After a couple of months away The Harrogate Soul Lounge returns for 2022. Last Friday of the month - starting 25 February. All types of soul music (not just northern top 500), all played on the original vinyl releases*, with no boots or pressings issued years after. The format is less well known and less dancier numbers pre 10pm and more well known dancers after 10. DJ's are Michael Lowcock, John Postill, and Ian Smith with occasional guests and/ or stand ins. Comfortable Lounge setting with dancefloor and reasonable bar - the Soul Lounge is on Robert Street, off Station Parade in Harrogate Town Centre - opposite Waitrose. It is 5 minutes from Bus and Train stations and on the 36 bus ropute with late buses to Leeds and street parking. * - We define Original Vinyl as first local US release or first national US release within c 12 months, and first British (or other national) release within 12 months. If it isn't this and we play it we will tell you!

Resident DJ's Keith Hudson, Steve Murphy and Ian Smith. In a second change to the guest line up Stuart Arber of Crigg Soul Club has had to drop out. However,. Stuart will be on at Bilton next year. Wakefield's Mike Eastwood is a welcome substitution and we welcome him back to Bilton together with debutant Will Walker of Whitby Soul Club. Look out for our 12th anniversary night on Friday 9 December 2022 when Roman and Lodgie will be the special guests.

Update 24 December 2021 Really sorry folks we regret to announce that this Monday's Ilkley v Rolls Royce Bank Holiday Soul Special has now been cancelled. Just had a phone call from the steward at the club, to tell me that his last two bar staff had tested positive for Covid. He is the last man standing at the Club. He has been in contact with those colleagues and so may yet get it too. Finding relief staff at this late stage is not possible apparently, so we have been left with no alternative but to call it off. Personally, I am gutted, as after the last snow cancellation I was very much looking forward to getting Ilkley Soul Club up and running again with this showpiece event. We will try to re arrange both this and the Phil Dick event in the new year once this latest scare has calmed down. The Rolls Royce Club in Barnoldswick has been hosting soul events on 27 December for the last 24 years. This year however the Rolls Royce Club is unable to host its normal day after Boxing Day event. Therefore, Ilkley Soul Club has got together with the DJ's at Rolls Royce to present a special 'Ilkley v Barnoldswick' Soul Spectacular at the Hollygarth Social Club - home of Ilkley Soul Club. Seven hours of the finest Northern Soul, Motown, & Seventies tunes played on original vinyl by seven DJ's - from Rolls Royce we have Roman, Mike Kemp & Lodgie and from Ilkley Keith Hudson, Ian Smith & Daniel Steel plus Martin Bateson from Otley making his debut. 4.30 - 11.30pm. Wooden dancefloor, good sound system, comfortable lounge setting and reasonable bar prices. PS This is a one off event as Rolls Royce Soul Club will be back home on Monday 27 December 2022 and we understand will return early in 2022 for a Saturday night date too. Update 23 December 2021 - Ilkley Soul Club is scheduled to go ahead as planned on Monday 27 December. However, please bear with us as the situation is 'fluid'. At the time of writing the organisers, guests, and staff at the venue are all clear of Covid. However, none of us have been locked away in the build up to Christmas so it is still possible that one or more of us could go down with the new strain. We hope not and we are very committed to going ahead on Monday. We will continue to test ourselves and keep you updated but we are very optimistic. (If we are in any doubt between now and Monday we would cancel immediately). Ilkley Soul Club returns to The Hollygarth Social Club, Leeds Road, Ilkley, LS29 8LY on Sunday 28 November 2021. This is an original vinyl only event with top quality northern soul, 60's club soul, Motown and some top 70's tunes. The emphasis will be firmly on soul to dance to. Special guest DJ is Phil Dick (Detroit A Go Go and many more). Phil joins residents Keith Hudson, Ian Smith & Danny Steel who have all been adding some top tunes to their collection in the last 20 months. Wooden dance floor, comfortable lounge room, reasonably priced bar and ample fee parking. The nearest stations are Ben Rhydding and Ilkley with half/ hourly trains to Leeds and Bradford after the evenyt finishes at 9.00. The club is on the main Leeds road with adjacent bus stops to Leeds and Skipton too.

We warm up before 10 with semi rare and more laid back sounds before hotting up after 10 with more familiar tunes to fill the dancefloor. Regular spinners, all from Harrogate, are The Mad Professor (Mike Lowcock), The Dark Horse (John Postill) and Smithy, who used to run the predecessor event ‘Soulful!’. From time to time they will be joined by guest DJ’s for specialist theme nights. This is not a standard northern soul top 500 event or a “Motown Disco” night but neither is it just for chin scratchers/ soul boffins. It’s a relaxed evening, in a comfortable venue, with dancing and great tunes for fans of all types of soul music and those who just want a great evening out. Requests are welcome and if we have it in the box we will play it. *Music policy – A vinyl only event with 99% of tunes will be played on the original vinyl releases, which in our book means either: the very first release; the first national release of a USA record within c12 months; or the first UK (or other national) release, again within c12 months of the very first release. This event was originally rescheduled for Friday 9 July 2021 but was cancelled after the Government did not relax the lockdown rules. It will now take place on Friday 30 July 2021. (It was originally supposed to be our June 2021 event!). This is a one off date and from October Bilton will return to its normal second Friday of even months slot. The Harrogate Cheltenham Club was the town's original (pioneereing) soul & RnB club between 1967 and 1969. This is the third annual reunion event recreating the spirit and vibe of the original venue. The venue is Ripley Star Club, the home of the world famous Ripley Live and Ripley Blues, which has hosted many famous acts over the years including Steve Cropper and Georgie Fame. It boasts an excellent hard wooden floor ideal for soul dancers. Ripley is an attractive village on the A61 between Harrogate and Ripon on the 36 bus route, with late bus services to both towns. This is NOT your average northern soul night or MOD event. The music policy will be to play (mostly) US Soul & RnB that was actually heard at the original club and which were predominantly available on contemporary British release (not subsequently discovered rarities). The event is original vinyl only (OVO) which means played on records with contemporary US or British labels. The DJ's for the event are Harrogate Record Collectors Michael Lowcock (the opening Friday night DJ from the original club) and Ian Smith (Harrogate Northern Soul Club). For dancer comfort capacity will be restricted to around 100 so advance booking is advisable. The all day soul spectacular carried over to 2021 after the 2020 August Bank Holiday event was cancelled due to Covid 19. 10 hours of across the board soul music in one room with a top line up of local DJ's with the UK's top soul band Soulutions appearing live. The full band will be appearing fronted by the charismatic vocalist Louise Mehan singing their hits Listen and Thankful along with new material. DJ's sets will vary from modern, to northern floor fillers, Motown, Seventies with a few soul hits and some underplayed numbers too. Something for everyone is guaranteed! It promises to be a great day. UPDATE - Thursday 26 August 2021 - The event is still very much on with most of the tickets sold. There are a few remaining places left on the door at £15.
