  1. Hi All Has anyone ever had problems ordering books from Bob McGrath in Canada? I got his Soul Discography volume 1 as a birthday present earlier this year and it arrived within the said timeframe of 8 weeks surface mail. On October 4th I ordered volumes 2 and 3, paid 272 dollars - which is around 180 quid I think by Paypal. Got a package this morning after 9 weeks (it DOES say approximately 8 weeks so I'm not too bothered about that). Only volume 3 has been sent, no volume 2 and no explanation as to why. I've sent Bob a screencap of my PayPal receipt for BOTH books and hope that if the second one isn't here within a week or so seperately that I can get a refund or the book sent out in time for Christmas by airmail as a goodwill gesture. Gordy
  2. A programme about funk that doesn't mention Arlester "Dyke" Christian should be investigated by Ofcom or something.
  3. Another one I love equally:
  4. Humpback by Eldridge Holmes on Jet Set - New Orleans funk at its best:
  5. If it wasn't for Kent LPs then CDs, I wouldn't know and love most of the soul music I do. Be it Northern oldies or gut wrenching deep southern soul, I take my hat off to Ady and his team at Ace for the great music and the information in the booklets. Well deserved.
  6. A very good film. I can't comment on what they got right or wrong as I wasn't there at the time (don't think they'd have allowed a 6 year old in!) but as an actual film, great slice of British drama. Was the character that got killed with his favourite songs tattooed on his arm based on Pete Lawson?
  7. Pat Kelly's alive and well and recently did a small tour of the US.
  8. Agreed. It's not just soul - it's all genres of music. Singers and musicians are expected to perform until they literally drop. My late Dad loved his job but retired at 60 (he was in the "services") all the same.
  9. Don't know you mate but hope you get your records back and the bastard who nicked them gets a good hiding.
  10. My fave is Swan's Soul Sides on Kent.
  11. Didn't know Steve but may he rest well. Condolences to his family and friends.
  12. Strange that there's not a showing in Barnsley, a big Northern Soul town but there's showings in those NS hotbeds of Ambleside, Inverness and Shrewsbury (with all respect to any soulies that do live in those places).
  13. What's Orlando like for cheapies and other music such as funk, jazz, reggae. Anyone know? Off there next summer, well Kissimee actually but plan to visit Orlando.
  14. Is it warts and all or does it shy away from his brushes with the law and the taxman etc?
  15. Whatever you may think of Ian, he's a massive part of the soul scene and let's face it who ISN'T controversial? I hope he has a speedy recovery.
  16. I think the lads who run the King Bee Club in Sheffield, amongst others, will be surprised to see that the R&B scene has been "killed"............. it's alive and well!
  17. Forget Jamaica and look up Roberto Sanchez of A-Lone productions in Spain on Facebook. Roberto and his musicians have that classic reggae sound down to a tee.
  18. I got Mighty Joe Young - Suffering Soul on Webcor, great R&B that sounds a bit like Ray Charles, from him for a tenner. Seen it often for around 40 to 50 since!
  19. No Bob Andy? Cocoa Tea instead of Garnett Silk? Lots of early JA sides called "reggae"? Met David Katz once, pleasant bloke, but this list is a bit random...
  20. Always strikes me as strange how famous people who have a ton of money always get/demand stuff for free!!!!
  21. Anyone want to buy my late Dad's house? I'm due a share of the proceeds, about 30 grand, and can buy this then
  22. Good point about Moving Away. Apparently "Nanny Goat" was the first reggae record and that was very early 68
  23. Shouldn't this be in SOJ anyway?
  24. The Studio 1 releases are a bit hit and miss too. The Roots and Dub ones are excellent. So are the Ska ones. But the Rocksteady album only has 3 or 4 actual rocksteady tracks on it, rest are early reggae.
  25. I listen to an online German station (from Hamburg I think) called Laut FM Soul Allnighter. 24 hours nonstop northern, R&B, beat ballads, etc, etc.
