Poll: Version Battle - Our Love (Is In The Pocket)
Span replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
Got to be Darrell banks for me. Was one of my first 45s I bought and still play it regularly at home. It's the raw sound for me and as good as JJs version is I still prefer Darrell's version. Neal -
That should have said Conisborough not Gainsborough ( bloody predictive text ) !
-
Ed, you might know Nip larner, & Terry lorriman who used to bring some of my early northern records back from various places including the casino I think in the late 70s as I think they used to frequent Gainsborough youth clubs at the time ? Neal.

Soul with a hole in - Is this the way to go ?
Span replied to Stevegods's topic in All About the SOUL
In death as in life, going round and round and getting nowhere ! ! -
Those were the days at Toll-bar youth club in donny ( 1972 - 1980 ) with the regular fights between the local mods/skinheads against the bikers/greasers all against a backdrop of these tunes : skinhead moon stomp - Symarip spirit in the sky - Norman greenbaum ghost in my house - R Dean Taylor love on a mountain top - Robert knight backfield in motion - Mel & Tim Romeo & Juliet - the reflections like Adam & Eve - the reflections better use your head - little Anthony plus the usual batch of Motown interspersed with slade/T-rex/candi staton etc.................. it didn't matter what was played as only the girls danced ( the lads would have got filled in if they tried back then ) ! I think the DJ only had about 25 records so he rotated them through the night Lol . I took over the decks in 1977 and started to play some northern soul and some classic soul such as edwin starr/Otis Redding/Al green as well as some jazz funk And the lads did practice their dancing by now before going off to the Top Rank and later Rotters in town ! Great times but I didn't know it back then Neal.

Frank Wilson Test Press Stays in Detroit - Jack White & Record Store Day News
Span commented on an article in News Archives
Do we know what price was paid for the test press ? Or was that already posted elsewhere and I missed it ? -
Dave Jowett did an hour at the Parklands in Donny about 6 months ago and I was talking about it for ages afterwards . Some classic oldies, plus a couple that I didn't know but kept the Floor full for his whole set, so much so that I kept dancing even when I wanted ( needed ) to sit down !! Made my night. Neal.

Playlists - Horse and Groom, Doncaster - Chillout February 18th
Span replied to PS-Soul's topic in Event Playlists - Reviews
Depends what you want to pay but there's a premier inn 300 yards away or the danum hotel a similar distance on the high street. The venue is just off the market so anywhere central will negate the need for a taxi. Hope this helps. Neal. -

Yes I love that & my own Esther favourite, " Nobody but you." She has a unique but so soulful voice. Thing is I don't own a copy of the latter otherwise would be on my playlist every week. Neal.

Had a 8 hour car journey to Inverness 2 years ago with my daughter. Son in law and grand daughter's aged 5 & 3 . Put on a northern CD my brother had done for me and after playing it through 6 or 7 times they were requesting their favourites. L. j. Johnson/ Darrell banks/ frank Wilson/Tobi legend My son in law has had to download the tunes onto a CD so they can listen to them in his car even though he hates it ! Keeping the music alive

Jerry cook for me, mainly because I remember dancing to that version before I had heard the JJ one ! Like most of my records I have, they provide fading memories I don't have either version anymore but looking for a cheap Jerry Cook if anyone has one for sale. ? Neal.

Yes Greedy Mick, they were at the back and I think it was near a corner of a junction and they used to get me imports if I ordered them ( I got my Frank Beverley If thats what you wanted on Sassy from there ) we used to drink in the pub not far from the shop ( I think it was the Midland Hotel ) and they used to have some cracking stuff on the jukebox, that is until we had a ruck with some Greasers in there one Saturday night and got banned. maybe that's why the memory isn't great ? used to get stuff from a record shop in a back street in Skegness too when we went there most weekends

Very similar to last post, an older brother and sister who were into soul ( Otis Redding, sam cooke and the like ) I then started to go to my local youth club about 75 where I heard my first northern soul being played amongst other stuff and progressed to the Bentley comrades club where it was all northern for years until the jazz funk scene infiltrated it. Once I started work in 77 on £22 quid a week I did my £5 a week board and spent the rest on 45s in donny and a great record shop in mablethorpe ( can't for the life of me remember the name ) ? I used to DJ at a few youth clubs and only played northern and get my fix at the local nightclubs in donny/Sheffield and Cleethorpes Went to Wigan twice in 1980 and heard stuff I hadn't heard before but unfortunately got married in 82 and had family like so many did but it's never left me and I've just started buying vinyl again and going to a few local northern nights.

The stylistics ( older sister ) & temptations ( older brother ) were played at home throughout the late 60s and 70s and is where my taste in music originated and I then heard Northern and that was that although I still love the Temps/motown. ! My sister went to see the stylistic a couple of times at the Batley variety club circa 1974 and got to talk with them after the show and she still talks about how great they were. Great childhood memories every time the stylistic are mentioned so thanks Pete.

Thanks Ricky, am thinking of selling it but hadn't got a clue of the value and couldn't find any recent sale anywhere. Neal.
