30 years ago i was sixteen, attending nighters and loved philly stuff too, some of us had open ears and minds even then pete. i was happy to stomp away to something like a major lance track and still have a place in my heart for teddy p. motown /philly track, i seem to recall both versions of don't leave me this way being massive circa 76. and this pathetic childish constant reference to anything the post 69 luddites don't approve of as D.I.S.C.O. is fecking boring. just snapped up alxander patten - a lil' lovin sometimes, and arnold blair - trying to get next to you, so i'm still obviously schitzophrenic

micks still about, he's record dealing, new stuff dance soulful house etc. we've actually managed to drag him along to the last two half time orange do's in leicester and the odd leicester city game to boot along with shelvo and pete shirley, which is ironic as there aint too much modern to entertain such high ranking modden luminaries at the orange lol..

on the joe boxer/ sean mcluskey topic, sean ran a cracking night in london mid to late 80s, it was at drummonds bar on the euston road opposite kings cross. the night if i remember was called mr e's or summit like that, john buck put me onto it, i used to go with the missus and then flatmate sean chambers and the rest of the weston court massive lol. eeh happy days. and if memory serves me correctly didn't mr mclusky go on to co found club u.k.

being serious, and just naming vocalists i can't believe nobody has mentioned someone with a great voice, and who has been very prolific to boot, what about ....teddy pendergrass. then..... lou rawls levi stubbs bobby womack marvin in no order female.......... jean terrell betty wright esther philips again in no order and all spur of the moment choices with dozens more not included, ooh i love 'em all

gotta agree with you and bucky, great record, i hate the snobbery shown towards former big sounds on commercial labels, people have selective memories when it comes to what was big in the day. same label and great track, linda and the funky boys- climbing the steps of love, i can play it on the radio, or in clubs with great effect yet i'd be villified and cast out like a leper if i dared mention it on the soul scene. god forbid, a record that makes people dance or tap there toes worth less than a million quid, die you infidel dog well done leicester city b.t..w. for going through to round four of the f.a. cup, i do wish simon whites old friend jeremy handcart was around lol.

shaun ryder of the mondays came to a soul night i did in newquay back in the 80s, i sat chatting to him for a while, he informed me anybody who wa anybody on his estate quote all the top boys were into northern. manny of the stone roses and primal scream also is bang into his northern, i booked him to play newquay but the venue management pulled out, in the interim period during one of the phone conversations manny told me he loves his soul and sometimes when he's dee jaying which is what i was booking him for, he drops the odd sound. and the roses flawed genius ian brown featured a good few northern tracks on his under the influence comipilation album he put out a year or so back. this was a corking album of tracks by other artists that had influenced him , including hip hop reggae and soul stuff.

charley and kev were a couple of years older than me, and were established on the scene as i got into it, both taking me under there respective wings and showing me the the ropes so to speak lol. i i haven't seen charley for about 25 years, he was one of the funniest lads i knew, his late younger sister theresa was a sweetheart too, kev kershaw is back into it all again, i see him at the half time orange do's in leicester. i must find out what charley's upto these days.

the old leicester tiffs/ saracens head/palais crowd circa 74/75ish kev kershaw, charley mulholland, dave dunnet,etc.etc. etc. paul rudzitis for his great dj manner and professionalism and allowing me to d.j. at such a tender age at the sarro's, pete robbo(mars bar) for those mad coaches to the mecca/casino in one night do's, also his eye for fashion, green all in one tank suit and plastic sandals mmm nice. the late tim mane, the 1st person i knew who could and would spend fifty sixty quid on a record which back then was three times what i earnt in a week, bad deal with the tommy sands though tim lol. and mr cool back then paul shelvington aka shelvo, for introducing me to so many good mecca tracks, a better dress sense and a joy de vivre that still exists today. and the late jez partridge for leading me astray and just so many laughs. and not forgetting everybody who hung out in leicester selectadisc at weekends aaah halcion days

it's aready massive across the board isn't j.t. it's getting played all over the shop, and certainly has been played at least one weekender, torquay mini togetherness in october. nige brown played it in the main room, i played it in the modern room and i think john nightingale gave it a spin in the modern room too. i love it at the mo' but i honestly think it's being overplayed already and i fear this time next year i'll be sick of it. that aside i can't remember the last time a contemporary release had such a broad appeal, it really is a latterday monster. -
i guees a stab at any of the prices quoted covers it, because of it's appeal to the funk scene aswell as the northern scene it's price, not necessarily value has rocketed in the last couple of years. regularly touted on lists at £100 plus, but as mentioned, e-bayed at anything from £50 upwards. either way i still love it, brings back fond hazy memories (wipes a tear away) i often give it a spin indoors. i don't think the price varies much between demo and roulette issue. not enough instrumentals of quality played thtese days imo. lee
