  1. Chairmen of the Board toured the UK in the Summer of 1971, in October 1972 and again in September/October 1973. The first tour - the show you probably remember - was criticised in B&S (see attachment from B&S #62). There had been a lengthy article on the group, following their poll win as the "most promising new act", in the previous issue. I saw them perform at Pickett's Lock, Edmonton on 4 October 1973. Great show, but three very different musical personalities, with Harrison Kennedy being more of a rock than a soul performer. It was good to see General (Norman) Johnson sing live for the first time. Incidentally, the former member was Eddie Custis. https://www.thatphillysound.com/copy-of-johnny-caswell
  2. Sincere condolences to his family and those close to him. Here is one of my favourites from 1975.
  3. More typical of the great man, Christmas Without A Tree from his Slippin and Slidin album
  4. This Christmas - Donny Hathaway. And a Merry Black Christmas by the late, great Roy C (but not one of his best) from his Stella Lost Her Groove Again album.
  5. Sublime. Must be the BBC's season for Motown as the label came up on last night's Only Connect (Supremes 4/5 albums in 1965) and University Challenge (tracks on which James Jamerson played bass). Too easy for anyone on here, but the students did well.
  6. Here is a link to "Dr" Otis Williams of the Temptations, speaking on BBC Radio Four's Sunday programme about their 1980 version of Silent Night (36.42 minutes into the programme). https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001fvn8
  7. Might work better with jpg
  8. Here it is
  9. I was wandering, lonely as a cloud, in the Wordsworth memorial garden at Grasmere, when I came across this inscription on one of the paving stones. Is this the "Get Involved" man and his wife?
  10. If you have a spare forty minutes or so, listen again to these four spoken intros/outros: Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes I Miss You. Rapped outro begins at 3.35, stay with it to the very end five or so minutes later. Tyrone Davis I Had It All The Time Lenny Williams Where Did Our Love Go The story continues with Lenny Williams Somebody Else
  11. I bow to Robbk's greater knowledge and superior listening skills! If I can, I'll forward the Mamie Galore track by pm. It was featured on the Doris Duke and Friends LP on UK Manhattan, which famously did not include Doris Duke, nor any of her friends (as far as I am aware).
  12. Could it be a guide backing track for (You Better) Do It Right Now by Mamie P. Galore - Sack 4361/No Right To Cry released in 1967? https://www.discogs.com/release/11373966-Mamie-P-Galore-Do-It-Right-Now-No-Right-To-Cry/image/SW1hZ2U6MzgwMzI3NzQ=
  13. A sad day. The sad loss of a musical genius who wrote, produced and sang so many great songs. My particular favourites are "New Breed Kinda Woman" from the Invictus days and Margie Joseph's powerful interpretation of his "All Cried Out". Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
  14. Great article. It triggered a memory of a short piece in Black Wax Magazine (#4 page 17) from May 1973. It was much harder to join all the dots in those days.
  15. The whole performance by the Gabriels, which lasts about 40 minutes, is now available on BBC I-player. https://www.bbc.co.uk/events/ej34mb/play/avqn6q/p0c8yk3s A great variety of styles, but well worth watching to the end, with Jacob Lusk giving a powerful performance of The Way We Were (best since John Edwards, Willie Hutch and Gladys Knight of course); a medley with "You Were Supposed To Love Me"(?). And here is his American Idol version of You're All I Need To Get By from 2011.
  16. So £500 plus postage for a rare pair? PM to me, please!
  17. And belatedly here is Volume II, which I am playing now.
  18. Thanks Rick. Perhaps the sleeve notes will reveal all when the CD arrives later today. Decisions like this send discographers and completists (like me) crazy! Still it has got us talking about a very good series of CDs.
  19. I have all of these from Soul on the Real Side #1 to #12 and have just ordered #14 from Amazon. Anybody know what happened to #13?
  20. And lest we forget, here is the Temptations album cover that also offended Mr Godin. Overreactions methinks.
  21. Here it is - blues and soul 191 #page 25 (May 1976) - run out groove.
  22. Even when Reet Petite was the UK Christmas number one in 1986, Bobby Womack was reportedly trying to raise money for a headstone for Jackie Wilson's grave, so presumably few royalties from 700,000 vinyl sales either. Glad to say the grave does now have a headstone. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/2261/jackie-wilson
  23. With dread? Long Shot Kick De Bucket by the Pioneers was one of my earliest introductions to Reggae and was about the demise of a racehorse mid-race at Caymanas Park.
  24. BB King - Gambler's Blues (Blues is King) Bobby Bland - If I Weren't A Gambler (Soul of a Man) Marvin Gaye - Life Is A Gamble (Trouble Man) Velvet - Bet If You Ask Around (Perception 543) Sam Dees - Roll Seven (Lovers Do)
