic night I was 18 at the time...went along with the Shrewsbury crowd...my mate Carl Heaps, Nobby Holland, Chris (Bearsoul) Morgan who all got a lift with Alex McBride if my memory serves me correctly (which it probably doesn't after all these years!)
Was Sal (Gary Crook) there Chris?
I remember buying an iron on Rictic Revue badge which I put on the back of my fav white grandad shirt...thought I was the bees knees wearing that!
Also got the live Lou Ragland - I Travel Alone record of the night somewhere...will dig it out and post up if not done already?
Been busy on adobe photoshop cleaning up some of the pics posted here...bit clearer now so hopefully can spot myself in the crowd!
The crowd pic is great....like trawling through a where's Wally book! This Wally had a Kevin Keagan curly perm and moustache at the time!
Honestly it was the fasion then!!

as well as some good old cardboard sleeves...cheapest on the web as far as I could see and great quality too!
Cheers Mike,
Will put them both up on refosoul although devastated I'm not the first as took me 15 hours to get from VHS to PVR to DVD to PC to divx!! lol
But like you say quality a bit better so hopefully worth the effort!
Hopefully find out when I get this video shrunk!
Doing my best guys and girls and won't be satisfied 'til it's sorted!!
By the way can I post directly in refrosoul (as never tried uploading video) or do I need to post on the tube?
bit concerned about the tube as regards copyright!
If not on refro or youtube I'll post on my own webspace should I need to!
so to our communal knowledge are these vids already on the web somwhere?
Sorted!
Put it on the tube for now but will post on refo asap too,
No rush for Blackburn Whistle Test vid as already on refo but will do as my seems a bit better quality (as per Mike's post)
Love the quote "records can change hands for as much as £130"...god I wish! lol
Loughborough
Better quality Blackburn video!
